The mite Varroa destructor (Anderson & Truemann 2000) (Acari: Varroidae) is one of the most studied parasites of Apis mellifera, as it causes many losses in apicultural business worldwide. Several research studies have demonstrated distinct levels of virulence of the mite and increased colony mortality rates due to its infestation; however only a few studies report the mite's effects on specific tissues, glands or other organs in bees. In this context, this study was conducted with the aim of studying the parasitic effect of the mite V. destructor on hypopharyngeal glands of Africanized A. mellifera. Mean gland cell areas for bees with and without mite infestations were significantly different. Variations in the number of vesicles and the presence of... |

Biological characteristics of the egg parasitoids Trichogramma acacioi, T. atopovirilia, and T. bennetti were studied to select the one with better performance on the control of the Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. Parasitism rate, viability, and sex ratio were studied. Parasitism rate ranged from 1.67 to 41.33%. T. atopovirilia and T. acacioi were respectively the most and less aggressive species. The viability ranged from 6.20% for T. acacioi to 53.34% for T. atopovirilia. There were no differences on sex ratio (p<0.05) that remained above 0,88. T. atopovirilia was the species with best performance in the laboratory when rearing on the Diamondback moth eggs. |

Arnoglossus laterna is only infested by intestinal parasites. Each parasite distribution is independent of the distribution of other parasites and also independent of the sex of host. When a fish is infested by a great number of the two helminths Acanthocephaloides and Bothriocephalus clavibothrium , the proportion of lymphocytes tends to decrease and the proportion of neutrophils tends to increase (inflammatory response). Important infestation by Scolex pleuronectis induces an increase of the thrombocyte count for 100 counted leucocytes. After infestation by the nematode Thynnascaris sp. alone or with another parasite, even by small number, the proportion of lymphocytes decreases and the proportion of neutrophils increases. |

Little attention has been paid to flatfish parasitism as a potential factor of variation in year-class strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parasitic infection and nutritional condition of young-of-year (YOY) common sole. Sole were collected monthly from May (early settlement) to November 2004 in a mussel pole culture area, using a push-net or a trawl, and dissected for parasite identification and counts. Total lipids were extracted from the whole body and lipid classes quantified. Triacylglycerols to sterols (free form) ratio (TAG/ST) was used as an index of nutritional status. Digenean metacercariae infection, characterized by two dominant genera, displayed clear seasonal dynamics and the highest records yet reported... |

In 1983, the parasitism of Mytilus edulis L. by Proctoeces maculatus (Loose, 1901) Odhner, 1911 (Trematoda, Digenea, Fellodistomatidae), was recorded for the first time by the authors from mussels farming on stakes (Western Cotentin). After analysing the distribution of the prevalence on the shore and bibliographical data, it was suggested that this parasite must follow a biological cycle that had never been observed on the French coasts and that the most probable host of eggs producer - adult or progenetic metacercaria - would not be a fish but the Prosobranch Gasteropod Nucella lapillus . This was confirmed in 1987. This discovery enabled the authors to support a campaign of eradication of this mussels predatory mollusc. In 1990, the parasitism has... |

We sampled 0-group sole juveniles (N = 174) in September and October 2003 in 9 major nurseries located along the French Atlantic coast (English Channel and Bay of Biscay). 0-group sole were infected with 3 genera of digenean metacercariae, Timoniella spp. (Acanthostomidae), Prosorhynchus crucibulum and Prosorhynchus sp. A (Bucephalidae), Podocotyle sp. (Opecoelidae), and an unidentified species of Digenea. Parasite infection levels in the English Channel nurseries were lower, and the community composition was different from Bay of Biscay nurseries. We hypothesize that the difference between geographic areas was due to differences in first intermediate host communities and, to a lesser extent, because of lower temperatures in the English Channel compared to... |

We quantified the effect of trematode parasites in cockles through a 303 d transplant experiment. Cockles were sampled in 3 different sites on the southwest coast of France characterized by 3 different trematode communities, i.e. Royan (RO): high Meiogymnophallus minutus abundance near cockle heart, South Arguin (SA): high Himasthla interrupta abundance in the mantle margin, and North Arguin (NA): almost free of trematodes. Sampled cockles were individually tagged and placed in different cages at Banc d'Arguin, Arcachon Bay. At the end of the experiment, RO cockles had lost their trematodes, highlighting the fact that trematode lifespan can be short, while SA cockles maintained their trematode load. When cockles were the second intermediate host, there was... |

Many deep‐water fish populations, being k‐selected species, have little resilience to overexploitation and may be at serious risk of depletion as a consequence. Sea warming represents an additional threat. In this study, the condition, or health, of several populations of common ling (Molva molva), blue ling (M. dypterygia) and Mediterranean or Spanish ling (M. macrophthalma) inhabiting different areas in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean was evaluated, in order to shed light on the challenges these deep water species are facing in the context of fishing activity and a warming climate. The data on the condition of Molva populations which we analyze here has been complemented with data on abundance and, for the southernmost species (Mediterranean... |
