Resilience and Higher Order Thinking Ecology and Society
Fazey, Ioan; School of Geography and Geosciences; ioan.fazey@st-andrews.ac.uk.
To appreciate, understand, and tackle chronic global social and environmental problems, greater appreciation of the importance of higher order thinking is required. Such thinking includes personal epistemological beliefs (PEBs), i.e., the beliefs people hold about the nature of knowledge and how something is known. These beliefs have profound implications for the way individuals relate to each other and the world, such as how people understand complex social-ecological systems. Resilience thinking is an approach to environmental stewardship that includes a number of interrelated concepts and has strong foundations in systemic ways of thinking. This paper (1) summarizes a review of educational psychology literature on PEBs, (2) explains why resilience...

There is an increasing demand in higher education institutions for training in complex environmental problems. Such training requires a careful mix of conventional methods and innovative solutions, a task not always easy to accomplish. In this paper we review literature on this theme, highlight relevant advances in the pedagogical literature, and report on some examples resulting from our recent efforts to teach complex environmental issues. The examples range from full credit courses in sustainable development and research methods to project-based and in-class activity units. A consensus from the literature is that lectures are not sufficient to fully engage students in these issues. A conclusion from the review of examples is that problem-based and...

Online Publication Enhances Integration of Current Research in the Classroom Ecology and Society
Drew, C. Ashton; North Carolina State University; cadrew@unity.ncsu.edu; Hess, George R; North Carolina State University; george_hess@ncsu.edu.
Integrating current research materials and issues into graduate courses provides students with exposure to emerging concepts and methods. New online journal formats that allow authors to include raw data and model code provide a unique opportunity to bring current research into the classroom. We developed a graduate-level landscape ecology assignment using data and code provided as appendices to an article in Conservation Ecology. Our assignment required students to engage actively with the published material, was positively reviewed by the students, and prompted valuable discussion.

Knowledge about and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among pre-service teachers: a comparative study of Turkey and Slovenia Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Sorgo,Andrej; Ambrozic-Dolinsek,Jana; Usak,Muhammet; Özel,Murat.
Genetically modified organisms cannot be regarded as merely a topic for academic debate, since these have serious implications as a research field and for production based on genetic engineering. Public debates rarely base their arguments on elements rooted in scientific arguments and knowledge but are heavily loaded with emotions, opinions and informal reasoning. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among prospective teachers in Slovenia and Turkey. Knowledge of genetic modification was measured with a two-tier instrument. The level of acceptance of genetic modification was measured with a 17-item instrument. Findings revealed that knowledge of genetics and biotechnology barely influenced the...

A practical approach to the understanding and teaching of RNA silencing in plants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Bazzini,Ariel A; Mongelli,Vanesa C; Hopp,H. Esteban; del Vas,Mariana; Asurmendi,Sebastián.
Gene silencing, also called RNA interference (RNAi) is a specific mechanism of RNA degradation involved in gene regulation, development and defense in eukaryotic organisms. It became an important subject in the teaching programs of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology courses in the last years. The aim of this work is to provide simple and inexpensive assays to understand and teach gene silencing using plants as model systems. The use of transient and permanent transgenic plants for expressing reporter genes, like those derived from jellyfish green fluorescent protein (gfp) encoding gene, provides a nice, colorful and conclusive image of gene silencing. Three experimental approaches to evidence RNA silencing are depicted. In the first approach...

Teaching evolutionary biology Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tidon,Rosana; Lewontin,Richard C..
Evolutionary Biology integrates several disciplines of Biology in a complex and interactive manner, where a deep understanding of the subject demands knowledge in diverse areas. Since this knowledge is often inaccessible to the majority of specialized professionals, including the teachers, we present some reflections in order to stimulate discussions aimed at the improvement of the conditions of education in this area. We examine the profile of evolutionary teaching in Brazil, based on questionnaires distributed to teachers in Secondary Education in the Federal District, on data provided by the "National Institute for Educational Studies and Research", and on information collected from teachers working in various regions of this country. Issues related to...

Scope of Anatomy Teaching in Problem-based Learning (PBL) Sessions of Integrated Medical Curriculum International Journal of Morphology
Potu,Bhagath Kumar; Shwe,Wuna Hla; Jagadeesan,Saravanan; Aung,Thidar; Cheng,Peh Suat.
Problem based learning (PBL) made a great impact on the methodology of teaching. The major advantage of PBL method of teaching is integration of basic and clinical sciences in an integrated curriculum. This is achieved by presenting clinical problems to students which contain learning objectives from subjects related to the given clinical problems. In recent reports deficiencies have been reported regarding quantity of anatomy content of the clinical problems which has resulted in difficulty in understanding of theanatomy. We have made an attempt to quantify the content of anatomy and its sub-disciplines in PBL curriculum by a case study method using 'documentary analysis' at School of Medicine and Health Sciences, UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia....

Use of Clinical Cases in a Virtual Learning Environment as an Approach to Teaching Human Embryology International Journal of Morphology
Ginani,Fernanda; Gadelha Vasconcelos,Rodrigo; Galvão Barboza,Carlos Augusto.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual learning as an approach to teaching human embryology. For this purpose, clinical cases comprising the six major topics of human embryology were organized into a blog in order to complement the content discussed in the classroom. Scientific articles were made available to reinforce theoretical contents and ethical-humanistic issues were addressed in discussion forums. The mean grades of the students at the end of the semester were compared with those of the previous semester when the method had not been applied. Student perceptions of blog effectiveness were evaluated using an electronic questionnaire. A substantial increase in mean grades was observed compared to the previous class....

Learning Surgical Anatomy in the Field of Microsurgical Reconstructive Surgery: A new Pedagogic Method on Human Fresh Cadavers International Journal of Morphology
Laroche,Carine; Vacher,Christian.
Microsurgical vascular anastomosis in reconstructive surgery learning is usually based on rat dissection. But this technique does not allow dissection of the flap, preparing of the recipient vessels training, and suturing in conditions as realistic as possible of the surgery. The aim of this study was to describe a technique of surgical anatomy learning on human fresh cadavers, easy to perform and to evaluate its pedagogic interest. In the first part of the study, six fresh cadavers have been dissected simulating 6 forearm flaps with growing difficulty. In the second part of the study, 30 residents in surgery were evaluated on their ability to recognize main anatomic structures and to perform microsurgical anastomosis, of forearm flaps anastomosed on...

The Practice of Dissection as Teaching Methodology in Anatomy Applied to Medical Education International Journal of Morphology
Aversi-Ferreira,Tales Alexandre; Nascimento,Guilherme Nobre Lima do; Vera,Ivânia; Lucchese,Roselma.
In 2003, the UFG Faculty of Medicine, to revamp its educational project, reduced the hourly load of some subjects, among them those of anatomy, which in general leads to eliminate the practice of dissection. This practice is essential for the basic training of students, being then used in other sciences such as pathology. The objective of this study was to compare and link data between groups that made or did not make dissection after the anatomy course. Questionnaires were issued to 86 medical students from the UFG Faculty of Medicine, and from these, 10 made dissection and 76 did not. Analyzing the answers, it was found that both groups recognize the importance of this practice for the knowledge of the anatomy discipline and for future disciplines or...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using Mind Maps in teaching anatomy and compare it with traditional based slide. This cross-sectional research was carried out in 2009 on 79 second year medical undergraduate students at Ahvaz Jondishapour University of Medical sciences. Four class lectures on the topics of head and neck osteology were taught. The lectures were slide based designed that were chosen from the chapters in the anatomy textbooks and presented by means of a video projection power point system. The students divided randomly into two groups; one group educated by traditional slides while the other by mind map based designed ones. At the end of the term, a multiple-choice involved forty test was undertaken from two groups....

PRICING STRATEGY UNDER MONOPOLY CONDITIONS: AN EXPERIMENT FOR THE CLASSROOM AgEcon
Nelson, Robert G.; Beil, Richard O., Jr..
This classroom experiment allows students to explore pricing strategies available to the monopolist. Students are given full information about their costs but know nothing about demand except that it is simulated by the instructor. They submit their price-asked and quantity-offered records on one day and receive the quantity-sold response from the instructor on the next day, continuing this routine until they discover the profit-maximizing price and quantity. One of the objectives is to demonstrate that search strategies based on economic principles (MC=MR) can be more efficient than trial-and-error.

Teaching with Technology to Engage Students and Enhance Learning AgEcon
Lass, Daniel A.; Morzuch, Bernard J.; Rogers, Richard T..
Teaching technology effects on student learning in a large lecture introductory statistics course were tested. Findings show in-class personal response systems and on-line homework/quizzes significantly improve student exam scores. We infer proven small class techniques, participating in class and doing homework via technologies, can restore sound pedagogy in larger classes. The experiment was conducted using just one class, but factors usually unaccounted for in assessment research were controlled, especially the instructor and other materials. The technologies investigated here can provide learning benefits to students even in larger courses often criticized for their inability to provide students quality learning experiences.

Integrating Research and Education AgEcon
Schroeder, Ted C..
University faculty have numerous responsibilities, but development of our own and our students’ human capital is our primary job. To effectively develop human capital of others requires investing heavily in our own capital. This includes being actively involved in discovering knowledge. In addition, as agricultural economists, our clientele demand relevant research output which requires regularly informing them about our research. Conducting research, publishing and communicating findings to interested parties better equips us to provide a quality teaching program. This article presents an accumulation of evidence supporting this view and provides insights about how these activities might be integrated.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR AGRICULTURAL ECONOMISTS AT NON-LAND GRANT COLLEGES: RESULTS OF A SURVEY AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Lovejoy, Stephen B..
This paper provides information about the nonagricultural academic job market to students and administrators in Agricultural Economics departments. Particularly, we report the results of a survey sent to 295 non-Land Grant economics departments which met our criteria of offering only a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Of the 101 returned surveys, 45% indicated that they would consider hiring an Agricultural Economist to fill a faculty position within their department. These schools indicated that they place greater value on teaching-related experiences than research publications in prospective faculty members. We propose the implementation of mentoring programs within Agricultural Economics departments. Such programs would allow students to learn...

MORALE AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AgEcon
Purcell, Wayne D..
Morale and faculty development are closely related. The agricultural economics profession must decide what it is about. There is room to practice the principle of comparative advantage and allow a degree of specialization in teaching, extension, and research. To continue in the role of an applied discipline, there must also be an opportunity for the young professional to establish rapport with, and understanding of, the private sector and the policy-making arena. If that is to happen, there must be encouragement in the institutional setting and by faculty colleagues who respect the importance of investment in building rapport and in establishing credibility. If that environment is present, morale should be good and faculty development will occur.
