Equine protease inhibitor system as a marker for the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vinocur,Myriam E.; Brass,Karin E.; Caetano,Alexandre R.; Silva,Letícia F.; Silva,Aline C.; Silva,Carlos A.M..
The protease inhibitor system (PI) was investigated to ascertain if it can be used as a marker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in thoroughbred horses. Serum samples were taken from healthy thoroughbreds (n = 13) and those diagnosed as having COPD (n = 24) or inflammatory airway disease (IAD, n = 38) as well as from 3,600 undiagnosed thoroughbred horses. PI allelic and genotypic frequencies were estimated using protein electrophoresis on starch and polyacrylamide gels. The four groups of horses showed high genotypic similarity and none of the observed alleles or genotypes of the equine PI system were found to be associated with COPD.

Spi2 gene polymorphism is not associated with recurrent airway obstruction and inflammatory airway disease in thoroughbred horses Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Aline Correa da; Brass,Karin Erica; Loreto,Elgion da Silva; Vinocur,Myriam Elizabeth; Pozzobon,Ricardo; Azevedo,Marcos da Silva.
The aim was to detect the presence of polymorphisms at exons 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Spi2 gene, and evaluate a possible association between them and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) or inflammatory airway disease (IAD) in thoroughbred horses, through single-strand conformational-polymorphism (SSCP) screening. Although polymorphism was not detected in exons 1, 2 and 3, three alleles and six genotypes were identified in exon 4. The frequencies of allele A (0.6388) and genotype AA (0.3888) were higher in horses affected by RAO, although no association was found between polymorphism and horses with either RAO or IAD.

Genetic characterization of the Spanish Trotter horse breed using microsatellite markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Javier Azor,Pedro; Valera,Mercedes; Gómez,María Dolores; Goyache,Félix; Molina,Antonio.
To assist in selection schemes we carried out the first genetic characterization of the Spanish Trotter horse (Trotador Español). We used 16 microsatellite markers to genotype 40 unrelated Spanish trotters, 25 native Balearic horses (11 Menorquina and 14 Mallorquina horses) and 32 Andalusian horses. The observed heterozygosity for the Spanish Trotters was 0.647 ± 0.037 and the expected heterozygosity was 0.696 ± 0.026 while the average number of alleles per locus was 6.0 ± 0.341, these values being similar to the data published for other horse breeds. We also tried to establish the importance of the Mallorquina and Menorquina breeds in the present Spanish Trotter population. Only 9% of the total genetic variability could be attributed to differences...

Genetic variability in the Skyros pony and its relationship with other Greek and foreign horse breeds Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bömcke,Elisabeth; Gengler,Nicolas; Cothran,E. Gus.
In Greece, seven native horse breeds have been identified so far. Among these, the Skyros pony is outstanding through having a distinct phenotype. In the present study, the aim was to assess genetic diversity in this breed, by using different types of genetic loci and available genealogical information. Its relationships with the other Greek, as well as foreign, domestic breeds were also investigated. Through microsatellite and pedigree analysis it appeared that the Skyros presented a similar level of genetic diversity to the other European breeds. Nevertheless, comparisons between DNA-based and pedigree-based results revealed that a loss of genetic diversity had probably already occurred before the beginning of breed registration. Tests indicated the...

Evaluation of equine cecal motility by ausculation, ultrasonography and electrointestinography after jejunocecostomy OAK
Sasaki, Naoki; Murata, Aya; Lee, Inhyung; Yamada, Haruo.
Objective Horses often suffer reduced intestinal motility after jejunocecostomy. Therefore, accurate evaluation of intestinal motility is important for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intestinal motility in horses after jejunocecostomy using three different methods, i.e. auscultation, ultrasonography and electrointestinography. Animals Six healthy thoroughbreds were used in this study. They were subjected to jejunocecostomy. Procedure Bowel sounds in the right paralumbar fossa were assigned a score of 0–3 for intestinal motility evaluation by auscultation, and the number of cecal contractions during a 3-min period were counted by ultrasonography. Electrointestinography (EIG) was used...

A comparison of fitness between horses with different exercise history AgEcon
Barker, Anna B.E.; Warren-Smith, A.K..
Anecdotal evidence suggests that a horse’s prior fitness level has an effect on the horse’s ability to return to that previous level of fitness. This trial aimed to test this assumption which would benefit horse trainers to create individual fitness programs for horses. Standardised exercise testing was used to compare the progress of two groups of horses during weeks three and seven of a 14-week training program. Group A had undergone a similar training program twelve months previously and Group B had not. Plasma lactate samples and heart rate monitoring were used to assess the levels of fitness of the horses. Analysis of variance showed that there was no significant difference in post-exercise plasma lactate concentration between the groups. The horses...

Santos,Jéssyka Emmanuelly Silva dos; Santiago,Juliano Martins; Lucena,Jorge Eduardo Cavalcante; Santos,Bruna Aparecida dos; Lana,Ângela Maria Quintão; Rezende,Adalgiza Souza Carneiro de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify whether the criterion of exhibition contests adopted for Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador breeds has been successful in recent years, i.e., if the subsequent generations have the morphology recommended by the standard of the breed allied with high-quality marcha, a four-beat ambling gait. The classifications achieved by each horse during national horse shows in morphology and gait contests underwent Spearman's correlation to verify the number of contests with a correlation between the classifications in the two judgments and those with no correlation. Next, the number of contests with or without such correlation underwent a frequency distribution test considering the variables breed, year, age, marcha category, and...
