Microparticulate feeds for Penaeid larvae ArchiMer

The mass production of penaeid larvae still depends on live foods such as diatoms, Chlorella and Artemia . However, it requires much facilities, maintenance expenses, and labor to produce a desired amount of life foods safely and constantly. Also, the nutritive value of planktonic organisms is occasionally variable and this makes the use of live food for mass culture restrictive. Therefore, it is necessary to develop microparticulate diets as a substitute for live foods to further increase the productivity of seed for shrimp culture.

A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer

In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). The nutritional requirements of the Japanese shrimp Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer

Penaeus japonicus is probably the best known species among penaeids or even among shrimps. In juveniles, the protein requirement was best studied and Japanese shrimp appears as the most demanding penaeid species. They may be related to several factors such as energy level of the diet, digestibility or biological value of protein or other nutritional factors. The essential amino acids are well known, however from a quantitative point of view the requirements in each of these amino acids remain to be determined.

A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer

In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer

Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.

The influence of the soil quality of culture pond on the physiological state of Penaeus stylirostris reared in earthen shrimp pond in New Caledonia was investigated by the measurement of the osmoregulatory capacity and magnesium hemolymph concentration of samples of 20 of these shrimp captured in the pond and maintained for 24 or 48h in cages laid on the bottom. A first experiment was affected by the occurrence of a pathology caused by Vibrio penaeicida probably due to initial handling stress. The second experiment showed that the osmoregulatory capacity is depresssed as a function of the soil quality : the more it is reduced the more the depression is important.

Laboratory Studies of penaeid feeding and nutrition were performed at the Galveston laboratory of NMFS between 1963 and 1985. Earliest studies used field-collected Penaeus aztecus postlarval and juvenile stages of both wild and laboratory-spawned P. aztecus and P. setiferus and laboratory-spawned P. vannamei and P. stylirostris were later included.

Evolution de la communaute bacterienne heterotrophe de l'eau de mer lors d'une experience d'aquaculture de crevettes peneides en systemes clos ArchiMer

The quantitative and qualitative evolution of the heterotrophic bacterial community of sea water was studied throughout an experimental rearing of Penaeus japonicus in closed systems. Cluster analysis was realised on 417 strains coming from water sampled at different moments of the experiment. This collection includes 40 strains coming from a mussel used for diet and 40 strains coming from the digestive tract of one prawn after six months rearing. Quantitative and qualitative studies have both shown a similar evolution of heterotrophic microflora whatever the initial animal load was. Infectious pathology in mollusc and shrimp hatcheries ArchiMer

Development of aquaculture has been linked to zootechnical mastering of larval production in hatcheries. Regular and excessive use of antibiotics (antifungal or antibacterial) may thus also be reduced, permitting to limit release of these products in sea-water and, consequently, avoiding progressive selection of resistant-strains.

The role of astaxanthin in shrimp pigmentation ArchiMer

Carotenoids are exogenously derived isoprenoid compounds which are responsible for pigmentation in crustaceans. While implants and bacteria are able to synthesize these carotenoids de novo, shrimps like other animals entirely depend on their dietary supply. The major carotenoid found in most crustacean tissues and responsible, e.g. for the typical colour of penaeids is astaxanthin. With increasing industrialization in shrimp farming there is a growing demand for synthetic, nature-identical carotenoids, not only for pigmentation, but also for the maintenance of growth and fertility.

Some nutrients known as non essential in vertebrates could be essential in invertebrates and could be related to some "unknown growth factors" which were evidenced or suspected, mainly in mollusc or crustacean flesh or meal, by several authors working on different species of crustaceans. A set of experiments was carried out in our laboratory in order to isolate one of these factors found in squid meal.

L'exploitation mondiale des crustaces: Bilan et perspectives ArchiMer

Since nearly twenty years, world exploitation of crustaceans increases from 1,263,000 tons in 1968 to 3,419,000 tons in 1985, overcoming the predictions of 1970 by more than one million tons. Penaeid prawns fisheries experienced a very fast development. The krill resource proved to be practically commercially unworkable. By now, the major crustaceans stocks appear fully exploited. During the same period, penaeid aquaculture experienced a fast growth, which should continue in the near future.

Evaluación de niveles de proteína y densidades de siembra en el crecimiento del camarón blanco Litopenaeus schmitti OceanDocs

Para evaluar el efecto de diferentes niveles de proteína y densidades de siembra sobre el crecimiento de juveniles de camarón Litopaneus schmitti, se desarrolló un diseño experimental totalmente aleatorizado en estanque de tierra durante 72 días, con 16 tratamientos y 3 repeticiones, combinando tres niveles de proteína alimentar para definir la contribución del alimento natural al crecimiento de los camarones. La contribución del alimento natural al crecimiento fue entre 58.2 - 87.9% y los copépodos constituyeron el 65% del total de organismos del zoobentos. Una alta correlación negativa se encontró entre la cantidad de organismos epibentónicos y las densidades de siembra ensayadas.

Evaluación de diferentes alimentos artificiales en el engorde de juveniles de Camarón Blanco Litopenaeus schmitti OceanDocs

Este trabajo se realizó con el objetivo de lograr alimentos nutricionalmente más eficientes y económicos en el cultivo del camarón blanco Litopenaeus schmitti. Se desarrolló durante 63 días en estanques de tierra fertilizados de 250 m2 . Se emplearon juveniles de 0.4 ± 0.01 g de peso promedio procedentes del área de precriaderos. Los camarones fueron sembrados a igual densidad que en la escala productiva con sistema semiintensivo (10 camarones/m2). La preparación y manejo de los estanques se efectuó de igual forma que en la producción.
