Flavour and firmness are important quality criteria for tomatoes [1]. Tomato flavour is mainly attributed to the content of sugar and acid and volatile compounds. Many factors determine tomato flavour e.g. cultivar, growing system, maturity, harvest time and post-harvest treatments [1, 2]. In Denmark, organic tomatoes are grown directly in the soil. It is difficult, however, to provide enough organic manure, to prevent leaching out of nutrients and to control soil-born diseases in a soil system. Recently, Sørensen and Thorup-Kristensen [3] reported results on two alternative systems in which plants were grown in compost and nutrients and water was re-circulated. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of growing system (open, confined and... |

In the early 1940’s, Lady Eve Balfour concluded in her book ‘The Living Soil’ that: “The health of soil, plant, animal and man is one and indivisible” (Balfour, 1943). With this key statement she set one of the founding stones for the principles of the organic agriculture movement, later laid down by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM, 2005). It describes the connection of health between soils, plants, animals and humans, and implies that the promotion and maintenance of human health, as one of the highest goals of mankind, critically depends on the health in all other agricultural domains. However, current debates about the meaning and measurement of health are largely disconnected: soil science, plant pathology,... |

This study was undertaken to characterize the essential oil (EO) of Artemisia arborescens growing wild in Sicily. EO, extracted by steam distillation, was examined for its chemical composition and for its capability to inhibit some food-borne pathogen bacteria. A total of 43 compounds (13 monoterpene hydrocarbons, 14 oxygenated monoterpenes, 10 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, three oxygenated sesquiterpenes and less amount of other three compounds), which account 93.73% of the total oil, were identified by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Oxygenated monoterpenes (57.32%) constituted the main fraction, with β-thujone as the main compound (45.04%), followed by the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon chamazulene (22.71%). Undiluted EO showed a... |

Background/Aims Persistent incidents of food fraud in China have resulted in low levels of consumer trust in the authenticity and safety of food that is domestically produced. We examined the relationship between the concerns of Chinese consumers regarding food fraud, and the role that demonstrating authenticity may play in relieving those concerns. Methods A two-stage mixed method design research design was adopted. First, qualitative research (focus groups n = 7) was conducted in three Chinese cities, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu to explore concerns held by Chinese consumers in relation to food fraud. A subsequent quantitative survey (n = 850) tested hypotheses derived from the qualitative research and theoretical literature regarding the... |

a framework for estimating the scientific impact of these studies. Furthermore, the problems connected with the different research approaches are being discussed. A number of comparative studies showed lower nitrate contents and less pesticide residues, but usually higher levels of vitamin C and phenolic compounds in organic plant products, as well as higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid in milk from organically raised animals. However, the variation in outcomes of comparative studies is very high, depending on plant fertilization, ripening stage and plant age at harvest, and weather conditions. Moreover, there appeared no simple relationship between nutritional value and health effects. It is difficult therefore to draw... |

In the European funded research project FOODLINKS an analysis of 19 cases of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) was carried out. A special focus was on their contribution to health and sustainability, also with a focus on organic supply chains. These potential contributions were identified (based on case analysis and literature): Health & wellbeing: increased consumer knowledge, possibly leading to healthier diets, but not always fully reached. Environmental: minimised use of resources such as fossil fuel or packaging, and/or use of less polluting methods of production (e.g. organic farming); significant variation between SFSCs. Social: better ensuring fairness and trust in many SFSCs; more social inclusion of people; potential to revitalise local... |

Quality traits are highly focused upon in the marketing of organic food products. There is a need to define and measure quality as consumers seem to have preconceived notions about the superior health value and taste of organic compared to non-organic products. A commonly held opinion among many consumer groups is that organic farming guarantees optimum quality, despite the fact that this remains unproven. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of quality traits in a plant-based food product, using carrots as an example. Selected designated quality aspects are presented to describe the complexity of quality and discuss the challenges of using these aspects in differentiating between organic and conventional... |

In recent years, the organic sector has put significant efforts in the development of clear definitions for gentle and quality oriented processing of plant based foodstuffs to supplement existing regulations. Concrete quality standards for different types of processing are under development in several CoreOrganic Plus projects. However, there is still a significant need for development of a Code of Practice. Quality of a product and sustainability of production depend on the cumulative impacts of each processing step in the food chain, as well as the quality of the raw material. With increasing demands by the consumers who expect high quality foods produced sustainably and preferably regionally (SusOrganic consumer survey), pressure on the producers is... |
