Distribution, abundance and morphometry of Atlantoraja cyclophora (Regan, 1903) (Elasmobranchii: Rajidae) in southern Brazil, Southwestern Atlantic Neotropical Ichthyology
Oddone,María Cristina; Vooren,Carolus Maria.
A total of 459 individuals of Atlantoraja cyclophora were captured along the Rio Grande do Sul coast between latitudes 30º40'S and 34º30'S. Two surveys were performed, in the winter 2001 and in the summer/autumn 2002, using bottom-trawl between the depths of 100 and 600 m. This species occurred between 100 and 300 m deep, without significant differences in the frequency of occurrence and abundance (CPUE; kg/hour) between latitudes, depth and seasons. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 in all depths. In the study area, temperature ranged between 10.0 ºC and 17.6 ºC and salinity between 35.2 e 36.0 ppm. There was no correlation between CPUE and depth, temperature and salinity. Mean total length of females (53.2 cm) was significantly...

Variation in male reproductive system characters in Corydoradinae (Loricarioidei: Callichthyidae) reflects the occurrence of different lineages in this subfamily Neotropical Ichthyology
Spadella,Maria A.; Desan,Simone P.; Henriques,Teresa C. B. P. O.; Oliveira,Claudio.
ABSTRACT Callichthyidae comprises a well-corroborated monophyletic group divided into two subfamilies: Corydoradinae and Callichthyinae. A recent proposal, based on molecular data, suggests that Corydoradinae is composed by nine monophyletic lineages, possibly genera. The species pertaining to those lineages have extensive modification in the size of genome, including diploid, tetraploid and octoploid species. Considering the occurrence of these monophyletic lineages and that the variations in DNA content may imply in significant alterations on the structure of spermatozoa, this study analyzed the morphology of the male reproductive system and the morphometry of the head of the spermatozoa of representatives of the nine lineages of Corydoradinae, seeking...

A multi-approach analysis of the genetic diversity in populations of Astyanax aff. bimaculatus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei: Characidae) from Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pamponet,Vanessa de Carvalho Cayres; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Miranda,Viviam Souto; Silva Júnior,Juvenal Cordeiro; Oliveira,Claudine Gonçalves de; Gaiotto,Fernanda Amato.
Few reports are available about the ichthyofauna of typical semi-arid rivers, although the regional diversity has been constantly threatened by human activities, mainly related to impoundment and construction of dams. The goal of the present work was to evaluate using different methods, the population genetic structure of a characin fish, Astyanax aff. bimaculatus, widespread throughout hydrographic basins of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Morphological (meristic and morphometric data), cytogenetic (karyotype and Ag-NOR), and molecular (RAPD and SPAR) analyses were carried out in specimens collected upstream and downstream of Pedra Dam, in the main channel of Contas River (Contas River Basin), and in the Mineiro stream, which belongs to the adjacent Recôncavo...

Morphological diversity of fish along the rio das Velhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Junqueira,Nara Tadini; Leal,Cecília Gontijo; Alves,Carlos Bernardo Mascarenhas; Pompeu,Paulo Santos.
The rio das Velhas, located in central Minas Gerais State (Brazil), is a major tributary of the rio São Francisco. Despite several anthropogenic pressures, this basin supports more than 115 fish species. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological space occupied by fish assemblages in four regions (headwaters, upper, middle, and lower course) along the channel of the rio das Velhas. We try to answer the following question: Is there a change in the morphological organization of the fish along the longitudinal gradient of the river? Individuals from 67 species, collected at several sites in the basin from 1999 to 2008, were measured for 11 morphological attributes related to swimming behavior and habitat use. Through the graphs, the first two...

Cytogenetic and comparative morphology of two allopatric populations of Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000 (Teleostei: Characidae) from upper rio Paraná basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Domingues,Manoela de S.; Vicari,Marcelo R.; Abilhoa,Vinícius; Wamser,João P.; Cestari,Marta M.; Bertollo,Luiz A. C.; Almeida,Mara C. de; Artoni,Roberto F..
The recently described fish species, Astyanax altiparanae (tetra) is common in the upper rio Paraná basin, and has been reported in the Iguaçu basin. However, its natural origin in the rio Iguaçu is questionable. In the present work, karyotypical and morphological features of two populations of Astyanax altiparanae from the upper rio Tibagi and upper rio Iguaçu were compared. Both populations showed 2n=50 chromosomes and differences in their karyotype formula, NOR-bearing chromosomes and location of heterochromatin. Morphometric data from both populations were analyzed through free-size canonical variables. Cytogenetic and morphological results were mostly coincident showing exclusive markers that reflect their degree of populational isolation. In addition...

Assessing population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet Agonostomus monticola (Teleostei: Mugilidae) across its Middle American distribution Neotropical Ichthyology
Díaz-Murillo,Bertha P.; Ruiz-Campos,Gorgonio; Piller,Kyle R.; McMahan,Caleb D.; García-De-León,Francisco J.; Camarena-Rosales,Faustino.
ABSTRACT Population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet (Agonostomus monticola) was assessed in 419 adult specimens from 25 sample sites (river basins) across its Middle American distribution (Pacific and Atlantic-Caribbean drainages). This analysis was based on 36 standardized linear measurements and 19 landmarks on geometric morphometrics approach. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) revealed 19 linear morphological characters with significant variation among groups. Geometrically, the most notable changes were associated to the curvature of the frontal region of the head, the anterior and posterior insertion of the first dorsal and anal fins. The resulting grouping based on the DFA and geometric morphometrics techniques (Pacific-A,...

Early morphological variation and induction of phenotypic plasticity in Patagonian pejerrey Neotropical Ichthyology
Crichigno,Sonia A.; Battini,Miguel A.; Cussac,Víctor E..
The aim of this work was to study two aspects of phenotypic plasticity in the Patagonian pejerrey Odontesthes hatcheri (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) the dependence of the early morphology on developmental time and temperature, and the induction of morphological changes by controlled feeding in juveniles. Newly hatched free embryos, incubated at two different temperatures (13 and 18oC), and juveniles were used for the study and induction of phenotypic plasticity. Body and head shapes were analyzed with geometric morphometrics and linear measurements. Our results showed that shape variation at hatching was related to the bending of the embryo head on the yolk sac, increasing the head-trunk angle due to progressive straightening of the embryo. The head-trunk...

Trypanosoma evansi : A quantitative approach to the understanding of the morphometry-hematology relationship throughout experimental murine infections OAK
Tejero, F; Roschman-González, Antonio; Perrone Carmona, Trina Mercedes; Aso, P. M..
The morphometric characteristics of three Venezuelan isolates of Trypanosoma evansi, and the basic hematological features as well as host’s body weight were registered throughout experimental murine infections. The phenomena, trypomastigote morphometry dynamics, mouse hematological change and mice body variation, are related in statistical terms. In addition, the changeable morphometric characteristics of the hemoflagellate, and the host’s mutable hematological attributes, and the variable host’s body eight produced three different mathematical models generated by Multiple Linear Regressions that could explain the heterogeneous behavior of this eclectic parasite. Even more, supplementary mathematical models provided by Correspondence Analysis emphasize...

Morphological identification of two southwest Atlantic loliginid squids: Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Brunetti, N.E.; Jerez, B..
Morphological characters of two loliginid squids, Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis, in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina were studied to obtain a diagnostic criterion for their identification. Emphasis was placed on the taxonomic characters suitable to identify individuals in the whole size range. Considering the uncertainty associated to the correct identification of juveniles, their taxonomic status was confirmed using electrophoretic studies. Discrimination between species based on morphological characters proved to be more effective than meristic counts. A discriminant function that allows an easy separation of the two species is presented. The function, composed of two indices: fin width mantle length (FW/ML)and gladius width mantle length...

Sobre la denominación específica del surel del sector bonaerense (Pisces, Fam. Carangidae). OceanDocs
Pacheco Tack, R.; Cousseau, M.B..
The aim of this paper is to discuss the validity of the taxonomic status formerly assigned to the rough scad inhabiting shelf waters off Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Until recently the species had been considered, mainly by Argentine authors, as Trachurus picturatus australis, on the basis of a description by Nani (1950). Other authors, however, consider that the only valid species for the West Atlantic is Trachurus lathami. In general terms, there references are based on rather scarce material for this region. In this paper, we compare meristic and morphometric data from 160 specimens collected off Mar del Plata. Statistical analysis of the characteristics lead us to conclude that the valid scientific name of the Argentine rough scad is Trachurus...

Volpedo, A..
Otoliths (sagitta, asteriscus and lapillus)are complex structures composed of calcium carbonate, other minerals, and a protein matrix. Otoliths are located in the internal ear of the teleost fishes. The shape and structure of otoliths are specific for each species. For this reason, otoliths are used to identify species in biological and ecological studies.Sciaenids conform a group of fishes of commercial importance, so the handling of this resource is a high-priority topic for the local and national economies of countries that exploit these species. The purpose of this work is to study different aspects of the sagittae of marine sciaenids from Argentina and Peru. The morphology, morphometry and chemical composition has been analyzed in relation to the...

Características morfométricas y merísticas del bonito argentino OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E..
Collete and Chao (1975) reviewed the systematic and morphology of the Genus Sarda and relatives ((Tribe Sardini), including into their analysis a few S.sarda from the SW Atlantic. Before that, Demir (1964)dealt with the meristic data of the same species from the Black Sea. This paper in concerned with the featuring of the bonito caught in Argentina, from both a morphometric and a meristic point of view. The study made the differences reported by Collette and Chao (op.cit.)among W and E S.sarda populations to be more conspicuous, because our samples had even lower values han those from the NW.

Description of Illex argentinus beaks and rostral length relationships with size and weight of squids. OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L..
A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults, were analyzed for the latter purpose. The morphometric description was made on a total of 90 individuals from the Argentine Sea, taking the following measurements on each beak: rostral length, hood length, crest length, wing length and wing width. Results showed that Illex argentinus beaks present the general scheme of that corresponding to the Ommastrephidae...
