Degenerative progressive hereditary mieloencefalopathy (Weaver Syndrome) in Gir calves Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Pedro Carlos Lucas de; Coelho,Humberto Eustáquio; Medeiros,Alessandra Aparecida de; Rieck,Susana Elisa; Souza,Juliana Meirelles de; Alvarenga,Rodrigo Rodrigues.
Degenerative progressive hereditary mieloencefalopathy is a disease described in young Brown Swiss cattle. In these animals the disease occurs in calves between six months and two years old showing mainly neurological signs. Two Zebu Gir calves were examined at the Veterinary Hospital of Uberaba, both with balance deficits. The neurological examination has shown that they were mentally alert, with appropriate conscience, head tremor, normal sensitive reflexes, normal sensitivity for superficial and deep pain, motor deficit of the pelvic limbs with severe ataxia. The calves were sacrificed. Based on the clinical case and necroscopic and histopathological findings, it could be suggested that the neuropathy, which affected both animals described above, is...

Souza,Luciana Aparecida de; Lopes,Samara de Paula; Daoualibi,Yasmin; Mósena,Ana Cristina Sbaraini; Gonçalo,Vinícius Vasconcellos da Cruz; Veiga,Cristiano Chaves Pessoa da; Spíndola,Bruno Ferreira; Silva,Wanessa Pereira da; Ubiali,Daniel Guimarães; Caldas,Saulo Andrade.
ABSTRACT: Congenital malformations are functional and structural changes in organ systems, tissues, or organs that may develop during the embryonic or fetal phase. Spinal cord malformations, such as segmental hypoplasia of the spinal cord (SHSC) and syringomyelia, are rare in bovines. A Girolando calf from Valença, Rio de Janeiro, was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro because of motor incoordination. Clinical evaluation revealed a 5-cm depression area in the spine at the dorsal line of the thoracic region. Neurological examination revealed reduced proprioception, pelvic limb extension with increased nociceptive activity, and reduced anal reflex. In radiographic examination, the body of the T11 vertebra had...

Clinical and virological characteristics of calves experimentally infected with a Brazilian isolate of bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1a Ciência Rural
Quadros,Luana Marchi; Jardim,José Conrado dos Santos; Merchioratto,Ingryd; Brum,Mário Celso Sperotto.
ABSTRACT: To study the pathogenicity of the Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1a 241.10 isolate, four calves were intranasally inoculated with a viral suspension containing 107.2 TCID50 mL-1. One calf was left uninoculated and kept in contact with the other calves to investigate viral transmissibility. After inoculation, the animals were monitored daily for clinical signs of infection. The presence of the virus in the blood and nasal secretions was confirmed by virus isolation in cell culture. White blood cells were quantified prior to and every 3 days after infection, and the presence of antibodies was checked every 7 days, starting at day 0 until day 42 post-inoculation (pi). After infection, nasal and ocular serous secretions were...

Control of bovine gastrointestinal nematode parasites using pellets of the nematode-trapping fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium Ciência Rural
Araújo,Jackson Victor de; Guimarães,Marcos Pezzi; Campos,Artur Kanadani; Sá,Nilo Chaves de; Sarti,Priscilla; Assis,Rafaela Carolina Lopes.
The viability of a formulation of the fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium associated with ivermectin was evaluated for the biological control of bovine gastrointestinal nematode parasites. Four groups of five calves each were placed in pastures with a stocking rate of 1.6 animal/hectare. In group 1 (control), the calves did not receive any treatment. In group 2, each animal received 20g of pellets of M. thaumasium orally twice a week during a six-month period that began with the onset of the rainy season (October 23, 2000). In group 3, each animal received 20g of pellets of M. thaumasium orally twice a week during the same period as 2, as well as two strategic treatments with ivermectin (200 mcg/kg) on May 10, 2001 and July 5, 2001. In group 4, the animals...

Vacuum-cooled liquid nitrogen increases the developmental ability of vitrified-warmed bovine oocytes Ciência Rural
Santos,Rodrigo Marques dos; Barreta,Marcos Henrique; Frajblat,Marcel; Cucco,Diego Córdova; Mezzalira,Joana Claudia; Bunn,Silvério; Cruz,Fabiano Buss; Vieira,Arnaldo Diniz; Mezzalira,Alceu.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of vacuum-cooled liquid nitrogen on the development of vitrified immature (germinal vesicle stage; GV) and mature (metaphase II; MII) bovine oocytes after re-warming. Liquid nitrogen was exposed to either atmospheric pressure or to a vacuum (300mm Hg for 45sec); the latter decreased the temperature of the liquid nitrogen to -200°C. Partially denuded oocytes were vitrified either just after selection (GV) or after 22 hours of in vitro maturation (MII) in TCM 199 medium + 10% of estrous mare serum. For vitrification, oocytes were firstly exposed to an intermediate solution (10% EG + 10% DMSO) for 30sec, followed by the vitrification solution (20% EG + 20% DMSO + 0.5M sucrose) for 20sec. Groups of three...

Comparison between three techniques for videosinuscopy in cattle Ciência Rural
Basso,Fernando Zanlorenzi; Busato,Eduarda Maciel; Silva,Jéssica Rodrigues da; Guedes,Rogério Luizari; Barros Filho,Ivan Roque de; Dornbusch,Peterson Triches.
ABSTRACT: Cattle have extensive paranasal sinuses that are susceptible to disease, most commonly sinusitis. The sinuscopy can be used to evaluate these structures, although there are no descriptions of this region for endoscopic anatomy, especially regarding the trocar position and the most appropriate type of endoscope. This study aimed to standardize the surgical approaches to sinuscopy in cattle by comparing the use of three endoscopes. Four accesses by trephination (one hole for each of the maxillary and frontal sinuses) were made in eight heads of slaughtered cattle. Each hole was inspected with three endoscopes: a 10mm flexible colonoscope with up to 180º of angulation, a 10mm 0° laparoscope and a 4mm 30º arthroscope. It was observed that all regions...

Deforming mandibular osteomyelitis in a cow caused by Trueperella pyogenes Ciência Rural
Caffaro,Karen Antas; Hussni,Carlos Alberto; Risseti,Rafaela Mastrangelo; França,Daniel Queiroz; Franco,Marília Masello Junqueira; Machado,Vânia Maria de Vasconcelos; Belotta,Alexandra Frey; Paes,Antonio Carlos; Lara,Gustavo Henrique Batista; Morais,Amanda Bonalume Cordeiro de; Listoni,Fernando José Paganini; Ribeiro,Marcio Garcia.
This study reports an unusual case of deforming mandibular osteomyelitis in a cow caused by Trueperella (Arcanobacterium) pyogenes, on the face of the ventrolateral caudal portion of the right branch of the mandible. Fragment aspired of lesion by fine needle allowed cytological characterization, isolation and identification of T. pyogenes. Radiographic examination showed marked periosteal reaction in the right mandible, numerous lytic areas and cortical bone destruction. Despite of treatment based on in vitro antimicrobial sensitivity test, it was recommended the euthanasia due to progressive worsening of the cow's condition. Multiple abscesses were observed in the mandibular region at necropsy. Pyogranuloma was characterized in histological exam. Sampled...

Absorption and metabolism of volatile fatty acids by rumen and omasum Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Daniel,João Luiz Pratti; Resende Júnior,João Chrysostomo de.
Volatile fatty acids (VFA) absorption and metabolic capacity of rumen and omasum were compared, in vitro. Fragments of rumen wall and omasum laminae were taken from eight adult crossbred bovines. An isolated fragment of the mucosa was fitted in a tissue diffusion chamber. Valeric acid and CrEDTA were added to ruminal fluid and placed on the mucosal side and buffer solution was placed on the serosal side. Fractional absorption rates were measured by exponential VFA:Cr ratio decay over time. Metabolism rate was determined as the difference between VFA absorbed and VFA which appeared on the serosal side over time. Mitotic index was higher in omasum (0.52%) than in rumen epithelium (0.28%). VFA fractional absorption rate was higher in omasum (4.6%/h.cm²) than...

FACTORS AFFECTING PREGNANCY RATES AFTER OVUM PICK UP-DERIVED EMBRYO TRANSFER IN LACTATING HOLSTEIN RECIPIENTS UNDER TROPICAL CONDITIONS Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pinto,Tássia Louregiani Carvalho; Nogueira,Marina Bottrel Reis; Sales,José Nélio de Sousa; Carvalho,Rafaela Rodrigues de; Cushman,Robert Andrew; Souza,José Camisão de.
ABSTRACTHigh milk production, heat, physiological status and management impair reproduction in Holstein cows. The use of in vivo-produced embryos has been reported as an alternative to enhance pregnancy outcome in the tropics; however there are several limitations for its production, especially from variations in superovulatory responses. The in vitro production of embryos would avoid such variations, but few studies have been reported. This study aims to verify the effects of variables related to recipients under a program of routine in vitro embryo transfer on a commercial dairy farm in southeastern Brazil. It was hypothesized that pregnancy rates after transfer of ovum pick up or OPUderived embryos (ET) to lactating Holstein recipients may be influenced...
