Development of organic vegetable varieties was done through participatory breeding in Regions 4A, 4B, 8 and 12 in the Philippines. Farmer co-operators were trained and seeds of segregating lines and populations which served as their starting materials were provided to them. The materials were evaluated in their respective farms along with continuous selection and seed production. Co-operators were able to select lines of various vegetable crops and seed produce them. |

In a decentralized and participatory plant breeding (PPB) program, in contrast to conventional plant breeding, farmers select from a large number of genotypes over a number of cycles in several locations. As selection is for location-specific adaptation a PPB program based on, for example, four stages of selection, generates large, unbalanced data sets. With common spreadsheet software it is not possible, or it is at least very cumbersome to extract all the information, particularly the one that is related to genotype x environment (GE) interactions. Therefore, there is a need for an information system that makes it as easy as possible to retrieve and compare data over all given factors in the PPB-program. Due to a lack of education and financial resources... |

Organic farming systems are characterized by reduced nitrogen supply. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important yield limiting factors and an essential component for proteins. For organic farming cereal varieties with high N use efficiency are required. The main components of N use efficiency are N uptake and N utilization efficiency. Triticale has shown to be very suitable for organic farming due to its tolerance to marginal conditions and high competition against weeds. Little is known about N use efficiency and its components in triticale. The aims of the study were to i) analyze the influence of N uptake and N utilization efficiency for improved N efficiency, ii) estimate quantitative genetic parameters for N uptake and N utilization efficiency, and... |

- General high interest of farmers to participate in on-station and on-farm testing of cotton varietal lines and hybrids - On-station mother trials are managed by the researchers, while on-farm baby trials are managed by the farmer - A network of interested farmers need to be established, who are regularly trained in on-farm research and supported by extension agents - Farmers, researchers and extension agents together monitor the on-station and on-farm trials and evaluate cotton varieties and hybrids - However, the extension agents and farmers need to be introduced into plant breeding by the researcher to support and profit from decentralized participatory breeding efforts - Farmers are highly motivated to find new genotypes as they are in great need... |

Ecological intensification of agricultural practices can be a minimum input agriculture with a maximum utilization of the epigenetic potential for a maximum output. The application of Quantitative Population Epigenetics as a catalyst for sustainable agriculture offers earning opportunities (market segments or business cases) for the existing players in the high-input agriculture in terms of win-win. For example, agriculture is a major factor in eutrophication of surface waters. By using epigenetically active compounds to switch on yield or stress genes, new crop varieties for low-input agriculture could be developed to improve nitrogen and water use efficiency for cereal production significantly. |

For the organic farmers there is important question which varieties of wheat are right for organic farming in Less Favoured Areas. Modern varieties of wheat are bred in the conditions of conventional (high imput) farming. That is why the organic farmers asked about the suitability of land races of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or different species like emmer wheat grown in the past (Triticum dicoccum SCHUEBL). The paper results from the study of fourty land races, two intermediate and ten modern varieties of soft wheat in comparison to ten land races of emmer wheat at two locations in the Czech Republic. We evaluated tuft shape, length of plant, length and width of flag leaf, length and density of spike and awnedness. The modern varieties of soft... |

Winter wheat cultivars for organic farming have to be adapted to highly variable environments. Yield and yield stability, the nutritional value and the bread making quality are here of major importance. Particularly, seed quality, tillering capacity, regeneration ability after harrowing, weed suppression ability, resistance or tolerance against diseases and improved nutrient use efficiency (NUE) under limited nutrient conditions need to be improved by specific breeding efforts (Kunz et al., 2006; Löschenberger et al., 2008). Ten winter wheat cultivars were grown in 2007 in two organic systems of the DOK long-term experiment in CH-Therwil. Eight of these cultivars were tested in 2008 at three organic farms in different pedo-climatic environments in... |
