Current issues in organic food: Italy Organic Eprints
Canavari, Maurizio.
This chapter suggests some relevant topics for further analysis of organic farming and organic food markets in Italy. The discussion regards different aspects, taking into consideration farmer issues, supply chain issues, consumer issues, policy and trade issues, including farmers’ income, sustainable development and international trade. All these aspects show important implications with organic agriculture. A final section takes into consideration further emerging issues, linked to globalisation and to the need to foster further research activities in support of the diffusion of organic farming not only in Italy, but also in developing countries.

Soil Quality Management - Concepts and Terms Organic Eprints
Schjønning, P.; Elmholt, S.; Christensen, B.T..
The industrialization of agriculture and the concurrent increase in societal concerns on environmental protection and food quality have put focus on agricultural management and its impact on soil quality. Soil quality involves the ability of the soil to maintain an appropriate productivity, while simultaneously reducing the effect on the environment and contributing to human health. This development has changed society’s expectations to science and there is an urgent need to improve the communication among researchers from different scientific disciplines. The interaction of scientists with decision-makers is a topic of utmost relevance for future developments in agriculture. Reflexive objectivity denotes the exercise of raising one’s consciousness of the...

Building Farm Resilience in a Changing Climate: Challenges, Potentials, and Ways Forward for Smallholder Cocoa Production in Bolivia Organic Eprints
Jacobi, Johanna; Bottazzi, Patrick; Pillco, Maria Isabel; Schneider, Monika; Rist, Stephan.
Migration from the Bolivian Altiplano to the Amazonian lowlands poses a number of challenges related to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Alto Beni, located in the Bolivian Yungas at the interface between two altitudinal zones, is a critical area in this respect. Unsustainable land use practices are leading to soil erosion, shallow landslides, as well as forest and biodiversity loss. Settlers from the Altiplano see themselves confronted with an ecosystem that does not support the agricultural systems they were once used to. Soil degradation and government incentives have promoted migration further into the rainforest, creating pressure on local indigenous groups and biodiversity. The best-suited land use system for the fragile soils...

Ch 2: Organic farming: The arrival and uptake of the dissident agriculture meme in Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Only four years elapsed between the coining of the term ‘organic farming’ and the founding of an association devoted to the advocacy of organic farming. The world’s first association dedicated to the promotion and proliferation of organic agriculture, the Australian Organic Farming and Gardening Society (AOFGS), was founded in Sydney, Australia, in October 1944. It is a geographically surprising sequel to the coining of the term ‘organic farming’ by Lord Northbourne and its first appearance in war-time Britain. Northbourne’s manifesto of organic farming, Look to the Land, was published in London in May 1940. When the AOFGS published a periodical, the Organic Farming Digest, it was the first association to publish an organics advocacy journal. The present...

Ecological economics and organic farming Organic Eprints
Kledal, Paul Rye; Kjeldsen, Chris; Refsgaard, Karen; Söderbaum, Peter.
Ecological economics (EE) is proposed as an approach to decision making and planning in organic farming. It is argued that EE is better suited for this task than the conventional neoclassical economy approach. The contribution that EE can make to the organic farming movement is apparent on the ontological level, through its focus on socio-economic systems as nested subsystems of the ecosystem. In addition, EE’s stance on the issues of allocation, distribution and scale seems to constitute a more appropriate conceptualization about the interaction between socio-economic systems and the environment, which is more closely aligned to the principal aims of the organic farming movement. The concepts of time and scale are used as examples of how EE, with input...

Ökologische Ziegenfleischproduktion - Eine Situationsanalyse Organic Eprints
Zenke, Sabine; Rahmann, Gerold; Hamm, Ulrich; Euen, Sven.

Talking Agricultural Sustainability Issues - an Interview with Dr. Gurdev Khush Organic Eprints
Bhullar, Gurbir S..
Dr. Gurdev Khush is an agricultural scientist well known to the world for his remarkable role in the development of high-yielding rice varieties, which greatly contributed towards ushering a number of countries (particularly in Asia) into the Green Revolution. While leading research at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, as Principal Plant Breeder and Head of the Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biochemistry division, he contributed more than 300 rice varieties including mega-varieties such as IR36, which was planted over 11 million hectares in Asia in the 1980s and attained the status of the most widely planted variety of any food crop. With largescale adoption of these high-yielding varieties, many rice-producing countries attained...

Organic Viticulture World-Wide Organic Eprints
Geier, Bernward; Hofmann, Uwe; Willer, Helga.
In most wine growing countries organic viticulture is now becoming more and more important. In most non-European countries organic viticulture is still in an initial stage and the number of organic vineyards is still small. The expansion of organic viticulture is hindered by the fact that in many countries incentives are provided for growers to adopt integrated pest management. Such incentive schemes are generally supported and promoted by the government, the chemical industry and conventional producer associations. As demand for conventional wines is booming, market forces do not provide much incentive for growers to convert to organic production methods. The limited knowledge about organic viticulture also poses a severe restriction of its expansion....

Böhm, Herwart; Oldenburg, Elisabeth; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Pest and disease management in organic farming: implications and inspirations for plant breeding Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Pautasso, Marco; Finckh, Maria R.; Wolfe, Martin.
The co-evolution of plants with their pests and diseases is a major driving force in evolution in nature. As a consequence, many pests and pathogens have multiple functions involved in survival on host populations. As a result of this continuous co-evolution, plant pests and pathogens have been selected for high reproduction rates, because of the low probability of an individual being able to find or infect a compatible host plant. For their part, host plants in natural ecosystems are often interspersed among other plant species and show wide and changing variation among individuals for genes affecting specific or non-specific resistance to each of the many pathogens that may attack them. Throughout the plant world there are dynamic and unstable equilibria...

Qualitätssicherung Bio-Alpenmilch Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael.
