Effects of conventionally bred and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize varieties on soil microbial biomass and activity Organic Eprints
Fliessbach, Andreas; Messmer, Monika; Nietlispach, Bruno; Infante, Valentina; Mäder, Paul.
Abstract Genetically modified (GM) maize containing genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was cultivated on 29% of the total maize production area worldwide in 2009. Most studies to date compare Bt-maize varieties with their near isogenic lines; however, there is little information on the variability of conventional maize breeding lines and how the effects of Bt varieties are ranked within. In our study on the potential risks of Bt-maize varieties, we analyzed tissue quality and compared the effects of ten conventional and GM maize varieties on soil microbiological properties in a replicated climate chamber experiment. All maize varieties were cultivated twice in the same soil microcosm. Shoot yields and soluble C in leaf tissue of Bt...

Tomatensorten für die Direktvermarktung Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin; Vieweger, Anja.

The increasing demand of organically produced lettuce can only be met by enlarging the assortment and stabilizing the yield. Cultivating lettuce of a high quality safely requires varieties with improved stress tolerance, a well-developed ability to utilize nutrients, a low demand of water, as well as a high resistance to pathogens, particularly to downy mildew. Planting mixtures might be seen as an alternative method to present pure varieties. The results of four-year studies in the field in three locations showed that line mixtures reacted in a far more stable way to stress factors than pure varieties. The diversity in cultures is promoted by mixing so that the variation of resistance can be exploited to control diseases. Total losses caused by Bremia...

Ertrag und Qualität von Winterweizengenotypen unter integrierten und ökologischen Anbaubedingungen Organic Eprints
Leithold, Dr. B.; Weber, Prof. Dr. W.E.; Schulz, F.; Leithold, Prof. Dr. G..
An annually identical assortment of each of 32 winter wheat varieties and lines bred under conventional conditions was tested between 2004 and 2007 both in a conventionally and in an organically managed environment. Previously the assortment had been evaluated with respect to yield and indirect parameters of baking quality. The objective was to obtain evidence for a targeted selection of lines for their later use as bread varieties in organic farming. It was discovered that for a successful selection of lines for the subsequent cultivation under organic conditions especially the evaluation of yield must be conducted strictly under the same conditions.

A user-friendly database for Participatory Plant Breeding programs Organic Eprints
Rosenfeld, Simon; Parzies, Heiko; Grando, Stefania; Ceccarelli, Salvatore.
In a decentralized and participatory plant breeding (PPB) program, in contrast to conventional plant breeding, farmers select from a large number of genotypes over a number of cycles in several locations. As selection is for location-specific adaptation a PPB program based on, for example, four stages of selection, generates large, unbalanced data sets. With common spreadsheet software it is not possible, or it is at least very cumbersome to extract all the information, particularly the one that is related to genotype x environment (GE) interactions. Therefore, there is a need for an information system that makes it as easy as possible to retrieve and compare data over all given factors in the PPB-program. Due to a lack of education and financial resources...

Verbesserung der Stickstoff(N)-Effizienz im Ökologischen Landbau - Bedeutung der N-Aufnahme- und N-Verwertungseffizienz bei Triticale, Weizen und Roggen Organic Eprints
Thiemt, Elisabeth M..
Organic farming systems are characterized by reduced nitrogen supply. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important yield limiting factors and an essential component for proteins. For organic farming cereal varieties with high N use efficiency are required. The main components of N use efficiency are N uptake and N utilization efficiency. Triticale has shown to be very suitable for organic farming due to its tolerance to marginal conditions and high competition against weeds. Little is known about N use efficiency and its components in triticale. The aims of the study were to i) analyze the influence of N uptake and N utilization efficiency for improved N efficiency, ii) estimate quantitative genetic parameters for N uptake and N utilization efficiency, and...

Quantitative Population Epigenetics a Catalyst for Sustainable Agriculture Organic Eprints
Stauss, R..
Ecological intensification of agricultural practices can be a minimum input agriculture with a maximum utilization of the epigenetic potential for a maximum output. The application of Quantitative Population Epigenetics as a catalyst for sustainable agriculture offers earning opportunities (market segments or business cases) for the existing players in the high-input agriculture in terms of win-win. For example, agriculture is a major factor in eutrophication of surface waters. By using epigenetically active compounds to switch on yield or stress genes, new crop varieties for low-input agriculture could be developed to improve nitrogen and water use efficiency for cereal production significantly.

Differences in the Morphological Characteristics of the Land Races of the Soft and Emmer Wheat in Relation to the Modern Varieties Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan; Sramek, J.; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
For the organic farmers there is important question which varieties of wheat are right for organic farming in Less Favoured Areas. Modern varieties of wheat are bred in the conditions of conventional (high imput) farming. That is why the organic farmers asked about the suitability of land races of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or different species like emmer wheat grown in the past (Triticum dicoccum SCHUEBL). The paper results from the study of fourty land races, two intermediate and ten modern varieties of soft wheat in comparison to ten land races of emmer wheat at two locations in the Czech Republic. We evaluated tuft shape, length of plant, length and width of flag leaf, length and density of spike and awnedness. The modern varieties of soft...

Genotype x Environment Interactions of Winter Wheat Organic Eprints
Hildermann, Isabell; Messmer, Monika; Kunz, Peter; Pregitzer, Anjana; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Mäder, Paul.
Winter wheat cultivars for organic farming have to be adapted to highly variable environments. Yield and yield stability, the nutritional value and the bread making quality are here of major importance. Particularly, seed quality, tillering capacity, regeneration ability after harrowing, weed suppression ability, resistance or tolerance against diseases and improved nutrient use efficiency (NUE) under limited nutrient conditions need to be improved by specific breeding efforts (Kunz et al., 2006; Löschenberger et al., 2008). Ten winter wheat cultivars were grown in 2007 in two organic systems of the DOK long-term experiment in CH-Therwil. Eight of these cultivars were tested in 2008 at three organic farms in different pedo-climatic environments in...
