Variation of the ichthyofauna along the Goioerê River: an important tributary of the Piquiri-Paraná basin Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Tos,Claudenice Dei; Gomes,Luiz C.; Rodrigues,Maria A..
The construction of reservoirs is considered an important source of impacts on the fish fauna, severely altering the structure of the assemblage. This paper aimed to describe the structure of the fish assemblage of the Goioerê River, determining its longitudinal distribution and patterns of species dominance. The evaluation of its longitudinal variation in the diversity and abundance of the fish assemblage was conducted in July and October 2004 and January and May 2005. The collections were carried out near the headwaters (Gurucaia), middle stretch (Olaria), just above the falls (Paiquerê) and downstream (Foz). Forty-four species were captured. The Gurucaia fish assemblages differed significantly from Olaria, Paiquerê and Foz. The Olaria assemblages...

Rebuilding fish communities: the ghost of fisheries past and the virtue of patience ArchiMer
Collie, Jeremy; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Bell, Richard.
The ecosystem approach to management requires the status of individual species to be considered in a community context. We conducted a comparative ecosystem analysis of the Georges Bank and North Sea fish communities to determine the extent to which biological diversity is restored when fishing pressure is reduced. First, fishing mortality estimates were combined to quantify the community-level intensity and selectivity of fishing pressure. Second, standardized bottom-trawl survey data were used to investigate the temporal trends in community metrics. Third, a size-based, multispecies model (LeMans) was simulated to test the response of community metrics to both hypothetical and observed changes in fishing pressure in the two communities. These temperate...

The importance of habitat features in low-relief continental shelf environments ArchiMer
Malatesta, Rj; Auster, Pj.
Benthic habitats can be loosely divided into low and high relief based upon gross bottom topography. While fish community studies in high relief environments such as coral reefs have been extensively studied using in situ visual analysis, most studies of low relief environments have utilized trawl-based methodologies. Such studies while valuable, are unable to detect small-scale variations in habitat availability and faunal responses to that variation. This paper presents the availability of other techniques, ranging from visual surveys to sonar and bathymetric analysis, which allow research era to address questions of habitat utilization in low relief environments.

Impacts of green tides on estuarine fish assemblages ArchiMer
Paumier, A.; Tatlian, T.; Reveillac, E.; Le Luherne, Emilie; Ballu, S.; Lepage, M.; Le Pape, Olivier.
All around the world, an increasing proportion of estuarine systems are facing massive proliferations of green macroalgae, called green tides, in response to nutrient enrichment. The consequences of this perturbation for ichthyofauna that use estuarine systems as essential fish habitats remain understudied. To estimate these consequences, we combined outputs of both macroalgae proliferation and fish community surveys conducted for the European Water Framework Directive in thirteen estuaries in northwestern France, a region where green tides are of great concern. The approach revealed the influence of green tides on estuarine fish communities. The response of each community to the green tides differed according to their functional guild composition. Benthic...

Functional gains of including non-commercial epibenthic taxa in coastal beam trawl surveys: A note ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Rouyer, Armelle; Martin, Jocelyne.
The development of ecosystem-based indicators requires the broadening of a view of the community, from fish species to all the species (macrobenthic and fish) correctly captured by a given sampling gear. Many scientific surveys already have such integrated databases. The present note aims to demonstrate that existing databases, herein from dedicated coastal nursery surveys, are actually underexploited. Such databases contain information on non-commercial taxa, which could greatly improve our knowledge on the organisation and functioning of coastal ecosystems. Using two datasets, a "complete" dataset composed of commercial and not-commercial epibenthic trawled species (fish and invertebrate) and a "subset" dataset characterized by commercial and routinely...

Emergence of negative trophic level-size relationships from a size-based, individual-based multispecies fish model ArchiMer
Travers-trolet, Morgane; Coppin, Franck; Cresson, Pierre; Cugier, Philippe; Oliveros-ramos, Ricardo; Verley, Philippe.
Modeling the mechanisms underlying trophic interactions between individuals allows the food web structure to emerge from local interactions, which constitutes a prerequisite for assessing how marine ecosystems respond to various anthropogenic pressures. Using a multispecies spatially explicit individual-based model, the emergence of trophic patterns was explored in the eastern English Channel ecosystem, where pelagic-benthic trophic coupling was recently studied empirically. The OSMOSE model was applied to this ecosystem by explicitly representing the life cycle of 13 fish species and one squid group, forced by pelagic and benthic prey fields that are variable over time and space. A matrix defining possible accessibilities between life stages was added to...

Evolution du peuplement halieutique de la baie de Vilaine au cours des décennies 1980 et 1990 ArchiMer
Desaunay, Yves; Guerault, Daniel.
A beam trawl survey of the Bay of Vilaine was conducted from 1981 to 1997. Changes in the commercial fish community were analyzed by comparing the characteristics at the year and decadal scales. The community structure and nursery function of the Bay were steady during the period. However, specific richness, assiduity and distribution indices demonstrated a reduction in the second decade. The global abundance fell from 105.8 ind.ha-1 to 31.3 ind.ha-1. This trend was less marked for the external more marine stratum, which exhibited the lowest densities. The results are discussed in terms of ecological meaning of such a community, compared with the overall demersal fish community. The reasons of the decrease are questioned regarding nursery habitat, local...

Evaluating the potential impact of fishing on demersal species in the Bay of Biscay using simulations and survey data ArchiMer
Ravard, David; Brind'Amour, Anik; Trenkel, Verena.
Fishing affects fish populations through direct and indirect effects. It can change size structures and/or modify population mean weights. Reference values are thus needed to assess the status of populations in exploited ecosystems. These reference values can either be set by a historical approach, i.e. using information from before the onset of exploitation or overexploitation, or by a simulation approach. Using a model based on life-history parameters, we predicted population mean weights and length structures at equilibrium (in the absence of fishing and for fishing equal to different fishing mortalities) which we compared with contemporary data collected during scientific surveys in the Bay of Biscay. Contemporary mean weights were 88% to 30% smaller...

Impact of vegetation structure dynamics and usage on the nursery function of West Europeen tidal salt-marshes ArchiMer
Parlier, E; Albert, F; Cuzange, P. A.; Don, J; Feunteun, E.
The study of the fish population of the Bay of Aiguillon salt marsh (France) and the Mont Saint-Michel Bay enabled us to demonstrate the existence in this singular system of a structuration in colonizing guilds. Some species colonize the marsh exclusively during their first year or first years (salt marsh colonizing year's youths and juveniles) Other species reside in the marsh, like the gobies Pomatoschistus spp. and spend their entire biological cycle around the marsh (salt marsh colonizing resident species). Another category of species goes about the marsh in an opportunist way, using it as a privileged feeding area during their early stages or when adults (salt marsh colonizing opportunist species). The activities linked to the conservation of the...

Functional differences between fish communities on artificial and natural reefs: a case study along the French Catalan coast ArchiMer
Koeck, Barbara; Tessier, Anne; Brind'Amour, Anik; Pastor, Jeremy; Bijaoui, Benjamin; Dalias, Nicolas; Astruch, Patrick; Saragoni, Gilles; Lenfant, Philippe.
In the context of growing anthropogenic disturbances that deeply alter marine coastal ecosystems, various management tools are used to protect biodiversity, such as fishing gear limitations, fishing quotas, protected areas or the creation of artificial reefs (ARs). In contrast to the other management tools, ARs require a modification of natural habitats. We used underwater visual censuses to investigate the effect of habitat modification on the structure of fish communities by comparing a natural reef (NR) to ARs with different habitat complexity. Different fish assemblage descriptors were used to assess species- and functional- and community-level aspects of the assemblages. ARs were rapidly colonized by adult fishes and presented community compositions...

Do population and community metrics tell the same story about recent changes in Northern Mediterranean fish communities? ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena; Gil De Sola, Luis; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Tserpes, George; Bertrand, Jacques.
This document presents a comparative study of human impacts on the length-structure of fish communities across North-Mediterranean ecosystems. We use survey data to examine trends in length-based metrics and their consistency within and among the two levels of organisation populations and communities, and to suggest interpretations of observed trend combinations. We start from a set of population processes potentially affected by human pressures: fishing will induce mortality especially in target species, whereas the hydrological environment and eutrophication potentially affect recruitment and individual growth. How population changes will be reflected at the community level is expected to depend on community evenness. Based on this expectation, a...

Eastern English Channel fish assemblages: measuring the structuring effect of habitats on distinct sub-communities ArchiMer
Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck.
Multivariate and spatial analyses are used to identify and locate fish, cephalopod, and macrocrustacean species assemblages in the eastern English Channel from 1988 to 2004. Four sub-communities with varying diversity levels were identified in relation to depth, salinity, temperature, seabed shear stress, sediment type, and benthic community nature. From 1997 to 2004, some 25% of overall community structure variance could be related to the available environmental descriptors and 20% to persistent factors such as depth, seabed shear stress, sediment, and macro-invertebrate community type. Although there may be significant interannual shifts in overall community structure and composition, the sub-communities identified persisted over time, reflecting the...

Functional roles of an engineer species for coastal benthic invertebrates and demersal fish ArchiMer
Chaalali, Aurelie; Brind'Amour, Anik; Dubois, Stanislas; Le Bris, Herve.
Through their tissues or activities, engineer species create, modify, or maintain habitats and alter the distribution and abundance of many plants and animals. This study investigates key ecological functions performed by an engineer species that colonizes coastal ecosystems. The gregarious tubiculous amphipod Haploops nirae is used as a biological model. According to previous studies, the habitat engineered by H.nirae (i.e., Haploops habitat) could provide food and natural shelter for several benthic species such as benthic diatoms belonging to the gender Navicula, the micrograzer Geitodoris planata, or the bivalve Polititapes virgineus. Using data from scientific surveys conducted in two bays, this study explored whether (1) the Haploops sandy-mud...

The impact of climate change on the fish community structure of the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Blanchard, Fabian.
Many fish species are at the southern or northern limit of their distribution range tit the Bay of Biscay, where large-scale hydroclimatic changes have occurred in recent decades. We attempt here to identify the impact of these changes on the fish community of the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. Data collected during 14 autumn groundfish surveys in 1973 and from 1987 to 2002 are used. The study area is between latitudes 48 degrees 30'N and 43 degrees 30'N while the depth ranges from 15 to 200 m. Annual abundance indices (number of individuals per km(2)) of 56 fish taxa present on average in at least 5% of the tows are computed. Multivariate analysis is used to detect temporal trends in these species' abundance indices. Assuming that...

Investigating the drivers of fish assemblage trophic structure is a critical question, in order to better understand ecosystem functioning, predict the effects of perturbations and implement integrated management of exploited marine ecosystems. Ecosystemic surveys enabled the determination of the trophic structure of the fish assemblages in three French marine ecosystems, namely the Eastern English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lions, through the simultaneous collection of qualitative (stable isotopes and energy content) and quantitative (biomass) data. In the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lions, pelagic primary production supported at least 80% of the fish biomass production, and explained the dominance of pelagic species, but with...

Community-wide scan identifies fish species associated with coral reef services across the Indo-Pacific ArchiMer

Determining whether many functionally complementary species or only a subset of key species are necessary to maintain ecosystem functioning and services is a critical question in community ecology and biodiversity conservation. Identifying such key species remains challenging, especially in the tropics where many species co-occur and can potentially support the same or different processes. Here, we developed a new community-wide scan CWS) approach, analogous to the genome-wide scan, to identify fish species that significantly contribute, beyond the socio-environmental and species richness effects, to the biomass and coral cover on Indo-Pacific reefs. We found that only a limited set of species (51 out of approx. 400, = approx. 13%), belonging to various...

Testing the ecomorphological hypothesis in a headwater riffles fish assemblage of the rio São Francisco, southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Casatti,Lilian; Castro,Ricardo M. C..
The ecomorphology of 14 fish species resident in a headwater riffles area of the São Francisco river, southeastern Brasil, was analyzed and combined with diet and feeding behavior data, previously obtained by us. The three larger species groups formed in the ecomorphological analysis were found to reflect primarily microhabitat occupation in the following manner: a) nektonic characids with compressed bodies, lateral eyes and lateral pectoral fins, with diurnal and opportunistic feeding habits (Astyanax rivularis, Bryconamericus stramineus, and Bryconamericus sp.); b) nektobenthic characiforms and siluriforms with fusiform bodies and expanded pectoral fins, including sit-and-wait characidiins, predators of aquatic insect larvae (Characidium fasciatum and...

The fish fauna of Brokopondo Reservoir, Suriname, during 40 years of impoundment Neotropical Ichthyology
Mol,Jan H.; Mérona,Bernard de; Ouboter,Paul E.; Sahdew,Shamita.
We investigated long-term changes in the fish fauna of Brokopondo Reservoir, Suriname, the first large reservoir (1560 km²) that was created in tropical rainforest. Before closure of the dam in 1964, the fish fauna of Suriname River had 172 species, high diversity and high evenness. The riverine fauna was dominated by small-sized species, but no single species was dominant in numbers. Large catfishes were dominant in biomass. Species were evenly distributed over riverine habitats: rapids, tributaries and main channel. Four years after closure of the dam, only 62 fish species were collected from Brokopondo Reservoir, but the composition of the fish fauna was still changing. The reservoir fauna in 1978 was very similar to the reservoir fauna in 2005,...

Effects of the proximity from an industrial plant on fish assemblages in the rio Paraíba do Sul, southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pinto,Benjamin Carvalho Teixeira; Peixoto,Magna Galvão; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
This work aims to analyze changes in the fish assemblages along a longitudinal reaches of the rio Paraíba do Sul, one of the most used Brazilian aquatic systems, to assess the river "health" and to identify eventual recovery trends. Standardized monthly samplings were carried out at six sites, from October 1997 to September 1999, using casting, sieves, seine and gill nets. Three zones were searched: upstream (Z I), downstream (Z III) and nearby the source of pollution (Z II). Three univariate distribution methods were used: ABC (abundance-biomass curves), K-dominance curves, and geometric class's distribution. Additionally, cluster analysis was applied to detect eventual patterns. The ABC and K-dominance curves showed Z II with evident indication of stress...
