A new species, Hexamermis paranaense n. sp. (Nematoda, Mermithidae), a parasite of larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm, 1826 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by amphids small, amphidial opening pocket-shaped, the anterior portion of the vagina muscularized and slightly protruding with a descending branch forming a loop before joining the uterus, and three rows of genital papillae: the ventrolateral divided in two rows with eight papillae in the outer row and with six papillae in the inner one; the ventral row with four pairs and one single preanal papillae, and with two pairs, a triplete, one pair, a single and one pair postanal papillae. |

Cephalobium bidentatum sp. nov., parasitizing nymphs of Gryllodes laplatae Sauss (Orthoptera, Gryllidae) from Argentina, is described and illustrated. It is distinguished from other members of the genus Cephalobium COBB, 1920, by having the buccal cavity very sclerotized with two hook-shaped teeth, vagina short and muscular, male has two spicules with hook-shaped tips, and by the distribution pattern of the postanal papillae: one pair under the anus, three pairs between the anus and the tail, and two pairs at the base of the tail appendage. |

The copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is an obligate ectoparasite of salmonids. Salmon lice are major pests in salmon aquaculture and due to its economic impact Lepeoph- theirus salmonis is one of the most well studied species of marine parasite. However, there is limited understanding of how increased concentration of pCO2 associated with ocean acidification will impact host-parasite relationships. We investigated the effects of increased pCO2 on growth and metabolic rates in the planktonic stages, rearing L. salmonis from eggs to 12 days post hatch copepodids under three treatment levels: Control (416 matm), Mid (747 matm), and High (942 matm). The pCO2 treatment had a significant effect on oxygen consumption rate with the High treatment animals exhibiting... |

By altering the phenotypic properties of their hosts, endolithic parasites can modulate the engineering processes of marine ecosystem engineers. Here, we assessed the biogeographical patterns of species assemblages, prevalence and impact of endolithic parasitism in two mussel species that act as important ecosystem engineers in the southern African intertidal habitat, Perna perna and Mytilus galloprovincialis. We conducted large-scale surveys across three biogeographic regions along the South African coast: the subtropical east coast, dominated by the indigenous mussel, P. perna, the warm temperate south coast, where this species coexists with the invasive Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis, and the cool temperate west coast dominated by M.... |

Bonamiosis is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis and caused by the protozoa parasite Bonamia ostreae, which is affiliated to the haplosporidia order and the cercozoa phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, circulating cells playing an important role in the oyster's defence mechanisms. Even though the parasite's cycle has not been completely understood yet, direct infection from infected oysters to healthy oysters is possible. This leads us to think that there is no intermediary host in the cycle. Very little data on the parasite's infection mechanisms or the host's defence mechanisms is available. In order to better comprehend the Bonamia ostreae / host interaction, some flat oyster's haemocytes have been put in... |
