First report of Simuliidae and Chironomidae (Diptera) living on nymphs of Lachlania Hagen (Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae) in South America Biota Neotropica
Pepinelli,Mateus; Siqueira,Tadeu; Salles,Frederico Falcão; Shimbori,Eduardo Mitio.
We report cases of Simuliidae and Chironomidae living on Lachlania nymphs (Ephemeroptera). This is the first record of these associations in South America. Simulium exiguum (pupae and larvae), Simulium cuasiexiguum (larvae), Cricotopus sp. (larva) and Rheotanytarsus sp. (larva) were found associated with Lachlania nymphs. We believe that all of these associations can be classified as opportunistic (or casual) attachment.

Entomogen galls in a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest area in Sorocaba, Southeast of São Paulo State, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Ansaloni,Leticia Salvioni; Salmazo,Julia Rodrigues; Guimarães,Maria Virginia Urso.
Abstract: In this paper we studied the occurrence of insect galls and gall makers in a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest area in Sorocaba Municipality, Southeast of São Paulo State, Brazil. One hundred and thirteen morphotypes of galls on 54 species of host plants of 24 different families were found. The families of host plants richer in gall morphotypes were Fabaceae (N = 26) and Malpighiaceae (N = 19); the super host plants species were Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Fabaceae) (N = 16), Stigmaphyllon lalandianum (Aubl.) Marchand (Malpighiaceae) (N = 11), Protium heptaphyllum A. Juss. (Burseraceae) (N = 10), Serjania lethalis A.St.-Hil. (Sapindaceae) (N = 5). Most of the galls were found empty, but insects of the family Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) were responsible...

Historical relationships among areas of endemism in the tropical South America using Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA) Biota Neotropica
Sigrist,Mário Sérgio; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
Areas of endemism are the smallest units of biogeographical analysis. One of its definitions is that these areas harbor organisms with restricted distributions caused by non random historical factors. The aim of this study was to examine historical relationships among areas of endemism in the Neotropics using Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA). We applied BPA to 12 unrelated taxa distributed within two sets of endemic areas in order to: (1) compare the proposed endemic area classifications; (2) examine whether Amazonia and Atlantic Forest are true biogeographic units and, (3) examine whether the inclusion of open area formations influence area relationships of the surrounding forests. General area cladograms revealed a basal split between Amazonian and...

Diversity and distribution of mollusks along the Contas River in a tropical semiarid region (Caatinga), Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Kotzian,Carla Bender; Amaral,Aline Monique Blank do.
An inventory of macroinvertebrates conducted in the Contas River basin in Northeastern Brazil found 13 species of freshwater mollusks. Most of the community was represented by pulmonate gastropods, including Physa acuta, Drepanotrema anatinum, D. cimex, D. lucidum, Biomphalaria straminea?, Gundlachia radiata?, G. ticaga and Hebetancylus moricandi; the prosobranchs Pomacea archimedis?, Melanoides tuberculata and Littoridina sp. were also found. Bivalves were less diversified, represented only by Pisidium pulchellum? and Eupera simoni?. The taxonomic composition and the small size of many species reflect the intermittent condition of the basin. Additionally, the occurrence of shells of five terrestrial species (Helicina angulata, Gastrocopta pellucida...

Corrêa,Fabiano; Oliveira,Edson Fontes de; Tuchtenhagen,Thiago; Pouey,Juvêncio; Piedras,Sérgio.
Studies that organize lists of species are essential and act as the starting point for future discussions on the ecology of fish in environments that are poorly studied. The present paper describes the fish assemblage of the hydrographic basin of Chasqueiro Stream, an important component of the Mirim Lagoon system. Fish were collected during one year period between August/2012 and July/2013 in six sites, comprising three biotopes: upstream, reservoir and downstream. A total of 22,853 specimens were collected, and were distributed into 83 species, 20 families, and eight orders. The two species with the largest number of individuals captured were Bryconamericus iheringii with 2,904 (12.71%) and Cheirodon ibicuiensis with 2,868 (12.55%). Characiformes and...

Record of morphological deformities in Corydoras aff. longipinnis in two reservoirs under urban influence in Upper Iguaçu and Southern Coastal basins in Paraná State, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Mise,Fábio Teruo; Tencatt,Luiz; Santos,Bruno Ferreira dos.
Abstract In this work we report on the presence of morphological deformities in Corydoras aff. longipinnis from two reservoirs in Paraná State, Brazil. The frequency of deformities in the fish populations was 11% in Iraí and 10.5% in Capivari reservoirs. Considering that the frequency may be associated with impacts caused by anthropic activities, this information can be used as a metric in management systems and environmental monitoring.

Ichthyofauna of the Ribeirão Frutal and tributaries, upper Rio Paraná basin, Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Coelho,Paula N.; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho.
Abstract: The Ribeirão Frutal basin is located within the upper Rio Paraná system, in the Frutal municipality, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil. Until now, there was no complete ichthyological survey published for this small basin. Therefore, here we provided a list of fish species from the Ribeirão Frutal and some of its tributaries. We found 31 species of fishes representing five orders and ten families. We identify a likely undescribed and five non-native species in the Frutal basin. Lastly, we recommend new surveys of fishes in small hydrographic basins within upper Rio Paraná system.

First record and characteristics of damage caused by the spider mite Tetranychus neocaledonicus André on peanuts in the State of Paraíba, Brazil Bragantia
Silva,Carlos Alberto Domingues da; Gondim Junior,Manoel Guedes Correa.
ABSTRACT The red spider mite Tetranychus neocaledonicus André (Acari: Tetranychidae) is commonly found on cotton and castor bean in Brazil, especially in the northeast, but to date it had not been found damaging cultivated peanut. The objective of this research was to record the occurrence of this mite on peanut plants and describe its damage on this Fabaceae. The peanut plants, when infested by this mite, exhibit initially small whitish spots on the leaves, which quickly develop to chlorotic spots, followed by silvering, drying and fall because of their feeding. The severity of the damage caused to peanut and the adaptability of the mite to warm and dry conditions indicate that this species has potential as peanut pest in northeastern Brazil.

Cytotaxonomic and evolutionary considerations about karyotipic data of fishes from the Iguaçu River Basin in South of Brazil BABT
Kantek,Daniel Luis Zanella; Cipriano,Roger Raupp; Abilhoa,Vinícius; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Cestari,Marta Margarete.
The cytogenetic data available in the literature about the ichthyofauna of the Iguaçu River basin were analyzed in this review. The ichthyofauna was characterized by the high level of endemism and by the low diversity of species. Twenty-four of the eighty-one species were already karyotyped; six Characiformes, fourteen Siluriformes and four Perciformes. The chromosomal data showed the taxonomic and systematic complexity of the groups. Hypothesis related to the evolution of some Characiformes and Siluriformes groups from the Iguaçu River are proposed, as well as the utilization of karyotypic data for cytotaxonomy.
