Zerbato,Cristiano; Furlani,Carlos E. A.; Silva,Rouverson P. da; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Santos,Adão F. Dos.
ABSTRACT The digging of peanut, which has the pod production in the subsurface, is directly affected by soil conditions, physical or environmental characteristics, at the time of operation and may be the cause of unwanted losses. Therefore, the quality of the operation is very important for minimizing these losses. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of mechanized digging operation of peanut according to three soil textural classes (Sandy, Medium and Loamy) and their water content conditions at operation through statistical process control. The experiment was conducted at three locations in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, under sampling scheme arranged in tracks and 40 sampling points for each textural class of soil, using the mechanical digging...

Construction and calibration of TDR probes for volumetric water content estimation in a Distroferric Red Latosol REA
Soncela,Rosimaldo; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Vilas Boas,Marcio A.; Tavares,Maria H. F.; Smanhotto,Adriana.
The determination of volumetric water content of soils is an important factor in irrigation management. Among the indirect methods for estimating, the time-domain reflectometry (TDR) technique has received a significant attention. Like any other technique, it has advantages and disadvantages, but its greatest disadvantage is the need of calibration and high cost of acquisition. The main goal of this study was to establish a calibration model for the TDR equipment, Trase System Model 6050X1, to estimate the volumetric water content in a Distroferric Red Latosol. The calibration was carried out in a laboratory with disturbed soil samples under study, packed in PVC columns of a volume of 0.0078m³. The TDR probes were handcrafted with three rods and 0.20m...

GPS receivers for georeferencing of spatial variability of soil attributes REA
Rosalen,David L; Rodrigues,Marcos S; Chioderoli,Carlos A; Brandão,Flavia J. C; Siqueira,Diego S.
The characterization of the spatial variability of soil attributes is essential to support agricultural practices in a sustainable manner. The use of geostatistics to characterize spatial variability of these attributes, such as soil resistance to penetration (RP) and gravimetric soil moisture (GM) is now usual practice in precision agriculture. The result of geostatistical analysis is dependent on the sample density and other factors according to the georeferencing methodology used. Thus, this study aimed to compare two methods of georeferencing to characterize the spatial variability of RP and GM as well as the spatial correlation of these variables. Sampling grid of 60 points spaced 20 m was used. For RP measurements, an electronic penetrometer was used...

Differences in soil electrical resistivity tomography due to soil water contents in an integrated agricultural system PAB
Bernardi,Alberto Carlos de Campos; Pitrat,Thomas; Rabello,Ladislau Marcelino; Pezzopane,José Ricardo Macedo; Bosi,Cristiam; Mazzuco,Giulia Guillen; Bettio,Giovana Maranhão.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize the spatial variability of soil electrical resistivity due to different soil moisture contents, in an integrated agricultural system. Soil electrical resistivity (ER) was measured with the Automatic Resistivity Profiling (ARP) contact sensor in two dates, in 2016, in a 9.7-ha area with different soil moisture contents. The obtained maps indicated that ER allowed delimiting the regions within the study area and pointing out differences in the movement and accumulation of water in the soil horizons. Although there is a trend of reduction in ER values with increasing soil moisture, the spatial correlation structure of ER is similar.

Influence of woody species on aerial growth of perennial grasses in semi-arid rangelands of central Argentina Phyton
Blazquez,FR; Peláez,DV; Andrioli,RJ; Elia,OR.
The interaction between woody and grass species in semi-arid rangelands of central Argentina was assessed through the evaluation of the impact of woody species on grass growth over a 2-y period. The study comprised two morpho-physiologically different woody species and two cool-season perennial grass species highly preferred by domestic livestock. The study involved the assessment of total green length (TGL) and number of green leaves (NGL) per tiller in grasses growing beneath the canopy of woody species and in open rangeland areas. Soil temperature, pH and water, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter content were estimated at the same study sites. Precipitation during the study period was also recorded. Woody species induced higher TGL of grasses...

Effect of Environmental Factors on Seed Germination and Early Seedling Emergence of Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) Planta Daninha
LIU,X.; ZONG,T.; LI,Y.; ZHOU,X.; BAI,L..
ABSTRACT: Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) is an emerging invasive weed in rape and wheat fields in China. A better understanding of its germination and emergence ecology will enable the development of integrated weed control strategies. In this study, we investigated the effects of temperature, photoperiod, soil water content, salinity, and burial depth, on germination and emergence of Carolina geranium. Germination percentages were over 74% under 15/20 and 20/25 oC night/day temperature regimes. Germination rate was independent of light/dark regime. Increasing salinity reduced germination of Carolina geranium from 81.1% at 0 mM to 0% at 160 mM NaCl. Seeds germination was peaked at 50% soil moisture, but was completely inhibited at < 20% and...

Modeling Root Growth, Crop Growth and N Uptake of Winter Wheat Based on SWMS_2D: Model and Validation Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Yang,Dejun; Bian,Zhengfu; Zhang,Kefeng; Xiong,Jibing; Lei,Shaogang.
ABSTRACT Simulations for root growth, crop growth, and N uptake in agro-hydrological models are of significant concern to researchers. SWMS_2D is one of the most widely used physical hydrologically related models. This model solves equations that govern soil-water movement by the finite element method, and has a public access source code. Incorporating key agricultural components into the SWMS_2D model is of practical importance, especially for modeling some critical cereal crops such as winter wheat. We added root growth, crop growth, and N uptake modules into SWMS_2D. The root growth model had two sub-models, one for root penetration and the other for root length distribution. The crop growth model used was adapted from EU-ROTATE_N, linked to the N...

Compared performance of penetrometers and effect of soil water content on penetration resistance measurements Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Mome Filho,Edison Aparecido; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Gimenes,Fernando Henrique Setti; Vitti,André Cesar.
Modern agriculture techniques have a great impact on crops and soil quality, especially by the increased machinery traffic and weight. Several devices have been developed for determining soil properties in the field, aimed at managing compacted areas. Penetrometry is a widely used technique; however, there are several types of penetrometers, which have different action modes that can affect the soil resistance measurement. The objective of this study was to compare the functionality of two penetrometry methods (manual and automated mode) in the field identification of compacted, highly mechanized sugarcane areas, considering the influence of soil water volumetric content (θ) on soil penetration resistance (PR). Three sugarcane fields on a Rhodic Eutrudrox...

Emission of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from semi-arid tropical soils in Chiapas México Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ponce-Mendoza,Alejandro; Ceballos-Ramírez,Juan Manuel; Gutierrez-Micelli,Federico; Dendooven,Luc.
The semi-arid region of Chiapas is dominated by N2 -fixing shrubs, e.g., Acacia angustissima. Urea-fertilized soil samples under maize were collected from areas covered and uncovered by A. angustissima in different seasons and N2O and CO2 emissions were monitored. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of urea and of the rainy and dry season on gas emissions from semi-arid soil under laboratory conditions. Urea and soil use had no effect on CO2 production. Nitrons oxide emission from soil was three times higher in the dry than in the rainy season, while urea fertilization doubled emissions. Emissions were twice as high from soil sampled under A. angustissima canopy than from arable land, but 1.2 lower than from soil sampled outside the...

Pedotransfer functions related to spatial variability of water retention attributes for lowland soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nebel,Álvaro Luiz Carvalho; Timm,Luís Carlos; Cornelis,Wim; Gabriels,Donald; Reichardt,Klaus; Aquino,Leandro Sanzi; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Reinert,Dalvan José.
The estimation of non available soil variables through the knowledge of other related measured variables can be achieved through pedotransfer functions (PTF) mainly saving time and reducing cost. Great differences among soils, however, can yield non desirable results when applying this method. This study discusses the application of developed PTFs by several authors using a variety of soils of different characteristics, to evaluate soil water contents of two Brazilian lowland soils. Comparisons are made between PTF evaluated data and field measured data, using statistical and geostatistical tools, like mean error, root mean square error, semivariogram, cross-validation, and regression coefficient. The eight tested PTFs to evaluate gravimetric soil water...
