The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a... |

The interpretation of high-resolution 2D marine seismic profiles together with the analysis of sea-bottom cores allowed a stratigraphic and structural framework of the Provence continental shelf to be proposed. The integration of onshore and offshore stratigraphy, structure and geomorphology provided new insights into Messinian paleotopography and paleohydrography. A geological map of the offshore Provence continental shelf, isobath map of the base Plio-Quaternary surface are presented for the first time in this area. The base Plio-Quaternary surface is a polyphased unconformity that is composed of deep canyons developed by fluvial erosion during the Messinian event, and wave-cut surfaces formed during post-Messinian transgressions. The study evidenced a... |

Many studies in marine coastal lagoons have focused on the marine-to-terrestrial gradient as a main source of variation for the structure of assemblages. In this paper, the magnitude of differences among locations arranged along the marine-to-terrestrial gradient of the western lagoon of Orbetello (Grosseto, Italy) was contrasted with the amount of spatial variability occurring among sets of locations that were not positioned along this axis. We propose that if the most important processes influencing assemblages were those associated with the external-internal gradient of the lagoon, as usually supposed, then assemblages should differ more among these locations than among any other locations. To test the above proposition, four locations arranged along... |

The BourcartHérault canyon interfluve in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) was the site of very high sedimentation (up to 2.5 m/kyr) around the Last Glacial Maximum, due to the vicinity of major fluvial systems that fed the shelf edge. Shoreface deposits and offshore muds deposited during each glacial/interglacial 100 kyr-cycle, created a repeated motif with high-angle and low-angle clinoforms on seismic profiles. New detailed morphological, sedimentological and paleo-environmental data, constrained by 14C dating, allow us to propose a scenario for the evolution of this critical area between 46 and 15 cal. kyr BP. The major seismic sequence (S5), formed as a forced regression during the overall sea-level fall between MIS-3 and MIS-2, can be sub-divided... |

The wide continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion (up to 70 km) has been the object of numerous investigations since the early days of oceanography. Yet, the question of sequences duration, the mechanisms of deposition and factors implied remained unanswered. A study of a very dense grid of Very High Resolution (VHR) seismic reflection (Sparker) data associated with surficial cores both, collected by IFREMER between 1992 and 2001 on the outer shelf and upper slope offshore of Sète in the Languedoc region gives a new insight into these issues. Analysis of the 3D geometry of the sedimentary record reveals a basic depositional pattern consisting of a pair of horizontally juxtaposed and downlapping prisms. Prism PI with low angle clinoforms (<1°) lies on the... |

Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of... |

The Mediterranean Sea is often referred as a “pocket ocean” exhibiting many processes that are primary interest the global ocean circulation given the opportunity to investigate a large panel of oceanic features in a relatively restrained area. Recent field experiments based on the multi-plateform integrated monitoring MOOSE or on intensive targeted experiment HYMEX revisited the hydrology and the dynamics of the Western Basin. Such approaches emphasized the ubiquity of the fine scale dynamics in the Mediterranean dynamics. An overview of the observed processes during 5 recent fields experiments are presented and discussed regarding meso- and submeso-scale processes. |

The north Ligurian margin is a complex geological area in many ways. It has witnessed several phases of highly contrasting deformation styles, at both crustal scale and that of shallower cover tectonics, simultaneously or in quick succession, and with significant spatial variability. This complex interplay is mirrored in the resulting intricate structures that make it hard to identify active faults responsible for both, the significant seismicity observed, and the tectonic inversion undergone by the margin, identified at longer time scales on morphostructural grounds. We present here the first preliminary results of the leg 1 of SEFASILS cruise, conducted in 2018 offshore Monaco, in an effort to answer these questions by means of modern deep seismic... |

In active basins, tectonics can segment the continental shelf and control its stratigraphic architecture and physiography. Segmentation can explain the local evolution and morphology of the continental shelf because of sea-level variations, local tectonic segmentation and hydrodynamic processes. Here we investigate the tectonically active Morocco continental margin (southern Alboran Sea) using high-resolution seismic profiles and multibeam bathymetric data. The active faults bounding the transtensive Nekor basin triggered the segmentation of the shelf into three sectors showing different subsidence rates: a western sector corresponding to an extensive fault relay, a central sector corresponding to the subsiding Al-Hoceima Bay and an eastern sector... |

The RADMED project is devoted to the implementation and maintenance of a multidisciplinary monitoring system around the Spanish Mediterranean waters. This observing system is based on periodic multidisciplinary cruises covering the coastal waters, continental shelf and slope waters and some deep stations (>2000 m) from the Westernmost Alboran Sea to Barcelona in the Catalan Sea, including the Balearic Islands. This project was launched in 2007 unifying and extending some previous monitoring projects which had a more reduced geographical coverage. Some of the time series currently available extend from 1992, while the more recent ones were initiated in 2007. The present work updates the available time series up to 2015 (included) and shows the capability... |

The Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) is a SW-NE oriented passive continental margin formed since the Oligocene. It presents small to large scale mass movement features suggesting a long history of seafloor instability. Of particular interest are the two surficial large mass-transport deposits along the Rhone turbiditic levee, known as the Rhone Eastern and Western Mass-Transport Deposits (REMTD and RWMTD). With the help of the recently acquired multi-beam bathymetric, sub-bottom profiler, high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, we investigate the morphology, timing, kinematics, and possible triggering mechanisms of the source area of the REMTD, which we refer to as the Eastern Rhone Interfluve Slide (ERIS). ERIS has an estimated run-out... |

Spatio-temporally stable prey distributions coupled with individual foraging site fidelity are predicted to favour individual resource specialisation. Conversely, predators coping with dynamic prey distributions should diversify their individual diet and/or shift foraging areas to increase net intake. We studied individual specialisation in Scopoli’s shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) from the highly dynamic Western Mediterranean, using daily prey distributions together with resource selection, site fidelity and trophic-level analyses. As hypothesised, we found dietary diversification, low foraging site fidelity and almost no individual specialisation in resource selection. Crucially, shearwaters switched daily foraging tactics, selecting areas with... |

The limited availability of high-resolution continuous archives, insufficient chronological control, and complex hydro-climatic forcing mechanisms lead to many uncertainties in palaeo-hydrological reconstructions for the Western Mediterranean. In this study we present a newly recovered 19.63 m long core from Lake Sidi Ali in the North African Middle Atlas, a transition zone of Atlantic, Western Mediterranean and Saharan air mass trajectories. With a multi-proxy approach based on magnetic susceptibility, carbonate and total organic C content: core-scanning and quantitative XRF, stable isotopes of ostracod shells, charcoal counts, Cedrus pollen abundance, and a first set of diatom data, we reconstruct Western Mediterranean hydro-climatic variability,... |

Microbiological and biogeochemical studies were carried out in sediments and near bottom waters in the upwelling area off the Malaga coast and in the Almeria-Oran frontal zone. In these nutrient-rich conditions, metabolic activity is potentially limited by oxygen availability through the sediment depth. In the surficial sediments of the frontal zone, however, oxygen penetrated to a depth of 4 cm, allowing oxic mineralisation processes to occur throughout the layer. In the surficial sediments of the upwelling area, oxygen penetration was limited to the top 2.5 cm, leading to anoxic conditions. Glutamate respiration and global oxygen uptake rates were clearly higher than in the frontal zone. In the superficial sediments of the frontal zone, bacteria were... |

The Balearic basin is a semi-enclosed basin located in the western Mediterranean Sea, connecting the Gulf of Lions and the Alboran basin. While the characteristics and circulation of the water masses have been rather well established, the exchanges with adjacent basins, essential to our understanding of the circulation in the western Mediterranean and for validating outputs of general circulation models, have never been determined in detail. We present here the data from the FE-89 (June 1989) Spanish cruise, during which high-resolution CTD and ADCP measurements were performed on the open boundaries of the Balearic basin. The fluxes for all the boundaries were calculated in a quasi-synoptic fashion. The values found in the Ibiza and Mallorca channels... |
