Zenteno Cruz, Guillermo Alberto.

Genotypic variation in morphology and freezing resistance of Eucalyptus globulus seedlings subjected to drought hardening in nursery Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Coopman,Rafael E; Jara,Jorge C; Escobar,Rene; Corcuera,Luis J; Bravo,Leon A.
Eucalyptus globulus Labill is one of the most planted species in Chile, because of its fast growth and superior pulp qualities. Nevertheless, the incidence of drought and frost damage immediately after planting is frequent. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of drought hardening on frost resistance and on variations in morphological traits that may increase drought resistance at nursery phase in four genotypes of E. globulus Labill. Drought hardening treatments consisted in induced water stress by watering restriction, until pre-dawn stem xylem water potentials (Ψpd) reached -0.2, -1.8 and -2.6 MPa. Two water stress-rewatering cycles were applied during 54 days of hardening. Plant and root biomasses were affected by the interaction...

SUNFLOWER EMERGENCE AND INITIAL GROWTH IN SOIL WITH WATER EXCESS REA
Loose,Luis H.; Heldwein,Arno B.; Lucas,Dioneia D. P.; Hinnah,Fernando D.; Bortoluzzi,Mateus P..
ABSTRACT: Sunflower crops are grown in different regions worldwide. However, the stress caused by water excess in the soil impairs this crop growth and yield. The aim of the present study was to determine the response of sunflower plants to long periods of water excess during initial development stages. Water excess treatments were applied at the initial development of these plants at the sowing day, three days after sowing, at plant emergence, and at V2 and V4 stages. The treatments had different duration periods (0, 48, 96, 144, 192, and 240 hours) and were applied at three sowing dates. The current experiment is factorial and was carried out according to a completely random design. Two plant pots, treated under greenhouse conditions, made up the...

Differential gene expression and mitotic cell analysis of the drought tolerant soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill Fabales, Fabaceae) cultivar MG/BR46 (Conquista) under two water deficit induction systems Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martins,Polyana K.; Jordão,Berenice Q.; Yamanaka,Naoki; Farias,José R.B.; Beneventi,Magda A.; Binneck,Eliseu; Fuganti,Renata; Stolf,Renata; Nepomuceno,Alexandre L..
Drought cause serious yield losses in soybean (Glycine max), roots being the first plant organ to detect the water-stress signals triggering defense mechanisms. We used two drought induction systems to identify genes differentially expressed in the roots of the drought-tolerant soybean cultivar MG/BR46 (Conquista) and characterize their expression levels during water deficit. Soybean plants grown in nutrient solution hydroponically and in sand-pots were submitted to water stress and gene expression analysis was conducted using the differential display (DD) and real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. Three differentially expressed mRNA transcripts showed homology to the Antirrhinum majus basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor bHLH, the...

Growth of sweet pepper plants submitted to water tensions in soil and potassium silicate doses Horticultura Brasileira
Pereira,Alexandre Igor A; Guimarães,João de Jesus; Costa,João Victor; Cantuário,Fernando S de; Salomão,Leandro C; Oliveira,Roberta C de; Luz,José Magno Q.
ABSTRACT Water stress compromises plant growth. Resistance inducers, such as potassium silicate (K2SiO3), can reduce negative effects of this stress on Solanaceae, Capsicum annuum. Plant height, stem diameter and leaf area may indicate the efficiency of potassium silicate foliarsprayagainst water stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of sweet pepper plants under water stress and K2SiO3 doses. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme in space. The treatments consisted of four soil water stresses: 15 kPa (field capacity), 25 (intermediate value), 35 and 45 kPa (water stress) and three doses of potassium silicate (0, 0.4 and 0.8 L 100 L-1 water), acting as resistance inducers to water stress. The resistance...

Production, quality and water use efficiency of processing tomato as affected by the final irrigation timing Horticultura Brasileira
Marouelli,Waldir A.; Silva,Washington L.C.; Moretti,Celso L..
A field study was conducted under "Cerrado" conditions of Brazil, during the dry season of 2000, to evaluate the effect of final irrigation timing on fruit yield, quality, and the use of water in processing tomatoes. Fourteen irrigation cut-off times were employed, 7 days apart, from blossom until harvest. Maximum marketable fruit yield took place when irrigations were cut-off 21 days before harvest (10% of red fruit). Total soluble solids content was linearly reduced at the rate of 0.34 ºBrix per each additional 10 days period of irrigation. Maximum pulp yield was obtained ending irrigation 34 days before harvest (20% of plants holding at least one red fruit). The highest tomato water use efficiency was observed when the last irrigation occurred between...

WATER REQUIREMENTS AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY OF CARROT UNDER DRIP IRRIGATION IN A HAPLOXERAND SOIL J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Quezada,C; Fischer,S; Campos,J; Ardiles,D.
Water management efficiency is a key issue for sustainable agriculture development, since it is necessary to get a higher biomass production per unit of applied water. This study aimed to determine both water requirements and water use efficiency (WUE) and their effect on yield and quality parameters in carrots (Daucus carota L.), during the 2006 - 2007 growing season in Chilian, Chile (36° 35' 43.2" S, 72° 04' 39" W, 140 m altitude). The water treatments applied were 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 % pan evaporation (Epan) in a Haploxerand soil under drip irrigation. The results showed that the highest crop yield was obtained with 100% Epan treatment. However, the highest WUE was found in the 75% Epan treatment equivalent to 3864 m³ ha-1, which is the recommended...

EFFECTIVENESS OF THE APPLICATION OF ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZA FUNGI AND ORGANIC AMENDMENTS TO IMPROVE SOIL QUALITY AND PLANT PERFORMANCE UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Medina,Almudena; Azcón,Rosario.
Plant growth is limited in arid and/or contaminated sites due to the adverse conditions coming from heavy metal (HM) contamination and/or water stress. Moreover, soils from these areas are generally characterised by poor soil structure, low water-holding capacity, lack of organic matter and nutrient deficiency. In order to carry out a successful re-afforestation, it is necessary to improve soil quality and the ability of plants species to resist this harsh environment. The symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi has been proposed as one of the mechanisms of plant heavy metal tolerance and water stress avoidance. On the other hand, addition of organic amendments to the soil can reverse degradation of soil properties. Agro-waste residues such as dry...

Germination of grasses and shrubs under various water stress and temperature conditions: (With 4 Figures & 2 Tables) Phyton
Bonvissuto,GL; Busso,CA.
The effects of various temperature combinations and water potentials were determined on the germination of Atriplex lampa Gill. ex Moquin, Larrea divaricata Cav., Leymus erianthus (Phil.) Dubcovsky, Stipa neaei Nees ex Steudel and Poa ligularis Nees ap. Steudel under controlled conditions. The tested hypothesis was that seed germination increases with increasing temperatures and water potentials in A. lampa, L. divaricata, L. erianthus, S. neaei and P. ligularis, and that time to reach 50% of total germination is greater at lower than higher water potentials. PEG 2000 was used to impose water stress conditions. In general, obtained results conducted to accept the posted hyphotesis.

Biomass production and grain yield of three sorghum lines difering in drought resistance Phyton
Castro-Nava,S; Ortiz-Cereceres,J; Mendoza-Castillo,M del C; Huerta,AJ.
The aim of this study was to determine the eficiency of drought classification criteria that we previously reported for our grain sorghum genotypes. Two tolerant genotypes of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] (UAT-124 and UAT-152) and one susceptible (UAT-30) were subjected to drought under greenhouse conditions at either panicle initiation, flag leaf, or flowering. Results showed that the effects of drought depended on when drought stress occurred during development. Biomass of the three sorghum genotypes was significantly reduced at the flag leaf stage (48%) by drought stress, but the greatest reduction occurred in the susceptible genotype UAT-30 (71%). Results showed that biomass accumulation for UAT-124 and UAT-30 was...
