Selección de peces marinos para cultivos intensivos en el Nororiente de Venezuela OceanDocs
Gómez-Gaspar, A..
The northeast coast of Venezuela is the most important fishing region in the country, the sardines (Sardinella aurita) and other species abound in its waters, the annual catch exceeds 300.000 mt. Several factors account for this fertility: an upwelling of subsurface waters, the influence of great South American rivers (notably the Orinoco river), the coastallagoons, and the presence of numerous islands. In the island of Margarita, the possibilities of cultivating 16 species or marine fishes have been studied, but so far only two species, the spadefish Chaetodipterus faber (Ephippidae) and the permit Trachinotus goodei (Carangjdae) show any potential of intensive production. Both species reach their commercial weight (300 - 400 p;) in less than one year,...

Caracterización morfométrica del camarón de salmuera (Artemia), de Cuba OceanDocs
Tizol Correa, R..
Populations of Artemia from two Cuban salterns [El Real, Camagüey (CM) and Frank País, Guantánamo (CGA)], where evaluated to determine systematic position and possibilities to be used in aquaculture. Size of hydrated and decapsulated cysts, average corion width, nauplii size, as well as morphometric measurements in 100 adult males and females were determined for each population. Results were compared with information from six populations of Artemia, using complete linkage and Euclidean distances. Statistical differences were found between the two studied populations that could be due differences in climate conditions, nevertheless both belong to the superspecies A. franciscana. Nauplii from Cuban populations had small body size, between 401 and 421 μm,...

Assessment of genetic variability in two lots of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) introduced to Cuba OceanDocs
Machado Tamayo, R..
To monitor the genetic variability of L.vannamei shrimp-specie as founder stock and their correspondent first generation (F1), four microsatellite DNA loci species-specific for these animals were used. Data from allelic diversity (size, number and frequency of alleles) and levels of hetrozygozity were obtained as measures of genetic diversity. The protocol used is belonging to the lab, from the Norwegian College of Fishery science (NFH) of the University of Tromsø (Uitø). The results indicated a decrease in some of measures for genetic diversity. The number of allele (Na) ranged from 1-9 and their effectives number of alleles (ne) from 1.1 to 6.72. The mean value observed heterozygosity (Ho) by populations range from 0.29 to 0.63, which were lower than the...
