Spatial Organization of Environmental Knowledge: Conservation Conflicts in the Inhabited Forest of Northern Thailand Ecology and Society
Roth, Robin; York University; rothr@yorku.ca.
Managing forests for their satisfactory provision of multiple goods and services to both the global and local commons requires effective cross-scale cooperation between local management institutions and state management institutions. Integrating the distinct sets of knowledge produced and used at the two scales of management has proven very challenging. This paper shows how a better understanding of the spatial expression of knowledge operating at distinct scales can help lead to a more fruitful integration of local knowledge and practice with state knowledge and practice. Using a case study from northern Thailand, this paper examines the links between the production of knowledge and the production of space within resource management institutions. It then...

Impacts of the 2010 Droughts and Floods on Community Welfare in Rural Thailand: Differential Effects of Village Educational Attainment Ecology and Society
Climatic events can have disastrous consequences on rural livelihoods, which rely mainly on agriculture and natural resources. The way households and communities respond to climatic shocks depends on their available resources. We formulated that education is a human capital asset that can increase coping abilities in difficult times because education improves access to both social and economic resources. Based on the Thai government surveys of the living conditions and life quality of 68,343 rural villages for the years 2009 and 2011, we investigated the impacts of floods and droughts in 2010 on community welfare, i.e., consumption and income in 2011 at the village level. Using difference-in-difference methods, we analyzed how differential demographic...

The capacity to adapt?: communities in a changing climate, environment, and economy on the northern Andaman coast of Thailand Ecology and Society
Bennett, Nathan J.; Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, University of British Columbia; nathan.bennett@ubc.ca; Dearden, Philip; Department of Geography, University of Victoria; pdearden@office.geog.uvic.ca; Murray, Grant; Institute for Coastal Research, Vancouver Island University; Grant.Murray@viu.ca; Kadfak, Alin; School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg; alin.kadfak@globalstudies.gu.se.
The health and productivity of marine ecosystems, habitats, and fisheries are deteriorating on the Andaman coast of Thailand. Because of their high dependence on natural resources and proximity to the ocean, coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to climate-induced changes in the marine environment. These communities must also adapt to the impacts of management interventions and conservation initiatives, including marine protected areas, which have livelihood implications. Further, communities on the Andaman coast are also experiencing a range of new economic opportunities associated in particular with tourism and agriculture. These complex and ongoing changes require integrated assessment of, and deliberate planning to increase, the adaptive...

Revision on the genus Phyllagathis (Melastomataceae: Sonerileae). I. The species in Burma, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra Naturalis
Cellinese, Nicoletta.
A revision of the genus Phyllagathis Blume is presented under a wider generic concept than used by earlier authors. A comprehensive synopsis of the genus is provided in the general part, where morphological characters and their variations are discussed. This paper will focus in particular on the species occurring in Burma, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia), and Sumatra. Here, the genus includes 10 species, most of which are endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, with only two species endemic to Thailand (P. siamensis and P. tuberosa), and two other also occurring outside the Malaysian political boundaries (P. rotundifolia and P. hispida). Part II of this paper will treat the species of Borneo and Natuna Island.

Two new gastropods, Elysia bangtawaensis and E. siamensis from southern Thailand (Opisthobranchia, Sacoglossa, Elysiidae) Naturalis
Swennen, C..
Two new Elysia species were found in brackish mangrove habitats in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand in the area around Pattani. Elysia bangtawaensis, a large species with grooved rhinophores, was discovered living on bare mud in mangrove forests. This species looks like a fallen leaf and shows sophisticated phototrophic behaviour enabling it to survive without feeding while producing many eggs over a long period. Elysia siamensis, a small species, was found on filamentous green algae in a brackish channel. The latter species has long, thin, cylindrical rhinophores, and is further characterized by a screw-like penis, and a long thin process on the tip of its metapodium.

Hoya thuathienhuensis and Hoya graveolens (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), a new species and a new record for the Flora of Vietnam Naturalis
Rodda, M.; Trân, Thê Bách; Simonsson Juhonewe, N.; Sâm, Lý Ngọc.
A new species from the Annamite mountain range of central Vietnam, Hoya thuathienhuensis, is here described and illustrated. Its flowers bear similarity with Hoya lockii, a taxon recently described from the same area with which it shares the reflexed corolla and the thin coriaceous laves. Hoya lockii is an epiphytic shrub, whereas H. thuathienhuensis is a strong climbing liana. We also report the noteworthy extension into southern Vietnam of Hoya graveolens, a taxon previously considered to be endemic of Thailand.

Chromosome numbers and other karyological data of four Stemona species (Stemonaceae) from Thailand Naturalis
Hartl, M.; Kiehn, M..
Chromosome numbers and other karyological data of four Stemona spp. (Stemonaceae) from Thailand are reported. Three taxa (S. collinsae Craib, S. kerrii Craib and an unidentified species) exhibit 2n = 14 chromosomes, for S. curtisii Hook.f. a range of 2n = 13–16 was established. Based on the counts of c. 30% of the species of Stemona, x = 7 is very likely to be the basic number for the genus. Chromosome size and morphology of the investigated species are compared with literature data and show differences that might be of importance for infrageneric classification. In this connection the taxonomic position of the genus Pentastemona from Sumatra is also discussed.

Gymnodoris pattani, a new dorid nudibranch from Pattani Bay, Gulf of Thailand (Gastropoda, Nudibranchia) Naturalis
Swennen, C..
Several specimens of a new dorid nudibranch have been found in Yaring River, Pattani Province in southern Thailand. The species clearly belongs to the genus Gymnodoris, and is described and named G. pattani. It can be distinguished from all other species described in the genus by its translucently greenish colour, lack of notable colour markings, smooth skin, low number of about 3 lamellae on the rhinophores, a circlet of about 20 simple gill leaflets, its broad foot, and its brackish water habitat.

Two new sacoglossans (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia) from Thailand Naturalis
Swennen, C..
Two new sacoglossans were found in brackish mangrove habitats near Pattani in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand. Both are small species (< 10 mm) living hidden in clay with small green algae high in the intertidal zone becoming not submerged for days. They have black pigment on the dorsal side and their bodies clearly consist of two parts. One is named Gascoignella nukuli n. sp., which looks similar to G. aprica Jensen, 1985 from Hong Kong, but differs in radula, penial spine, body proportions and habitat. The other is G. jabae n. sp., which has two parallel cerata instead of a visceral sack on the posterior side of the body.
