The integration of local knowledge and science represents an opportunity to enhance the understanding of interrelations among climate, hydrology, and socioeconomic systems while providing mutual benefits to scientists and rural communities. Insight from rural Alaskans helped to identify a social-ecological threshold used to model potential driftwood harvest from the Yukon River. Information from residents of Tanana, Alaska, was combined with scientific data to model driftwood harvest rates. Modeling results estimated that between 1980 and 2010, hydrologic factors alone were responsible for a 29% decrease in the annual wood harvest, which approximately balanced a 23% reduction in wood demand because of a decline in number of households. The...

Ecosystem Modeling for Evaluation of Adaptive Management Policies in the Grand Canyon Ecology and Society
Walters, Carl J; University of British Columbia; c.walters@fisheries.ubc.ca; Korman, Josh; Ecometric Research Inc.; jkorman@ecometric.com; Stevens, Lawrence E; Stevens Ecological Consulting; farvana@aol.com; Gold, Barry; The David and Lucile Packard Foundation; bgold@packard.org.
An Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management workshop process was used to assist Grand Canyon scientists and managers in developing conceptual and simulation models for the Colorado ecosystem affected by Glen Canyon Dam. This model examines ecosystem variables and processes at multiple scales in space and time, ranging from feet and hours for benthic algal response to diurnal flow changes, to reaches and decades for sediment storage and dynamics of long-lived native fish species. Its aim is to help screen policy options ranging from changes in hourly variation in flow allowed from Glen Canyon Dam, to major structural changes for restoration of more natural temperature regimes. It appears that we can make fairly accurate predictions about some...

Does wrong procedence assignment lead to underestimates in groundwater biodiversity? Ecología austral
Fernández,Hugo R.
Individuals of certain taxa (e.g., water mites and crustaceans) collected from streams and rivers are often assigned to a surficial benthic origin when the animals clearly display subterranean morphological characteristics. This paper addresses reasons for these errors and proposes ways to minimize such mistakes when sampling.

Analysis of the relationship intensity, duration, frequency of disaggregated daily rainfall in southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil REA
Damé,Rita de C. F.; Teixeira-Gandra,Claudia F. A.; Villela,Francisco A.; Santos,Jacira P. dos; Winkler,Antoniony S..
The intensity, duration, and frequency relationship (IDF) of rainfall occurrence may be done through continuous records of pluviographs or daily pluviometer values . The objective of this study was to estimate the intensity-duration-frequency relationships of precipitation, using the method of daily rainfall disaggregation, at weather stations located to the southern half of the state of Rio Grande do Sul; comparing them with those obtained by rain gauge records, in places considered homogeneous from the meteorological point of view. The IDF equation parameters were estimated from daily rainfall disaggregation data, using the method of nonlinear optimization. To validate the equations confidence indices and efficiency and the "t" Student test, among...

DAILY RAINFALL DISAGGREGATION COEFFICIENTS FOR THE DOCE RIVER BASIN, BRAZIL: REGIONAL APPLICABILITY AND THE RETURN PERIOD INFLUENCE REA
Passos,Jéssica B. de M. C.; Silva,Demetrius D. da; Lima,Rafael P. C..
ABSTRACT Alternative methods to the intensity-duration-frequency equations have been used for intense rainfall study in places with no pluviographic data. A pioneering study, by CETESB (1986), established rainfall disaggregation coefficients for Brazil; however, the use of these coefficients take into account neither the rainfall characteristics of the interest locality nor the return period influence in obtaining the precipitation intensities. This study aimed to determine rainfall disaggregation coefficients for Doce river basin; to verify the validity of the regional coefficients use for the entire basin; and to evaluate the return period influence on these coefficients. Data from 19 gauges located in the basin, with rainfall associated with durations...

POSSIBILITIES FOR ECOHYDROLOGICAL MONITORING IN NATURAL AND MANAGED ECOSYSTEMS IN SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Peters,Jan; Wieme,Vanessa; Boeckx,Pascal; Samson,Roeland; Godoy,Roberto; Oyarzún,Carlos; Verhoest,Niko.
Ecohydrology investigates how hydrological processes affect plant growth and vice versa. As these mutual interactions are important in many ecosystems, ecohydrology has wide applicability. An important aspect of ecohydrological research is the assessment and prediction of the occurrence of plant species or vegetation types in relation to hydrological or hydrogeochemical habitat conditions. Several models have been developed (e.g. DEMNAT, ICHORS, ITORS, ITORS-VL). All of these models are data driven. Consequently a monitoring network has to be installed, possibly in addition to existing databases. These networks are ecosystem specific but the most widely monitored variables are: water table depth, electric conductivity of groundwater, soil moisture content...

Infoteca-e

The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the most remarkable achievements of the SARAL/AltiKa mission in terms of scientific applications. Compared to the...

Le maximum saisonnier de Dynophysis cf acuminata à Antifer (Normandie, France) ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Maggi, Pierre; Proniewski, F.; Truquet, Philippe; Bardouil, Michele.
Since 1987 Antifer oil tanker terminal (Normandy, France) was weIl known, as a preferential area for summer highest blooms of Dinophysis cf acuminata, a toxic dinoflagellate. Three oceanographic cruises were made in August 1989, before, in the course of and after the seasonal max. of this species. Results obtained from these cruises (hydrological parameters and phytoplankton) as weIl as from a daily survey at a reference station in Antifer harbour, corrobora te the prevailing role of coastal up flowing of Seine estuarine waters, pushed to the coast by a dominant S - SW wind, on intensity and duration of Dinophysis bloom. Such observations are in agreement with those of Summer 1987 at reference station.

Detecting hydrological landscapes over the Bay of Biscay continental shelf in spring ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie.
A complex set of hydrodynamical structures co-exist over the Bay of Biscay continental shelf. These structures, which can spread over a limited spatial range (10s of km) and last for periods ranging from days to months, influence the rates and nature of biological production. They need to be accurately described before the mechanisms linking hydrodynamics to production can be unraveled. Such description generally requires not only 3D observations of hydrological fields (temperature, salinity, density), but also a description of how these fields vary with time. This is hardly achievable with current means of field observation but can be mimicked by hydrodynamic model simulations. Using simulations from a 3D hydrodynamic model, we developed a methodology...

Lagune de Salses - Leucate. I - Analyse bibliographique. ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.
Subjected to multiple modifications which are responsible for important disruption in the functionning of the lagoon ecosystem during the last decenies, this lagoon is one of the most important sites for the region economy. The aim of this study is to propose a knowledges synthesis utilizable for a future fitting and management water plan. In fact, many studies realized during the last years are obsolete or uncompleted to explain the present state. Hydrogeololical studies, the most important, are not completed to understand the karst-lagoon relations. The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin, must be considered to explain biogeochemical process and the sewage discharges dispersal in the lagoon. Numerical models, with new physicochemical data, appear to be...

Antajan, Elvire; Lefebvre, Alain; Loots, Christophe; Rocroy, Mélanie; Ruellet, Thierry.
This is the 38th annual surveillance report concerning the nuclear power plant of Gravelines. Its very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached maximum in 1986. Surveys concern monitoring of pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplankton, and zooplankton), fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), and benthic macrofauna (intertidal and subtidal). This survey deals with spatial and temporal approaches (i) study of the direct impact by comparison of the input and output seawater stations, (ii) study of medium and long term evolution of the area by...
