The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is arguably the most ambitious piece of European Union (EU) legislation in the field of water. The directive defines a general framework for integrated river basin management in Europe with a view to achieving “good water status” by 2015. Institutional novelties include, among others, water management at hydrological scales, the involvement of nonstate actors in water planning, and various economic principles, as well as a common strategy to support EU member states during the implementation of the directive. More than 15 years after the adoption of the WFD, and with the passing of an important milestone, 2015, we believe it is time for an interim assessment. This article provides a systematic review...

Population Genetic Aspects of Pollinator Decline Ecology and Society
Packer, Laurence; York University; bugsrus@yorku.ca; Owen, Robin; Mount Royal College and University of Calgary; rowen@mtroyal.ab.ca.
We reviewed the theory of conservation genetics, with special emphasis on the influence of haplodiploidy and other aspects of bee biology upon conservation genetic parameters. We then investigated the possibility that pollinator decline can be addressed in this way, using two meta-analytical approaches on genetic data from the Hymenoptera and the Lepidoptera. First, we compared levels of heterozygosity between the orders. As has been found previously, the haplodiploid Hymenoptera had markedly lower levels of genetic variation than the Lepidoptera. Bees had even lower levels, and bumble bees, in particular, often seemed almost monomorphic genetically. However, the statistically confounding effects of phylogeny render detailed interpretation of such data...

Association of T174M polymorphism of angiotensinogen gene with essential hypertension: a meta-analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Liao,Xiaoyang; Yang,Zhiyi; Peng,Daqing; Dai,Hua; Lei,Yi; Zhao,Qian; Han,Yanbing; Wang,Weiwen.
The association between T174M polymorphism of angiotensinogen gene and essential hypertension risk remains controversial. We herein performed a meta-analysis to achieve a reliable estimation of their relationship. All the studies published up to May 2013 on the association between T174M polymorphism and essential hypertension risk were identified by searching the electronic repositories PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE, Springer, Elsevier Science Direct, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. Data were extracted and pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. Ultimately, nine eligible studies, including 2188 essential hypertension cases and 2459 controls, were enrolled in this meta-analysis. No significant associations were...

ADRB2 polymorphisms predict the risk of myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wang,Dong-Wei; Liu,Min; Wang,Ping; Zhan,Xiang; Liu,Yu-Qing; Zhao,Luo-Sha.
Abstract Recently, the rs1042713 G > A and rs1042714 C > G polymorphisms in the beta-2 adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) gene were shown to be related to atherosclerosis diseases. Therefore, we performed a systemic meta-analysis to determine whether the two functional polymorphisms are related to the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and coronary artery disease (CAD). We identified published studies that are relevant to our topic of interest. Seven case-control studies, with a total of 6,843 subjects, were incorporated into the current meta-analysis. Our analysis showed a higher frequency of rs1042713 G > A variant in patients with MI or CAD compared to healthy controls. A similar result was also obtained with the rs1042714 C > G variant under both...

A meta-analysis of ABCG2 gene polymorphism and non-small cell lung cancer outcomes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fu,Lei; Wang,Rong; Yin,Ling; Shang,Xiaopu; Zhang,Runtong; Zhang,Pengjun.
Abstract We aimed to analyze the correlation between ABCG2 gene polymorphisms of 34 GG/(GA + AA) loci, 421 CC/(AC + AA) loci, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) therapeutic effects via meta-analysis. With key words, the databases PubMed and EMBASE were searched for clinical studies on ABCG2 polymorphism and NSCLC. RR and 95% CIs were used to compute combined effects, followed by heterogeneity testing. Publication bias was examined using the funnel plot method. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis. Ten studies were included. No evidence of heterogeneity exists in these studies. The results indicate that two polymorphic loci of ABCG2 gene (34 G>A, and 421 C>A) had no relationship with the curative effect of chemotherapy for...

Combination of meta-analysis and graph clustering to identify prognostic markers of ESCC Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gao,Hongyun; Wang,Lishan; Cui,Shitao; Wang,Mingsong.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most malignant gastrointestinal cancers and occurs at a high frequency rate in China and other Asian countries. Recently, several molecular markers were identified for predicting ESCC. Notwithstanding, additional prognostic markers, with a clear understanding of their underlying roles, are still required. Through bioinformatics, a graph-clustering method by DPClus was used to detect co-expressed modules. The aim was to identify a set of discriminating genes that could be used for predicting ESCC through graph-clustering and GO-term analysis. The results showed that CXCL12, CYP2C9, TGM3, MAL, S100A9, EMP-1 and SPRR3 were highly associated with ESCC development. In our study, all their predicted roles...

Keystone species: toward an operational concept for marine biodiversity conservation ArchiMer
Valls, Audrey; Coll, Marta; Christensen, Villy.
Various definitions and indices have been proposed in the literature to identify keystone species. In this study, we intended to make the concept of keystone species operational for marine biodiversity conservation. We used an exclusive definition of keystone species, based on the original concept of keystone predator, and derived a new functional index of keystoneness (KS) from an ecosystem-modeling approach. First, several KS indices were formulated, by combining measures of the mixed-trophic impact (MTI) and biomass of species. Then, a meta-analysis was performed, based on 101 published Ecopath food-web models, selected with a scoring method, and representative of the variety of marine ecosystems worldwide. The indices were applied to the models, and...

There is an increasing need to understand community-level or whole-ecosystem responses to multiple stressors since the impacts of multiple stressors on marine systems depend not only on species- level responses, but also on species interactions and ecosystem structure. In this study, we used a multi-model ecosystem simulation approach to explore the combined effects of fishing and primary productivity on different components of the food-web across a suite of ecosystems and a range of model types. Simulations were carried out under different levels of primary productivity and various fishing scenarios (targeting different trophic levels). Previous work exploring the effects of multiple stressors often assumed that the combined effects of stressors are...

Data‐Driven Modeling of the Distribution of Diazotrophs in the Global Ocean ArchiMer
Tang, Weiyi; Cassar, Nicolas.
Diazotrophs play a critical role in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, carbon, and other elements in the global ocean. Despite their well‐recognized role, the diversity, abundance, and distribution of diazotrophs in the world's ocean remain poorly characterized largely due to limited observations. Here we update the database of diazotroph nifH gene abundances and assess how environmental factors may regulate diazotrophs at the global scale. Our meta‐analysis more than doubles the number of observations in the previous database. Using linear and nonlinear regressions, we find that the abundances of Trichodesmium, UCYN‐A, UCYN‐B, and Richelia relate differently to temperature, light, and nutrients. We further apply a random forest algorithm to estimate...

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the...

Anticipating fisher behaviour is necessary for successful fisheries management. Of the different concepts that have been developed to understand individual fisher behaviour, random utility models (RUMs) have attracted considerable attention in the past three decades, and more particularly so since the 2000s. This study aimed at summarizing and analysing the information gathered from RUMs used during the last three decades around the globe. A methodology has been developed to standardize information across different studies and compare RUM results. The studies selected focused on fishing effort allocation. Six types of fisher behaviour drivers were considered: the presence of other vessels in the same fishing area, tradition, expected revenue, species...

Is the cat an important reservoir host for visceral leishmaniasis? A systematic review with meta-analysis J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Asfaram,Shabnam; Fakhar,Mahdi; Teshnizi,Saeed Hosseini.
Abstract In recent years feline leishmanial infections (FLI) have been studied more than ever before in various parts of the world. However, evidence-based knowledge on FLI has remained unavailable. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the status of felines infected by Leishmania spp. worldwide. Data were extracted from 10 available databases over the period of 1982 to 2017. Overall, 78 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were used for data extraction in this systematic review. The overall FLI prevalence by both serological and molecular methods was estimated at 10% (95% CI: 8%-14%). In Italy, both the seroprevalence (24 %) and PCR prevalence (21 %) were found to be higher than in other countries. The most common diagnostic test...

Committee neural network and weighted multiple regression to predict the energetic values of poultry feedstuffs PAB
Mariano,Flávia Cristina Martins Queiroz; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de; Alvarenga,Renata Ribeiro; Rodrigues,Paulo Borges.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the committee neural network (CNN) and weighted multiple linear regression (WMLR) models, in order to estimate the nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) of poultry feedstuffs. The prediction equation was adjusted by using a WMLR model and the meta-analysis principle. The models were compared by considering the correct prediction percentages, based on the classic prediction intervals and on the highest-probability density intervals, and by using a comparison test for proportions. The accuracy of the models was evaluated based on the values of the mean squared error, coefficient of determination, mean absolute deviation, mean absolute percentage error, and bias. Data from metabolic trials...

Willingness to Pay for Traceable Meat Attributes: A Meta-analysis AgEcon
Cicia, Gianni; Colantuoni, Francesca.
Several researches evaluated consumers’ Willingness To Pay (WTP) for each meat traceable attribute, generating a great deal of information in this regard, although specific to the conditions of each study. In light of this, WTP estimates for traceability characteristics differ across the literature, leading sometimes to contrasting interpretations. Seeking a full, meaningful statistical description of the findings of a collection of studies, the meta-analysis allows us to analyze consistency across studies and control for factors thought to drive variations in WTP estimates. The meta-analysis has been conducted using 23 studies that, in aggregate, report 88 valuations for WTP. Our results, aside from releasing unconditional information on the WTP for...

Estimation of a Surface Water Quality Valuation Index for the Appalachian Region AgEcon
Khatri-Chhetri, Arun; Collins, Alan R..
A surface water quality valuation index is developed and used to compare counties across the Appalachian Region. This index was based on a meta-analysis of non-market water quality valuation studies along with an application of benefit transfer. The results reveal that Pennsylvania, Georgia, and New York had the highest percentages of counties with high index values within the Appalachian Region. As this research was part of an inter-disciplinary team assembled by the Appalachian Regional Commission, results of this index can be compared to other indices computed for water resources in the region.

Robust Estimates of Value of a Statistical Life for Developing Economies: An Application to Pollution and Mortality in Santiago AgEcon
Bowland, Brad J.; Beghin, John C..
The value-of-statistical-life (VSL) approach is used by environmental economists to value mortality changes resulting from environmental improvement, such as decreased urban air pollution. Because of scarce data, VSL estimates are not available for developing countries. Using robust regression techniques, we conduct a meta-analysis of VSL studies in industrialized countries to derive a VSL prediction function for developing economies accounting for differences in risk, income, human capital levels, and other demographic characteristics of these economies. We apply our estimated VSL to assess the willingness-to-pay for reduction in mortality linked to air pollution in Santiago, Chile. We find willingness-to-pay estimates in the range of $519,000 to $675,000...

FLOODING RISK AND HOUSING VALUES: AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD AgEcon
Daniel, Vanessa; Florax, Raymond J.G.M.; Rietveld, Piet.
Climate change, the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of rivers, and altered water resource management practice have caused significant changes in the spatial distribution of the risk of flooding. Hedonic pricing studies, predominantly for the US, have assessed the spatial incidence of risk and the associated implicit price of flooding risk. Using these implicit price estimates and their associated standard errors, we perform a meta-analysis and find that houses located in the 100-year floodplain have a –0.3 to –0.8% lower price. The actual occurrence of a flooding event or increased stringency in disclosure rules causes ex ante prices to differ from ex post prices, but these effects are small. The marginal willingness to pay for reduced risk exposure has increased...

Multivariate random-effects meta-analysis AgEcon
White, Ian R..
Multivariate meta-analysis combines estimates of several related parameters over several studies. These parameters can, for example, refer to multiple outcomes or comparisons between more than two groups. A new Stata command, mvmeta, performs maximum likelihood, restricted maximum likelihood, or method-of-moments estimation of random-effects multivariate meta-analysis models. A utility command, mvmeta_make, facilitates the preparation of summary datasets from more detailed data. The commands are illustrated with data from the Fibrinogen Studies Collaboration, a meta-analysis of observational studies; I estimate the shape of the association between a quantitative exposure and disease events by grouping the quantitative exposure into several categories.

Valuing international marine resources: A meta-analysis on the Baltic Sea AgEcon
Ahtiainen, Heini.
The study uses meta-analysis to provide insights into the value of international marine resources, illustrating the issue with the case of the Baltic Sea. Willingness to pay for water quality improvements varies systematically with factors such as a country’s income level, characteristics of the change in water quality, water body type, study year and methodology. The results of the meta analysis are applied to benefit transfer in order to assess the distribution of the benefits of marine protection measures between the Baltic Sea countries and to compare the results with previous research. The net benefits of protecting the Baltic are positive, but they are asymmetrically distributed between the littoral countries.
