Throughout the past three decades, since World War II, development has been viewed as an important goal of national life for the poor and rich nations alike. The emerging nations of Africa, Asia and Latin America have come to see development as a continuation of the struggle that has won them independence. Development of these nations is thus often associated with the ever continuing struggle to remain free from alien domination. The post World War II era was consequently characterized by an active pursuit of economic development. As the LDC's plunged into planning for development, the developed nations while pursuing their own goals have shown an even greater tendency and preparedness to assist the low income countries attain their goals of improving... |

What difference does it make whether farmers are served by cooperatives or investor owned firms? Are these two forms of organizations really different? Cooperative ownership principles result in owners being more interdependent and interactive with managers of the work organization than do investor ownership principles. This difference results in a difference in manager roles and cooperative firm behavior unless the interdependence and interaction is offset by technological constraints, complexity, product diversity, and rate of change in the environment. Institutional Analysis and Organizational Behavior-Contingency Theory are used to link the influence of ownership principles and task environment to managerial role behavior. |

Decision theory affords a means for the objectively rational use of information in decision-making. Concern has been expressed from time to time that the application of decision theory is, or is sometimes, of doubtful appropriateness. In this paper an attempt is made to identify a principal source of this concern and the mis-specification of decision problems using decision theory that it implies. Suggestions are offered as to how the merits of the use of decision theory might be retained in decision-making situations where doubts may arise about the appropriateness of its application. |

Because rice is the staple food of the majority of the world’s population, particularly of the poorer people of developing countries, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was founded to generate new technology to rapidly expand the supply of rice. IRRI has achieved extraordinary success, not only through the development of specific varieties of rice such as IR8, but by demonstrating approaches to rice cultivation that have had profound influence on human welfare and on the environment within rice research and production take place. The international Food Policy Research (IFPRI), as the policy-oriented center in the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) system, has maintained a long-term collaborative research... |

There is little published information about what influences individual lamb consumers in Australia, and the factors uppermost in their mind as they make their purchases. Gross consumption and price relationships are available from statistical studies, whilst taste panel responses relating to organoleptic properties are limited to material from technical experiments. It is contended that the gross approach to identifying consumer habits masks the individual needs of consumers. Furthermore, it is suggested that consumers have specific requirements for lamb cuts and joints, but these are compromised at the shop-counter by other factors such as price and the price of alternatives. A survey was conducted amongst 479 people to identify whether people were as... |

This note demonstrates that a certain class of stochastic problems for determination of optimal fertilizer application rates in the presence of fertilizer carry-over can be simplified to static, certainly equivalent problems. Conditions required for certainty equivalence to hold are: (1) fertilizer carry-over is agronomically equivalent to applied fertilizer; and (2) some addition of fertilizer is optimal in every decision period. |
