Multiplicadores domésticos “SAMEA” en un modelo multisectorial económico y ambiental de España AgEcon
Morilla, Carmen R.; Cardenete, Manuel Alejandro; Llanes, Gaspar.

Price Discovery and Pricing Choice Under Divergent Supply Scenarios in an Experimental Market for Fed Cattle AgEcon
Ward, Clement E..
Previous research has not addressed the impacts of alternative supply conditions on price discovery and pricing choice. This study estimated models with data from an experimental market, the Fed Cattle Market Simulator, encompassing live weight, dressed weight, and grid pricing under two alternative supply scenarios. Significance of variables explaining transaction price variation and pricing choice differed between the two supply periods. Overall results were close to expectations. Higher quality cattle marketed with a grid brought higher prices in both supply periods. Having lower quality cattle in either supply period increased the probability of cattle being marketed (purchased) on a live weight basis.

Animal Disease Economic Impacts: A Survey of Literature and Typology of Research Approaches AgEcon
Pritchett, James G.; Thilmany, Dawn D.; Johnson, Kamina K..
Animal diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) are a threat to the animal product marketing sector and the broader economy. Policy makers and industry stakeholders seek a means of assessing a disease threat's economic impacts when evaluating prevention and mitigation measures. But, differences in the focus of the impact analysis (production level, market prices, welfare), level of analysis (geographically, marketing phase) and proposed policy alternatives all influence the analytical approach. This paper surveys previous research, focusing on methodological approaches and results. Drawing from past research and future economic data needs, a typology is developed to guide researchers when defining the scope and policy alternatives of various...

Phosphorus-Based Application of Livestock Manure and the Law of Unintended Consequences AgEcon
Norwood, F. Bailey; Chvosta, Jan.
The application of manure phosphorus at rates above crop uptake has resulted in water pollution for some regions. In response, new manure management standards will require some farms to match manure phosphorus applications rates with crop uptake. For some regions, this will lead to more crop acres and a shift toward crops with greater nutrient uptake, both of which will increase nitrogen runoff. The greater nitrogen runoff could offset the lower phosphorus runoff to result in greater water pollution. This demonstrates the law of unintended consequences, which results when policy does not consider how economic agents respond to incentives.

An Analysis of Rural Livelihood Systems in Rainfed Rice-based Farming Systems of Coastal Orissa AgEcon
Samal, Parshuram; Barah, B.C.; Pandey, Sushil.
The livelihood systems of farm households in coastal Orissa have been analysed based on a sample of 193 farmers. It is found that the incomes of these households were quite diversified. As against the general impression that crop income dominates household income, it is observed that the non-farm income has emerged important in the coastal Orissa. Rice, which has been traditionally the main source of income in this area, has slipped to the third position, next to remittances and income from non-farm activities. The income from non-farm works and rice has accounted for 71 per cent and 20 per cent of the total income, respectively. The non-farm sources have contributed more than 90 per cent towards income inequality. The source-wise income share has also...

Impact of Alternative Land Management Options on Soil Fertility and Erosion in Uganda AgEcon
Birungi, Patrick; Hassan, Rashid M..
Using a data set collected in eight districts of Uganda, this study investigates how investment in soil fertility management (SFM) and conservation practices may affect natural resource outcomes, particularly the extent and level of soil erosion and soil nutrient loss. The study used ordered probit models and the results suggest that investment in SFM and conservation practices greatly improves soil fertility and reduces soil erosion. From a policy perspective, public investment to encourage use of SFM and conservation technologies would help the country achieve sustainable agricultural production.

THE NECESSITY OF STRATEGIC THINKING IN HUNGARIAN AGRIBUSINESS AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Husti, Istvan.
Based on analysis of a time series of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indicator and Relative Trade Advantage Index the performance of Hungarian agriculture and food industry has declined rapidly during the last fifteen years. This fact highlights the importance of searching new paradigms in development. In short term the increasing of production–quantity does not seem to be a rational way. The only alternative is the product–differentiation strategy. Under conditions of increasing competition in foreign markets the importance of domestic markets gains in importance. The domestic market is a dynamic one, too: the producers should be better focussed of new demands of specific consumer segments (e.g. elder generations, ethnic minorities etc…). On the...

A diplomás munkaerő helyzetének vizsgálata (Heves, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megyékben és Budapesten) AgEcon
Toth, Eszter.
-------------------- Based on 1022 answers of a survey it can be stated that the characteristic range of net average monthly salary is between 100 and 180 thousand HUF among...

Performance of traditional cooperatives: the Portuguese Douro wine cooperatives AgEcon
Rebelo, Joao; Caldas, Jose Vaz; Matulich, Scott C..
Globalization is challenging the very core of cooperative governance and ownership decision, especially in Southern European countries, like Portugal, where a large number of producers are organized in traditional and Mediterranean-style agricultural cooperatives. This paper analyses the effects of governance and control variables related with size over two alternative indicators of performance: revenues transferred to members/patrons and capital structure. The results suggest that these cooperatives have difficulties being sustainable in the more competitive global wine markets, if they follow, essentially, a practice of maximum patronage refund, reducing their capacity to improve leverage and to finance more profitable, but risky, long run investments.

Direct Payments for Environmental Services from Mountain Agriculture in Japan: Evaluating its Effectiveness and Drawing Lessons for Developing Countries AgEcon
Sakuyama, Takumi.
This article evaluates the effectiveness of ex-post targeting of the direct payment program for mountain agriculture in Japan. A regression analysis explaining the entry into the program shows that the farm profitability and the production cost were significant positive and negative factor, respectively, in determining the uptake, while the efforts by local governments were a robust factor in facilitating the enrollment. These findings imply ineffective ex-post targeting and call for the differentiation of the premium, alternative incentives to promote forestation for the un-enrolled fields and additional funds targeted to those prefectures with the low uptake ratio. Lessons drawn from the Japanese experience for effective incentive measures in developing...

Economies of Size, Farmer, Cooperatives, and Social Efficiency: Empirical Results from Swedish Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Hedberg, Anna.
The concept of economies of size is crucial for the analysis of price and output equilibria for a marketing cooperative. If there are economies of size in processing, a cooperatively organized processing industry may be socially preferable when compared to an investor-owned processor with monopsony power. This study investigates whether cost structure can be used as an efficiency argument for the cooperative dairy industry in Sweden. The results indicate economies of size in milk processing and, accordingly, marketing cooperatives appear to be a socially efficient form of business organization.

Optimal Length of Moving Average to Forecast Futures Basis AgEcon
Hatchett, Robert B.; Brorsen, B. Wade; Anderson, Kim B..
The question addressed in this study is which length of historical moving average provides the best forecast of futures basis. Differences in observed forecast accuracy among the different moving averages are usually less than a cent per bushel, and most are not statistically significant. Further, the search for an optimal length of moving average may be futile since the optimal length depends on how much structural change has occurred. Our recommendation is to use moving averages when there has been no structural change and to use last year’s basis or an alternative approach if the forecaster perceives that a structural change has occurred.
