Clinical and pathological aspects of multicentric hemangiosarcoma in a Pinscher dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,B.D.C.; Torres,B.B.J.; Rodriguez,A.A.M.; Gamba,C.O.; Cassali,G.D.; Lavalle,G.E.; Martins,G.D.C.; Melo,E.G..
A 3-year-old female Pinscher dog was presented with a history of lameness and pain in hind limbs for one week which acutely progressed to non-ambulatory paraparesis. The dog had been apathetic and anorexic during the six days prior to presentation. The neurological findings were compatible with upper motor neuron signs to the left hind limb due to a spinal cord compressive mass on the twelfth thoracic vertebral body. On the other hand, signs of lower motor neurons to the right hind limb were due to a mass with a pathological fracture in the right proximal femur, compressing the sciatic nerve. A histopathological analysis of all organs revealedthe proliferation of endothelial cells showingin filtrative growth and organization into vascular structures with a...

Chronic renal failure in equine due to ascending pyelonephritis predisposed by cauda equina syndrome: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonteque,J.H.; Granella,M.C.S.; Souza,A.F.; Mendes,R.P.; Schade,J.; Borelli,V.; Costa,A.; Costa,P.G..
ABSTRACT This report describes the case of a mare, of the Campeiro breed, used as an embryo donor, which had recurrent cystitis and urinary incontinence crisis. Clinical signs evolved to progressive weight loss, anorexia, apathy, and isolation from the group. Physical examination showed tail hypotonia, perineal hypalgesia, rectal and bladder sagging compatible with signs related to cauda equina syndrome. Complementary laboratory and sonographic assessment, and necropsy confirmed the diagnosis of chronic renal failure (CRF), which was attributed to the ascending pyelonephritis. The examination of urine culture showed growth of bacteria of the genus Streptococcus sp. This is a rare case in the equine species where the lower motor neuron dysfunction led the...

An improved experimental model for peripheral neuropathy in rats BJMBR
Dias,Q.M.; Rossaneis,A.C.; Fais,R.S.; Prado,W.A..
A modification of the Bennett and Xie chronic constriction injury model of peripheral painful neuropathy was developed in rats. Under tribromoethanol anesthesia, a single ligature with 100% cotton glace thread was placed around the right sciatic nerve proximal to its trifurcation. The change in the hind paw reflex threshold after mechanical stimulation observed with this modified model was compared to the change in threshold observed in rats subjected to the Bennett and Xie or the Kim and Chung spinal ligation models. The mechanical threshold was measured with an automated electronic von Frey apparatus 0, 2, 7, and 14 days after surgery, and this threshold was compared to that measured in sham rats. All injury models produced significant hyperalgesia in...

Modifications of the sympathetic skin response in workers chronically exposed to lead BJMBR
Nora,D.B.; Gomes,I.; Said,G.; Carvalho,F.M.; Melo,A..
The long-term effects of low-level lead intoxication are not known. The sympathetic skin response (SSR) was evaluated in a group of 60 former workers of a primary lead smelter, located in Santo Amaro, BA, Brazil. The individuals participating in the study were submitted to a clinical-epidemiological evaluation including questions related to potential risk factors for intoxication, complaints related to peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement, neurological clinical examination, and also to electromyography and nerve conduction studies and SSR evaluation. The sample consisted of 57 men and 3 women aged 34 to 69 years (mean ± SD: 46.8 ± 6.9). The neurophysiologic evaluation showed the presence of lumbosacral radiculopathy in one of the individuals (1.7%),...

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathies: A Morphometric Overview International Journal of Morphology
Fazan,Valéria Paula Sassoli; Vasconcelos,Carlos Augusto Carvalho de; Valença,Marcelo Moraes; Nessler,Randy; Moore,Kenneth Charles.
Diabetes is now considered one of the main threats to human health in the 21st century and many researchers are dedicated to investigate the physiopathology of the disease, with further insights on the managements of its major complications. Since understanding the pathophysiology of the major complications of diabetes and their underlying processes is mandatory, experimental models of the disease may be useful as they allow the recognition of the early mechanisms involved in the long-term complications of diabetes. Peripheral nerve involvement is highly frequent in diabetes mellitus and it has been documented that one third of diabetic patients have peripheral neuropathy. The true prevalence is not known and reports vary from 10% to 90% in diabetic...
