The northeast coast of Venezuela is the most important fishing region in the country, the sardines (Sardinella aurita) and other species abound in its waters, the annual catch exceeds 300.000 mt. Several factors account for this fertility: an upwelling of subsurface waters, the influence of great South American rivers (notably the Orinoco river), the coastallagoons, and the presence of numerous islands. In the island of Margarita, the possibilities of cultivating 16 species or marine fishes have been studied, but so far only two species, the spadefish Chaetodipterus faber (Ephippidae) and the permit Trachinotus goodei (Carangjdae) show any potential of intensive production. Both species reach their commercial weight (300 - 400 p;) in less than one year,... |

Populations of Artemia from two Cuban salterns [El Real, Camagüey (CM) and Frank País, Guantánamo (CGA)], where evaluated to determine systematic position and possibilities to be used in aquaculture. Size of hydrated and decapsulated cysts, average corion width, nauplii size, as well as morphometric measurements in 100 adult males and females were determined for each population. Results were compared with information from six populations of Artemia, using complete linkage and Euclidean distances. Statistical differences were found between the two studied populations that could be due differences in climate conditions, nevertheless both belong to the superspecies A. franciscana. Nauplii from Cuban populations had small body size, between 401 and 421 μm,... |

Two totally randomized experimental designs were developed under controlled conditions of laboratory during 44 and 32 days, to evaluate the effect of seven diets isocalorics and isolipidics containing 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60% protein levels on growth and survival of bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana). There were used animals had an average initial weight of 0.20 ± 0.05 y 0.56 ± 0.25 g. The fastest growths in weight, the metamorphosis ratio and protein efficiency ratio were reached with diet of 20% of protein witch showed significant differences (p<0.05) with the other ones. The feed conversion ratio varied between 1.75 y 11.44 and the best protein efficiency ratio was reached for the animals that attained the bigger growths. It was recommended to... |

To monitor the genetic variability of L.vannamei shrimp-specie as founder stock and their correspondent first generation (F1), four microsatellite DNA loci species-specific for these animals were used. Data from allelic diversity (size, number and frequency of alleles) and levels of hetrozygozity were obtained as measures of genetic diversity. The protocol used is belonging to the lab, from the Norwegian College of Fishery science (NFH) of the University of Tromsø (Uitø). The results indicated a decrease in some of measures for genetic diversity. The number of allele (Na) ranged from 1-9 and their effectives number of alleles (ne) from 1.1 to 6.72. The mean value observed heterozygosity (Ho) by populations range from 0.29 to 0.63, which were lower than the... |

An experimental culture trial of juveniles of mutton snapper Lutjanus analis was conducted in order to evaluate the growth potential of the species and its adaptability to culture conditions. The juveniles (N = 127) with an initial weight ranging between 125 and 178 g were held at a stocking density of 15.9 fish/m3 in a floating cage and fed on a commercial artificial diet of 45% protein for a period of 1 to 8 days. Results showed an individual daily weight increase of 3.16 g/ day and a specific growth rate of t .06 %/ day. Although, the food conversion ratio obtained with the artificial diet was high and inadequate (TCA = 3.53). During the culture period all fish showed great tolerance to handling stress and to water quality conditions in the cage (O2 =... |

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus acclimated to 27 °C were then held at 19, 23, 27 (control), 31 and 35 °C, and were examined for non-specific cellular and humoral responses after 12–96 h. Total leucocyte count decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 and 23 °C after 48 and 96 h, and when transferred to 35 °C over 12–96 h, respectively. Respiratory burst decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19, 31 and 35 °C over 24–96 h, whereas phagocytic activity and phagocytic index decreased significantly when fish were transferred to low temperatures (19 and 23 °C) and high temperatures (31 and 35 °C) over 12–96 h. Lysozyme activity decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 °C after 12–96 h, but increased... |
