Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in foals. Although many different organisms have been associated with pneumonia in foals, Rhodococcus equi is considered to be one of the most important problems for horse-breeding farms worldwide. This review article discusses general etiopathology, epidemiology and immunology principles. Specific recommendations are presented for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of R. equi - induced pneumonia. |

A case of immune-mediated polysynovitis secondary to enterocolitis is reported in a foal. Clinical exam showed depression, diarrhea and joint enlargement in all members. Microbiological and cytological examination of the synovial fluid revealed non-septic synovitis. Due to progressive debilitation the foal was euthanized. Multifocal ulcerative colitis, mesenteric Iymphadelútis, pulmonar congestion with focal abscess and enlargement of joint capsules were all observed at necropsy. The present report draws attention to the unusual occurrence of immune-mediated polysynovitis in foal, caused by Rhodococcus equi, secondary to severe enterocolitis and rnesenteric lymphadenitis, probably produced by immunecomplexes deposits present in the joints. |

Circadian rhythmicity of physiological processes in animals has been described for some variables. In order to investigate the daily rhythmicity of blood pressure, seven foals (Equus caballus) were used for 40 days after birth. Measurements of blood pressure were done by means of an oscillometric apparatus (Argus TM-7, Schiller, Barr Switzerland) with the foals in a standing position and the cuff placed around the tail. Blood pressure was recorded twice a day, 1 hour before dawn and 1 hour before dusk for the first 10 days of life, every 2 days from the 11th to the 32nd day, on the 36th and on the 40th day. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine statistically significant differences between the mean values recorded at... |

ABSTRACT: South America has numerous Criollo horse breeding farms; however, information on foal hoof growth is still limited and identifying the ideal periods to apply corrective trimming is a frequent concern for horse owners. In the present study, a morphometric analysis of hoof growth was performed on 46 Criollo foals from birth to weaning (0-8 months). Results showed that hoof growth rate was higher in the first four months followed by a decrease until the eighth month. Average growth rate of the hoof was 0.21cm per month, whereas that of the heel was 0.14cm per month. However, no significant differences were observed between medial and lateral heel length or between limbs. Coronary band perimeter and solar width showed an average increase of 0.97cm... |

Apparent digestibility coefficients and serum parameters were measured to evaluate the effect of supplementing feed concentrates with rice bran oil in horses. Twelve horses (6 males and 6 females) with a mean age of 18 ± 4 months old and mean live weight of 306 ± 22.6 kg were used. Treatments consisted of increasing rice bran oil concentrate levels of 0, 3.5, 7.0, 10.5, 14.0 and 17.5%, considering a daily intake of 2.25% live weight on a dry matter basis. A dietary effect of supplementation on the apparent digestibility of gross energy (y = 64.55 - 0.58x) was observed (P<0.05). No effect on the other nutrients was observed (P>0.05). Supplementation did not affect serum glucose levels (P>0.05), but cholesterol was affected (P<0.01) based... |
