Senecio jacobaea is a poisonous weed in grasslands of various countries (e.g. Great Britain, New Zealand, Central European states), and the further spread of the species into farmland must be prevented. Due to strong restrictions of curative measures, the prevention of S. jacobaea’s spread is of primary importance for organic farming. To assess the influence of management practice and site conditions on the occurrence of S. jacobaea, we conducted an on-farm survey in the northern and central part of Switzerland. Botanical assessments were carried out on grassland plots with S. jacobaea occurrence and on neighbour plots without S. jacobaea. For these plots, we analysed the soil nutrients and the details of management practice such as type and intensity of... |

For each year that ploughing of a pasture is postponed, organic mat-ter in the soil can build up to 1000 kg N per hectare. Thus, the dock-cutter leads to a build-up of organic matter in the soil and effective termination of docks without ploughing. Practical recommendation • The mounting of the dock-cutter needs to be adjusted in order to fit a mini-loader or a front-loader on a tractor. In Denmark, mini-loaders are already present on many farms. • The docks are drilled by placing the drill on top of a dock and then using the oil pressure of the loader to turn on the cutter and terminate the dock. The cutter drills about 20 cm into the soil, which is enough to destroy the point of growth and thus prevent regrowth. • The dock-cutter automatically... |

In... |

Eastern purple coneflower [Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench.] is globally recognized as one of the most popular medicinal herbs. In the present study, the effects of incorporation of the plant residues of this medicinal plant on weed flora and early growth of a sunflower crop were investigated. A field and a pot experiment were conducted at the Agricultural University of Athens. The field experiment was conducted under organic conditions, while in the pot experiment the focus was on the early growth of sunflower plants under the effect of plant residues. The results showed that there was a significant effect of plant residues on weed flora and the producted biomass, especially during the first crucial growth stages of sunflower. Particularly, the... |

Individual plant care in agriculture will lead to new opportunities in crop management. Not only the weeding operation is in focus here but it will be more in general for individual chemical or physical treatments of individual weed or crop plants. For the application of fertilizers and chemicals in small dose rates and accurately targeted advanced sensor information e.g. based on spectral responses can be used to consider the individual plant needs ('the speaking plant'). This will have a significant effect on the reduction of inputs and increase the general efficiency rates of agricultural means. The objective of this project was to provide high accuracy seed position mapping of a field of sugar beet to allow subsequent physical weeding as inter- and... |
