Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse, 1894) is an exotic Culicidae species in Brazil. Since its first report in this country, the mosquito has been increasing its geographic distribution. This mosquito is a natural dengue and Japanese Encephalitis virus vector in Asia. The females preference for oviposition sites related with homospecific immature presence was assessed. The experiment was performed with Aedes albopictus from laboratory colony since March ]999, in the Laboratório de Entomologia Médica e Veterinária, Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Paraná. The preferred container was the one that kept pupae for 24 hours, with 643 eggs, 30,6% at total. The eggs recipients received 11,45% from total set by the females, and the following... |

Centris (Ptilocentris) danunciae sp. nov. (Peru, Huanta) and Centris (Melacentris) bitaeniata sp. nov. (Peru, Iquitos) are described. Some taxonomic notes are also given for Centris (Melacentris) dorsata Lepeletier, 1841 (= Centris ehrhardti Schrottky, 1902, syn. nov. = Centris dorsata var. maculosa Friese, 1924, syn. nov.) and Centris (Melacentris) collaris Lepeletier, 1841 (= Centris pocograndensis Schrottky, 1902, syn. nov.), species forgotten since their description. |

The ectoparasitoid habit of larvae and the active predatory habit of adults of Aleochara Gravenhorst, 1802 established this group as natural fly regulators and important for ecological studies, biological control programs and forensic entomology. In the current study, a new aleocharine species, Aleochara pseudochrysorrhoa sp. nov., from southern Brazil, is described and its natural history is briefly discussed. The species has a robust body, uniformly dark-brown to black with apex of abdomen rust-brown, median lobe of male with expanded bulbus, sclerites of internal sac forming complex arrangement, and female with spermatheca L-shaped. Aleochara pseudochrysorrhoa sp. nov. may be considered to be closely related to the species belonging to the lustrica... |

Hylophylax naevia of moderately dense forest undergrowth and H. punctulata of open swamp undergrowth tend to sally for arthropods in low foliage rather than sally to the ground among large ant-following antbirds. They and related Hypocnemoides melanopogon of swamp understory edges are also limited by their microhabitat niches in following ants. Myrmoderus ferrugineus and M. loricatus, ground-walking small antbirds seemingly derived from Hylophylax, follow ants infrequently, probably because ants, large ant-following birds, and predators would attack them if they did so. |

Two males and one female of Holothuriophilus tomentosus (Ortmann, 1894) comb. nov. were collected in Enseada de Ratones, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Since its original description, as Pinnaxodes tomentosus, this species has only been collected recently, from the Pontal do Daniela, also in Florianópolis. The previously unknown male is described and the female is redescribed herein. The characteristics of this material lead us to believe that Pinnaxodes tomentosus should be transferred to the genus Holothuriophilus Nauk, 1880. |

This paper deals with the first report of the nematodes Dispharynx nasuta (Rudolphi, 1819) Stiles & Hassall, 1920, Gongylonema ingluvicola Ransom, 1904, Oxyspirura mansoni (Cobbold, 1879) Ransom, 1904, Subulura brumpti (Lopez-Neyra, 1922) Cram, 1923 and Tetrameres fissipina (Diesing, 1860) Travassos, 1914, parasitizing the ring-necked pheasant, Phasianus colchicus Linnaeus, 1758 in Brazil. Morphological data on the parasites as well as on the prevalence, mean intensity, mean abundance and range of intensity of the nematodes in the infected birds are provided. |

The passion fruit plant is a host for several different phytophagous mites, mainly those belonging to the Tarsonemidae, Tenuipalpidae and Tetranychidae families. Among the Tetranychidae species are Tetranychus mexicanus (McGregor, 1950) and Tetranychus desertorum Banks, 1900. The occurrence of Tetranychus marianae McGregor, 1950 was detected on yellow passion fruit Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa Degener plants under field and greenhouse conditions at the headquarters of Embrapa Cassava & Fruits Tropical Research in Cruz das Almas County, State of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Prior records of T. marianae on the passion fruit crop in Brazil as well as the biological aspects of this species are unknown. The study on the biology of T. marianae on P.... |

Is registered for the first time in the South Brazilian coast, the ermit crab Pagurus brevidactylus Stimpson, 1859, wich previous South limit of distribution was at São Paulo State and now it is extended to the Santa Catarina State coast line. Were collected 100 ermit crabs, being 50 males and 50 females, from wich 20 ovigerous were found. The organisms were collected by scuba diving in Ponta da Sepultura and Retiro dos Padres beach, on the rock and sand bottom, at Bombinhas city, in October and November 1995. |

The aim of lhe presenl work is to descrihe the biological cycle of the Apiomenis lanipes (Fabricius, 1803) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) on lahoralory conditions. Adults of Drosophila sp. (Diptera, Drosophilidae) and Ceralitis capitula (Wiedemann, 1824) (Diptera. Tephritidae) was offered for hug feeding (nymphs and adults). The developmenlal of the entire cycle (egg to adult) was 288.26 days and 294.85 days for males and females, respectively. The duration of egg stage and nymphal stage was 23.5 days and 269.02 days, respectively. |
