Moureanthidium, gen.n. is proposed for Dianthidium subarenarium Schwarz, 1933 and to include four new species of Anthidiine bees from Brazil, Moureanthidium paranaense, sp.n from Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Moureanthidium capixaba, sp.n. from Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Moureanthidium bahianum, sp.n. from Vitória da Conquista, Bahia and Moureanthidium catarinense, sp.n. from Seara, Santa Catarina. The males are characterized by the border of the seventh tergum strongly reflexed, densely hairy and with a pair of lateral projections and the third sternite with two spines or little projections at the middle, near the apex. |

Six kinds of crucifer (broccoli, cabbage, califlower, kale, mustard and rugula) were tested, as food, for larvae od Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained eith califlower, broccoli, rugula and kale. Four sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose) were tested to know their influence on the number of oviposition in female of Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained with fructose, glucose and sucrose. |

Ectoparasitic mites on Brazilian non-poisonous snakes, collected from March 1976 to December 1979, are herein reported. A systematic study of the Ixodorhynchidae, which include exclusively parasites of snakes is given, including all immature forms. Two new genera are described: Ophiogongylus gen.n. with two species: Ophiogongylus rotundus sp.n. and Ophiogongylus breviscutum sp.n. and Chironobius gen.n. with two species: Chironobius alvus sp.n. and Chironobius nordestinus sp.n. Ixobioides brachispinosus sp.n. and the male of Ixobioides fonsecae (Fain) are also described. Immature forms, hosts relations and geographical distribution are given for the species. |

In this paper 19 additional mammalian species are reported in the Atlantic forest of the Paranean Serra do Mar, southern Brazil, including threatened and rare species. These findings resulted from a one-year field research in the western slope of the Serra do Mar, Piraquara municipality, with additional review of reports about mammal distribution in the region. Preliminarily mammal richness in the region is round 54 species, but this number could be higher with more systematic surveys, particularly with regards to bats. The occurrence of the hog-nosed skunk, Conepatus chinga (Molina, 1782), is reported for the first time in the eastern portion of Paraná, a State vastly deforested during the last century in Brazil. |

Howler monkeys (Alouatta Lacèpéde, 1799) are folivores-frugivores with flexible diets depending on conditions. Here, we compare the diets of Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) in two riparian forests (island and mainland), in Porto Rico region, Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil. Howlers were followed from October 2004 to September 2005 in the riparian forest of a 1,050 ha island and in the continuous riparian forest on the mainland (left bank of the river). The "scan sampling" method with instantaneous samples every 15 minutes was used. Besides vines, diet breadth was similar: 17 species consumed on the island versus 16 species on the mainland. Both consumed leaves followed by fruits more than any other food type (leaves: island - 65%, mainland - 49%,... |

The outcome of a wild bee fauna survey in a secondary forest is reported. Sampling was carried out mainly on herbaceous and shrubby vegetation under and at the border of the forest. Results are compared with data collected with the same methodology from a previously surveyed grassland nearby. The secondary forest was richer in Anthophoridae and Apidae species, and less diverse in Megachilidae. Similarity between the two habitats was low. Several unidentified species of Ceratinula, Trichocerapis mirabilis and the stingless bees Melipona bicolor, M. quadrifasciata, M. marginata, Paratrigona subnuda, Scaptotrigona tubiba and S. xanthotricha, are among the species dependent on the forest environment to survive. Bee population densities in the forest understory... |
