Böhm, Herwart. |
The overall goal of the project, which has been started in spring 2015, is to improve productivity of narrow-leafed sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) and yellow sweet lupin (L. luteus) with regard to kernel yield, yield stability, and seed composition. In addition, the question shall be addressed whether the narrow genetic basis of current breeding materials may be broadened by including genebank accessions as plant genetic resources. Another task is to optimize lupin cultivation systems for non-chemical weed control by optimizing intercropping cultivation and the establishing of a system for testing the weed suppression of new varieties resp. pre-breeding lines. These aims should be achieved in the joint project, carried out at the Julius Kühn... |

To determine if present commercial broccoli cultivars meet the diverse needs of organic management systems, such as adaptation to low N input, mechanical weed management, and no chemical pesticide use, and to propose the selection environments for crop improvement for organic production, we compared horticultural trait performance of 23 broccoli cultivars (G) under two management (M) systems (organic and conventional) in two regions of the United States (Oregon and Maine), including spring and fall trials. In our trials, location and season had the largest effect on broccoli head weight, with Oregon outperforming Maine, and fall trials outperforming spring plantings. M main effects and G × M interactions were often small, but G × M × E (location and... |

Crop competition is a key component of an integrated approach to weed management. Variation in competitive ability and competitive traits have been identified in many other crop species, however little work has been done on oats. Trials were carried out over four years at one organic site with five husked and three naked oat varieties. Mid-season Leaf Area Index (LAI) and tillering ability were identified as weed suppressive traits using path analysis. Differences in weed tolerance were found among varieties. Trade-offs may exist between competitive traits and yield potential which could be optimised by limiting competitive traits later in the season. Selection of competitive traits with high heritability, whilst minimising yield penalties, could... |
