Vineyard water status assessment using on-the-go thermal imaging and machine learning Organic Eprints
Gutiérrez, S.; Diago, M.P; Fernandez-Novales, J.; Tardaguila, J..
The high impact of irrigation in crop quality and yield in grapevine makes the development of plant water status monitoring systems an essential issue in the context of sustainable viticulture. This study presents an on-the-go approach for the estimation of vineyard water status using thermal imaging and machine learning. The experiments were conducted during seven different weeks from July to September in season 2016. A thermal camera was embedded on an all-terrain vehicle moving at 5 km/h to take on-the-go thermal images of the vineyard canopy at 1.2 m of distance and 1.0 m from the ground. The two sides of the canopy were measured for the development of side-specific and global models. Stem water potential was acquired and used as reference method....

Implementation Action Plan for organic food and farming research Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Niggli, Urs; Pearce, Bruce; Schlüter, Marco; Schmid, Otto; Cuoco, Eduardo; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The Implementation Action Plan completes TP Organics’ trilogy of key documents of the Research Vision to 2025 (Niggli et al 2008) and the Strategic Research Agenda (Schmid et al 2009). The Implementation Action Plan addresses important areas for a successful implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. It explores the strength of Europe’s organic sector on the world stage with about one quarter of the world’s organic agricultural land in 2008 and accounting for more than half of the global organic market. The aims and objectives of organic farming reflect a broad range of societal demands on the multiple roles of agriculture and food production of not only producing commodities but also ecosystem services. These are important for Europe’s economic...

Ganzheitlichkeit in der Forschung zum Öko-Landbau Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian.

Vizija za raziskovalni program za ekoživila in ekološko kmetijstvo do leta 2025 Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Slabe, Anamarija; Schmid, Otto; Halberg, Niels; Schlüter, Marco.
The TP Organics Vision Research Agenda was prepared between June 2007 and July 2008 on the basis of wide-ranging discussions with farmers’ organizations, scientists, organic traders and retailers, and EU-wide umbrella organizations representing a variety of commercial, non-commercial and civil interests. Up to now, research projects and national framework programmes on organic agriculture have addressed immediate technology gaps in organic agriculture and food production. This Vision has been politically expedient and has given rise to a greater number of producers and professional skills for the task of serving unexpectedly fast growing consumer driven markets. Thus, many organic research projects had a short term perspective only. In contrast to this,...

Going towards Organic 3.0 Organic Eprints
Rahmann, G..
Organic 3.0 discussions have released a discussion about the future development of the Organic sector (Rahmann et al. 2016). There are many think tanks started ideas (Arbenz et al. 2017). Most of the ideas are very rough and not with practical visions for research. But there should be no time lost, that Organic takes the leadership for innovations, that helps to tackle with the future challenges, to design clear pathways to be more sustainable: food supply and to have ownership for the definition of ecology, health, care, fair and quality.

Incorporating Agroecology Into Organic Research - An Ongoing Challenge Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs.
Agroecology - as a scientific discipline and as an approach to sustainable farming practice - has objectives similar to those of organic agriculture. The paper sharpens the profile of both concepts and identifies strengths and weaknesses. The overarching challenge of both is to minimize trade-offs between food and fiber production on the one hand and non-commodity ecosystem services on the other hand. A comparison of the two approaches may well be inspiring, especially for the future development of organic food systems. Best use of human, social and natural capital characterizes organic farmers, especially in developing countries, as documented by many case studies from sub Saharan Africa. That also applies to organic farms in temperate zones, although...

The role of subjective norms in theory of planned behavior in the context of organic food consumption Organic Eprints
Al-Swidi, Abdullah; Huque, Sheikh Mohammed Rafiul; Hafeez, Muhammad Haroon; Shariff, Mohd Noor Mohd.
The purpose of the paper is to investigate the applicability of theory of planned behavior (TPB) with special emphasis on measuring the direct and moderating effect of subjective norms on attitude, perceived behavioral control and buying intention in context of buying organic food. Structured questionnaires were randomly distributed among academic staffs and students of two universities in southern Punjab, Pakistan. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed model fit. Results of the study showed that subjective norms significantly moderate the relationship between attitude and buying intention as well as between perceived behavior control and buying intention. Furthermore, subjective norms significantly influence attitude toward...

Koproduktion von Wissen in der Entwicklung des Biolandbaus - Einflüsse von Marginalisierung, Anerkennung und Markt Organic Eprints
Aeberhard, Andrea; Rist, PD Dr. Stephan.
The empirical analysis of the historical development of transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge (CPK) in organic agriculture (OA) in Switzerland has revealed three distinct phases. The initial phase shows various characteristics of transdisciplinary CPK and a high importance of experiential knowledge. The 2nd and 3rd phases involve an in-creasing segregation of farmers’, extension agents’, and scientists’ knowledge, caused by internal and external impacts, i.e. foundation of independent research institutions, changes in agriculture policy, and new market strategies. These developments strikingly represent an ambiguous trend: the growing societal and political recognition of OA and the increasing market, which are positive achievements, are...

The importance of support to coordination of the European organic research Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
Europe has been among the global leaders in research and innovation in high-quality food from organic agriculture serving the dual purpose of responding to consumers’ demand in high-value markets and respond-ing to national and EU agri-environmental and rural development poli-cies. There has been — and still is — a great need for research and innovation in organic food and farming because of its relatively recent development and because it is an alternative, which is very knowledge-intensive: a knowledge that cannot always be covered by results from mainstream agricultural research. In order to follow the principles of organic agriculture as laid out in, for example, Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 (1) (e.g. ‘the appropriate design and management of...
