Characterization of water availability in a hydrographic basin REA
Arai,Fabiane K.; Pereira,Silvio B.; Gonçalves,Geula G. G..
The quantitative knowledge of hydrological parameters (rainfall and flow) and their spatial and temporal variability on the regions or basins should be understood as essential to the efficient planning and management of water resources. Because the Ivinhema Basin, located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, represents an important inductor on the region agricultural development, characterized as a major producer of grains and meat, it was used to characterize the hydrological study. Knowing the rainfall, flow and drainage area of each of the studied affluent, it was calculated the proportion of contribution of the affluent. To that end, it was proposed the concepts of potential and real contributions, aiming to identify the proportion of...

Estimation of climatological water deficit in an experimental watershed in the brazilian cerrado REA
GOTARDO,JACKELINE T.; RODRIGUES,LINEU N.; GOMES,BENEDITO M..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to estimate the probability of climatological water deficit in an experimental watershed in the Cerrado biome, located in the central plateau of Brazil. For that, it was used a time series of 31 years (1982–2012). The probable climatological water deficit was calculated by the difference between rainfall and probable reference evapotranspiration, on a decennial scale. The reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was estimated by the standard FAO-56 Penman-Monteith method. To estimate water deficit, it was used gamma distribution, time series of rainfall and reference evapotranspiration. The adherence of the estimated probabilities to the observed data was verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric test, with significance level...

CLIMATOLOGICAL WATER BALANCE WITH DATA ESTIMATED BY TROPICAL RAINFALL MEASURING MISSION FOR THE DOCE RIVER BASIN REA
Louzada,Franciane L. R. de O.; Xavier,Alexandre C.; Pezzopane,José E. M..
ABSTRACT The Climatic Water Balance (CLIMWB) is very used in the climatic characterization and can also offer important contribution in the identification of the water demand for irrigation of a region. For this, reliable precipitation data with good spatial coverage is required. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite -TRMM-3B43-v7 is a partnership between NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), which estimates rainfall data for the tropics region. The aim of this study is to evaluate the CLIMWB obtained by the Thornthwaite & Mather method (1955), with estimated rainfall data with the 3B43 product versus those generated with rainfall data and to map pixel-by-pixel water...

Climate risk in maize crop in the northeastern of Brazil based on climate change scenarios REA
Silva,Vicente de P. R. da; Campos,João H. B. da C.; Silva,Madson T..
This study evaluates the impacts of climate change on the agricultural zoning of climatic risk in maize crop cultivated in the Northeastern of Brazil, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. The water balance model, combined with geospatial technologies, was used to identify areas of the study region where the crops could suffer yield restrictions due to climate change. The data used in the study were the time series of rainfall with at least 30 years of daily data, crop coefficients, potential evapotranspiration and duration of the crop cycle. The scenarios of the increasing of air temperature used in the simulations were of 1.5ºC, 3ºC and 5ºC. The sowing date of maize crop from January to March appears to be less affected...

Macroinvertebrates under stochastic hydrological disturbance in Cerrado streams of Central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saito,Victor S.; Mazão,Gustavo R..
In the Cerrado vegetation, where the seasonal is well defined, rainfall has an important role in controlling the flow of streams and consequently on the structure of macroinvertebrates community. Despite the effects of rainfall associated with seasonality are well studied, little is known about the effects of stochastic rains on the community. In the present study we evaluated the structure and faunal composition of four first-order streams in Central Brazil during the dry season in two years, with and without stochastic rains. Community sampling was done by colonization of boards of high density polyethylene (HDPE), removed after one month submerged in streams. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) performed indicated no difference in rarefied richness between the...

Application of a microbial source tracking based on bacterial and chemical markers in headwater and coastal catchments ArchiMer
Jarde, Emilie; Jeanneau, Laurent; Harrault, Loic; Quenot, Emmanuelle; Solecki, Olivia; Petitjean, Patrice; Lozach, Solen; Cheve, Julien; Gourmelon, Michele.
This study identified sources of fecal contamination in three different French headwater and coastal catchments (the Justiçou, Pen an Traon, and La Fresnaye) using a combination of microbial source tracking tools. The tools included bacterial markers (three host-associated Bacteroidales) and chemical markers (six fecal stanols), which were monitored monthly over one or two years in addition to fecal indicator bacteria. 168 of the 240 freshwater and marine water samples had Escherichia coli (E. coli) or enterococci concentrations higher than “excellent” European water quality threshold. In the three catchments, the results suggested that the fecal contamination appeared to be primarily from an animal origin and particularly from a bovine origin in 52%...

Stygofaunal community trends along varied rainfall conditions: Deciphering ecological niche dynamics of a shallow calcrete in Western Australia ArchiMer
Saccò, Mattia; Blyth, Alison J.; Humphreys, William F.; Karasiewicz, Stephane; Meredith, Karina T.; Laini, Alex; Cooper, Steven J.b.; Bateman, Philip W.; Grice, Kliti.
Groundwaters host highly adapted fauna, known as stygofauna, which play a key role in maintaining the functional integrity of subterranean ecosystems. Stygofaunal niche studies provide insights into the ecological dynamics shaping the delicate balance between the hydrological conditions and community diversity patterns. This work aims to unravel the ecological trends of a calcrete stygofaunal community, with special focus on niche dynamics through the Outlying Mean Index analysis (OMI) and additional calculation of Within Outlying Mean Indexes (WitOMI), under three rainfall regimes. Temperature and pH changed significantly among different rainfall conditions (P < .001), and together with salinity were the most influential drivers in shaping stygofaunal...

Organic matter isotopes reveal enhanced rainfall activity in Northwestern Mediterranean borderland during warm substages of the last 200 kyr ArchiMer
Pasquier, Virgil; Toucanne, Samuel; Sansjofre, Pierre; Dixit, Yama; Revillon, Sidonie; Mokeddem, Zohra; Rabineau, Marina.
In this study we use bulk sediment organic matter stable isotopes (δ13Corg and δ15N) to examine the nature and timing of preserved organic matter in borehole PRGL1-4 from Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. This region is known as a transitional zone between the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and the North African monsoon system. In the Gulf of Lion (SE France), increased inputs of organic matter from sediment-laden rivers occurred during warm substages of the last 200 kyr (MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a; MIS 6d, and 6b). Increased terrestrial organic matter are inferred from organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg), and are interpreted as resulting from enhanced rainfall over the Rhone river catchment area. Such increase in terrestrial organic carbon induced...

SST Indexes in the Tropical South Atlantic for Forecasting Rainy Seasons in Northeast Brazil ArchiMer
Hounsou-gbo, Gbekpo Aubains; Servain, Jacques; Araujo, Moacyr; Caniaux, Guy; Bourles, Bernard; Fontenele, Diogenes; Martins, Eduardo Savio P. R..
May-to-July and February-to-April represent peak rainy seasons in two sub-regions of Northeast Brazil (NEB): Eastern NEB and Northern NEB respectively. In this paper, we identify key oceanic indexes in the tropical South Atlantic for driving these two rainy seasons. In Eastern NEB, the May-to-July rainfall anomalies present a positive relationship with the previous boreal winter sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the southeast tropical Atlantic (20 degrees-10 degrees S; 10 degrees W-5 degrees E). This positive relationship, which spread westward along the southern branch of the South Equatorial Current, is associated with northwesterly surface wind anomalies. A warmer sea surface temperature in the southwestern Atlantic warm pool increases the...

Tracking rainfall in the northern Mediterranean borderlands during sapropel deposition ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Mintoo, Charlie Morelle Angue; Fontanier, Christophe; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael.
The role of mid-latitude precipitation in the hydrological forcing leading to the deposition of sapropels in the Mediterranean Sea remains unclear. The new GDEC-4-2 borehole, East Corsica margin (northern Tyrrhenian Sea), provides the first precisely dated evidence for enhanced rainfall in the Western Mediterranean during warm intervals of interglacial periods over the last 547 kyr. Comparison of GDEC-4-2 proxy records with pollen sequences and speleothems from the central and eastern Mediterranean reveals that these pluvial events were regional in character and occurred probably in response to the intensification of the Mediterranean storm track along the northern Mediterranean borderlands in autumn/winter. Our dataset suggests that the timing of maxima...

Sediment transport in the Bay of Marseille : Role of extrem events. ArchiMer
Verney, Romaric; Jany, Cassandre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Pairaud, Ivane; Vousdoukas, Michalis I.; Pinazo, Christel; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Cann, Philippe.
Human pressures on ecosystems have increased significantly over the last decades, and especially Mediterranean coasts are strongly impacted by the development of big cities and industrialized area, such as the Bay of Marseille. Prior to any investigations on ecological or contamination impacts, it was necessary to understand sediment dynamics and its response to natural extreme events such as storm or heavy rainfall events. In situ observations were dedicated to understand the behavior of bed sediments, and their spatial distribution. A benthic station was deployed for three months to observe the impact of extreme events on hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in a critical zone of the study area. These measurementswere used to calibrate and validate the...

Reproductive seasonality of Geophagus steindachneri Eigenmann & Hildebrand, 1922 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in a tropical mountain river Neotropical Ichthyology
Rangel-Serpa,Federico; Torres,Mauricio.
Reproductive seasonality in tropical freshwater fishes is strongly influenced by rainfall. In lowlands, floods spill laterally to floodplains and fishes usually breed during the flooding season. In mountain rivers, floods are sudden and flush out aquatic organisms. Fishes in mountain rivers usually breed during dry seasons, what has been hypothesized as a strategy to reduce mortality due to strong floods. If that is the case, mouth-brooding fishes should suffer less from strong floods and should have more prolonged breeding seasons in mountain rivers. Here we investigated the breeding activity of a mouth-brooding cichlid (Geophagus steindachneri) in a mountain river in Colombia using three kinds of evidence: monthly variation of gonad weight, macroscopic...

An analysis of natural factors of traffic accidents involving Yezo deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) OAK
Kawata, Yukichika.
In Hokkaido, Japan, the number of Yezo deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) has recently increased drastically, causing a large number of deer-vehicle traffic accidents. This paper examines conditions related to deer-vehicle traffic accidents by analysing the following relationships: time of accident and lunar phase; time of accidents and time of sunrise/sunset; likelihood of accidents and rainfall patterns, temperature and season (particularly snow and hunting seasons). The results suggest that the potential for deer-vehicle traffic accidents increases during hunting and non-snow seasons when there is little or no rainfall, just before sunrise or just after sunset, or during a full, first quarter, or third quarter moon. A statistically significant relationship...
