Storage protein profile and amino acid content in wild rice Oryza glumaepatula PAB
Santos,Karina Freire D'eça Nogueira; Silveira,Ricardo Diógenes Dias; Martin-Didonet,Claudia Cristina Garcia; Brondani,Claudio.
- The objective of this work was to determine the total protein profile and the contents of the four major protein fractions (albumin, globulin, prolamin and glutelin) and of the amino acids in the endosperm of the rice wild species Oryza glumaepatula. The experiment was performed with 29 accessions of this species, collected from 13 Brazilian locations, and two commercial cultivars. Protein samples were prepared using dried, polished, and ground grains to obtain homogeneous, dry flour used in the preparation of extracts. Oryza glumaepatula accessions were identified with the highest levels of total protein, albumin and glutelin protein fractions, and amino acids (with the exception of tryptophan) in comparison to the two analized rice cultivars. The...

Grain yield and seed quality of soybean selected for high protein content PAB
Mello Filho,Odilon Lemos de; Sediyama,Carlos Sigueyuki; Moreira,Maurílio Alves; Reis,Múcio Silva; Massoni,Guilherme Augusto; Piovesan,Newton Denis.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of selection for high protein on seed physiological quality and grain yield of soybean. Four populations of BC1F4 and four of F4, each from a cross between a commercial variety and a line bearing high protein seeds, were used. The high protein content selection has a tendency to affect negatively the seed physiological quality. Estimates of correlation coefficients between protein content and grain yield were mostly negative but varied among populations. It is possible to obtain lines with high protein content, keeping the grain yield and the seed physiological quality of their respective recurrent progenitors.

Vega-Alvarez,Isrrael; Santacruz-Varela,Amalio; Rocandio-Rodríguez,Mario; Córdova-Téllez,Leobigildo; López-Sánchez,Higinio; Muñoz-Orozco,Abel; Hernández-Bautista,Aurelio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity of nine maize races (Zea mays ssp. mays) from Northwestern Mexico and one population of teosinte of the Balsas race (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis). A total of 649 alleles were identified, with an average of 20.9 alleles per locus using 31 microsatellite loci; 84.3% of them were polymorphic loci with a 0.49 expected heterozygosity. Graphic representation of principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed broad variation and population distribution. The highest probabilistic value obtained with the ΔK criterion confirmed the existence of five population groups clustered by the Bayesian model. This grouping coincided with the population distribution observed in the PCoA graph. Maize races...

Characterization for plant height and flowering date in the biological species oat PAB
Matiello,Rodrigo Rodrigues; Sereno,Maria Jane Cruz Mello; Barbosa Neto,José Fernandes; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Pacheco,Marcelo Teixeira; Pegoraro,Diego Girardi; Taderka,Ivone.
The use of wild oat races in artificial hybridization with cultivated oat (Avena sativa L.) has been used as a way of increasing the variability. This work aimed to identify the variability for plant height and flowering date of groups of cultivated oat genotypes, wild introductions of A. fatua L. and segregating populations of natural crosses between A. sativa and A. fatua. Wide genetic variability was observed for both traits in the groups and between them. The wild group of A. fatua L. showed high plants with early maturity, but in the segregating group there was reduced plant height and early maturity. The wild introductions of A. fatua L. studied in this work can be used in oat breeding programs to increase genetic variability by transferring specific...

Extracting female inbred lines from commercial sunflower hybrids PAB
Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de; Toledo,José Francisco Ferraz de.
The objective of this study was to obtain female inbred lines from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) hybrids. A methodology based on altering inbred lines carrying the fertility restorer gene (Rf) obtained from self pollinating hybrids into inbred lines with normal cytoplasm without the Rf gene was described. Further, derived male-sterile inbred lines were developed. The methodology was successfully used to obtain female inbreds from sunflower commercial hybrids. Although more time and labor consuming than the conventional female inbred line extraction methods, this methodology is advantageous in exploiting superior germplasms (commercial hybrids), which prompted us to develop practical procedures to allow its routinely use.

Phosphorus acquisition and internal utilization efficiency in tropical maize genotypes PAB
Parentoni,Sidney Netto; Souza Júnior,Claudio Lopes de.
The objective of this work was to determine the relative importance of phosphorus acquisition efficiency (PAE - plant P uptake per soil available P), and phosphorus internal utilization efficiency (PUTIL - grain yield per P uptake) in the P use efficiency (PUE - grain yield per soil available P), on 28 tropical maize genotypes evaluated at three low P and two high P environments. PAE was almost two times more important than PUTIL to explain the variability observed in PUE, at low P environments, and three times more important at high P environments. These results indicate that maize breeding programs, to increase PUE in these environments, should use selection index with higher weights for PAE than for PUTIL. The correlation between these two traits showed...
