We aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the entomo-vectoring approach, using as a case study the control of strawberry grey mould Botrytis cinerea, with the biocontrol fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, delivered to strawberry flowers by honey bees. The trial targets cultivations in the open field included four treatments: untreated control, chemical fungicide, entomovectored biocontrol, and chemical + biocontrol combined. The proportion of mouldy berries, and/or the marketable yield of healthy berries was recorded from each treatment, along with other parameters of local interest, and showed the best results in the treatment biocontrol+chemical control, and in the entomovectored biocontrol with respect to untreated control. |

The purpose of this guideline is to describe the methods used during ReSolVe project for soil functionality assessment, so they can be implemented in similar studies. A brief introduction first underlines what are the main functions of soil and why maintaining an optimal soil functionality is particularly of major interest in viticulture. Then the different protocols selected for ReSolVe project and this guideline are presented according to the following classification: - Part I: assessment of soil physical and chemical features; - Part II: assessment of soil biological features (ecosystem service provision and providers); - Part III: assessment of rhizosphere biological features; - Part IV: assessment of grapevine quantitative and qualitative... |

OrgPlan is a computer package designed to support farmers and consultants in planning a conversion to organic farming. It consists of two main elements: the basic planning module and a database with data for organic, in-conversion and conventional data. It was developed with DEFRA funding (OF 0159) by a partnership between the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, the University of Hertfordshire, Elm Farm Research Centre and SAC. The objective of this work was to obtain feedback before its general release on the suitability of OrgPlan in supporting the process of planning a conversion to organic farming. Given the risks of the organic conversion process and the sensitive nature of the financial reports that OrgPlan can generate, further testing with... |

In 2001, the German Federal Government established the Federal Scheme for Organic Agriculture (BÖL). The goal was to improve the professionalism of organic farming in Germany; to support sustained growth in production of organic food; and to stimulate a corresponding growth in the market for organic food. The paper presents results of an evaluation carried out by an international team in 2012. Our evaluation focused in particular on all research initiated and completed in period 2003 to 2010. The overall aim of the evaluation was to assess the relevance and impact of the research in relation to the BÖL’s goals, the effectiveness of the deployment of the research funding resources, and the efficiency of programme management. Recommendations relate to... |

Wad is the acronym of Weija Agricultural Development limited, the company is an associative enterprise; it works exclusively with small scale farmers from the rural areas in Ghana. The company doesn’t owe farms. It depends on farmers for its products. The farmers it works with also depend on the company for marketing of their products. There is therefore a synergy between the company and the farmers groups it works with. It works with various farmers groups, for example Ekumfi Atwia Wad organic farmers association for pineapples from the Ekumfi district of the central region of Ghana EAWOFA. The company is export based; all its products are exported to Switzerland and Germany. Background and main chapter The company started processing in the year... |

Information on the situation of organic horticulture in Germany is scarce and thus poses a constraint to further development of the sector. For example, not much is known about the costs of acquiring information necessary for the decision to switch from conventional to organic production. The objective of this project is twofold: (1) to describe the institutional and economic conditions of organic horticulture in Germany (2) to assess the costs of acquiring information incurred by decision-makers before, during and after the decision to start organic production. Data are being collected by expert interviews and farm surveys. Initial results show that experts from the fields of certification, monitoring, extension, marketing and research expect a more... |

A certified organic farm has been developed for research and demonstration of organic production system for low rainfall/arid areas at central research farm, Central Arid ZOne Research Institute(CAZRI), Jodhpur,Rajasthan, INDIA. Rainwater harvesting, composting, enhancing agrodiversity, preparation of bio-pesticides are being done at farm. Improvement in fauna and flora diversity, soil organic carbon and other properties have been observed. Crop resilience increased to high climatic variability/changed climte. Presently research is going on to develop e system for high value crops of arid zone i.e. cumin, psyllium, sesame and cluster bean(Guar). Almost weekly, Farmers' groups visit and get hands on training on organic system. |

Mastitis is the most significant disease affecting the health, welfare and economic productivity of dairy cattle and is recognised by Defra as a major economic and welfare concern. Research into the efficacy of homeopathic treatments and of management control of mastitis on organic dairy farms have both been identified as research priorities in recent Defra funded reviews of organic dairy farming. This study examined the use of a specific mode of homeopathic treatment in the prevention of mastitis and quantified the effect that the year-round, prophylactic use of nosodes, supplied to the cattle in the drinking water, had on the number of clinical cases of mastitis on somatic cell counts within herds. Context and background Organic dairy farming is a... |

Organic Agriculture (OA) is a reply to Global Society‘s interest in food safety and enviromental conservation. Many European countries have significantly developed the OA sector, where Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part. Since, OA principles, methods and products are constantly evolving, an increasing number of agricultural agencies are using Web sites or portals to provide OA information to stakeholders. However, finding trustworthy information on OA is still time consuming, fragmented and associated with linguistic obstacles. This paper reports a new on-line service that provides (a) access to multilingual, specialized, updated and certified on-line information covering all OA plant and animal production aspects, (b) access to... |

Sustainable development of agricultural landscapes has become a primary issue as reflected in many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Comparing alternative potential technologies and assessing relevant results in terms of their implementation on agroecosystems in specific environmental and social contexts is a complex matter. In this article, a conceptual model to evaluate sustainability of agroecosystems under a systems perspective is presented, which is based on dimensions and properties of agroecosystems. Examples of applications of the conceptual model are given that address sustainability assessment of agricultural technologies and agroecosystems. |

The problem Human existence depends on nature! Nature provides a range of services, often referred to as ecosystem services. These are the benefits humans receive, directly or indirectly, from nature. The four major groups of ecosystem services include provisioning services (food, fibre, timber, water, etc.), regulating services (air quality and climate regulation, water regulation, erosion regulation, pollination, etc.), supporting services (soil formation, nutrient and water cycling, photosynthesis, etc.) and cultural services (cultural diversity, spiritual and religious values, knowledge systems, recreation, ecotourism, etc.). Biodiversity, which is very often defined as “totality of genes, species, and ecosystems of a region” is often used as a... |

In this overview, the preceding effects of crop pairs are classified by establishing schematic diagrams for use in crop rotation planning in low external input or organic agricultural systems. Results from previous crop rotation trials and earlier diagrams cited in the literature were evaluated in order to classify the succession effects for more than 25 main crop species. Additional information about several cultivation remarks were annotated in small letters for every crop sequence. In a tabular overview, the crop species were arranged into three main categories according to the different duration of their pre-crop effects: I. N fixing, soil fertility increasing legumes and legume-grass mixtures; II. N depleting, intense soil fertility reducing... |

Although there is a demand for organic soft fruit in the UK, especially from processors, these crops are only grown on a very small scale at present. As the demand for organic fruit continues to grow much of this is therefore currently met by imports. Lack of technical knowledge, information and advice for growers, together with uncertainties over the economics of production are at present major barriers preventing growers becoming involved in this area. The purpose of this project is to address this problem, by collating the knowledge gained on this topic in previous projects (OF0150), updating it with new developments and produce a technical guide on organic soft fruit production for growers. The content of the booklet is likely to be based on a booklet... |
