| This study aimed to evaluate sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L) silage treated with calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2 - (slacked lime) as the only roughage source in a feedlot ration, regarding animal performance and meat quality. Forty five Canchim steers (22 months old, 345 kg body weight - BW) were assigned, in a complete randomized block design, to three treatments (total mixed rations - TMRs - with 35% roughage): T1- TMR with fresh sugarcane; T2 - TMR with sugarcane silage treated with calcium hydroxide (10 g Ca(OH)2/kg of fresh forage); T3 - TMR with corn silage. | The dairy Nutrients Requirements of Cattle (NRC) was developed using data from purebred Holsteins and it might not accurately predict the performance of crossbred cattle. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of two feeding levels (FLs) and three breed compositions (BCs) on nutrient intake, digestibility, performance, and methane (CH4) emissions of prepubertal dairy heifers. | Background: The impact of extreme changes in weather patterns on the economy and human welfare is one of the biggest challenges our civilization faces. From anthropogenic contributions to climate change, reducing the impact of farming activities is a priority since it is responsible for up to 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. | Em estudos com animais de produção em confinamento são verificadas diferenças individuais em relação ao consumo alimentar, tanto em quantidade como qualidade, entretanto, pouco se sabe da influencia da seleção no desempenho. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar se a seletividade por tamanho de partícula no cocho tem relação com o desempenho de bovinos Nelore Mocho. O experimento foi realizado na área de confinamento de junho a novembro de 2012. | Feed efficiency helps to reduce environmental impacts from livestock production, improving beef cattle profitability. We identified potential biomarkers (hub genes) for feed efficiency, by applying co-expression analysis in Longissimus thoracis RNA-Seq data from 180 Nelore steers. Six co-expression modules were associated with six feed efficiency-related traits (p-value ≤ 0.05). Within these modules, 391 hub genes were enriched for pathways as protein synthesis, muscle growth, and immune response. | Foi realizado confinamento de 18 machos nao-cadastrados de cada um dos grupos geneticos (GG) Blonde d'Aquitane X Nelore (BN), Canchim (CA), Piemontes X Nelore (PN) e Nelore (NE) com idade de 10,4 meses e 230 kg de peso vivo. Foram testados os pesos de abate (TRAT) de 380 (I), 410 (II) e 440 kg (III) para NE e 400, 440 e 480 kg para os outros GG, com dieta a base de 50% de silagem de milho. A media de ganho de peso vivo (GPD) foi de 1,41 kg/dia; o consumo de materia seca (CMS) de 8,2 kg/dia e a conversao alimentar de 6,0 kg CMS/kg GDP, nao havendo diferencas entre TRAT. | A relação da eficiência nutricional com a idade e o peso à puberdade e as características reprodutivas foram estudadas em 35 novilhas F1 Holandês x Gir, em ensaios usando o consumo alimentar residual (CAR) nos períodos pós-desaleitamento (PD) e pós-puberdade (PP). Novilhas PD (P<0,0001) e PP (P<0,001) foram ranqueadas como de alta, intermediária e baixa eficiências e apresentaram CAR de -0,259 -0,014 e 0,346kg/dia e -0,848 -0,096 e 0,842kg/dia, respectivamente. | Feed efficiency and carcass characteristics are late-measured traits. The detection of molecular markers associated with them can help breeding programs to select animals early in life, and to predict breeding values with high accuracy. The objective of this study was to identify polymorphisms in the functional and positional candidate gene NEUROD1 (neurogenic differentiation 1), and investigate their associations with production traits in reference families of Nelore cattle. | Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de leitões produzidos por diferentes genótipos de porcas e de cachaços, em comparação com aqueles produzidos por porcas de genótipo comercial convencional. | O experimento objetivou avaliar o desempenho em confinamento e os rendimentos e características das carcaças de bezerros de quatro grupos genéticos submetidos a duas condições sexuais. Bezerros Nelore (NE) e cruzados Canchim x Nelore (CN), Angus x Nelore (AN) e Simental x Nelore (SN), do rebanho da Embrapa Pecuária Sudeste, castrados ou não, após a desmama, recebendo dieta composta por silagem de milho e concentrados.
