PCB levels in sediments (bulk and fraction <63µm), suspended matter and zooplankton from the Belgian continental shelf of the North Sea and the Scheldt estuary were educated in relation to their organic carbon content, their lipid content and, for sediments, their particle size distribution. PCB accumulation mechanisms are discussed, considering the importance of direct contamination (absorption onto the cell surfaces, absorption through the cell walls and partitioning into the cell lipids) for suspended matter and sediments, and of indirect contamination through the food for zooplankton. Geographical and seasonal variations are described. |

Representatives of the family Tetragonicipitidae encountered in samples from marine and lagoonal localities on the Yucatecan continental shelf are described. <i>Ph. yucatanensis</i> n. sp. is added to the <i>furciger</i> species-group of the genus <i>Phyllopodopsyllus</i>. Resulting from the discovery of four new species which, at first sight, show close resemblance with the species known in the genus <i>Diagoniceps</i> Willey, a review of the genus is presented. Initially, the type-species of the genus <i>Diagoniceps, D. laevis</i> Willey, is redescribed in detail based on material from the Bahamas and specimens reported previously from Bermuda, type-region. Three out of the six previously... |

A new Antarctic lysianassid amphipod, Orchomene hureaui sp.n. from Addlie Land is described and illustrated. The male is unknown. The 2 females were from the stomach of an Adelie penguin. Its epistome is straight and is just in front of the upper lip. The lateral cephalic lobes are rounded and eyes are present. Coxa I is trapezoidal and wide distally, the carpus of gnathopod I shorter than propodite and with no postero-distal lobe, the palm is transverse, slightly convex and deeply toothed. Gnathopod II is subchelate and coxa V has subequal inferior lobes. Uropod III has long setose branches and the telson is divided. The ecology and relations with other Orchomene spp are discussed. |

Feeding live food to aquatic invertebrates is a time consuming and very often, if not always a troublesome business for those involved in culturing problems. It has already been shown (although the number of papers on the matter is scarce), that live food such as bacteria or algae, can be stocked for future use by freezing or lyophylization. During experiments on the growth rate of larvae of the brine shrimp, <i>Artemia salina</i>, we have tested several preparation methods of the same algal food (<i>Dunaliella</i> spec.): living cells, suspensions homogenized by Ultrason, algal suspensions frozen at -25°C and suspensions slowly evaporated to dryness, followed by resuspension and homogenization. Preliminary results seem to indicate... |

During a research of a shallow brackish water sheet, the Dievengat, located on the territory of the region of Knokke, some copepoda were collected, amongst which three that had not previously been found in Belgium. The items originate from soil samples through means of a glass tube with a diameter of 6 cm²; it concerns a soil rich in detritus. The water is about 20 cm in depth at the location of the sample taking. Samples were taken over the period from August 1968 until May 1969. The salinity is susceptible to a relatively wide variation. Usually values between 12 promille S and 18 promille S were measured. The maximum measured was 19.03 promille S on 16/12/68 and the minimum measured 8.41 promille S on 5/5/69. According to the system of Venece, 1958, the... |

The different serotyping systems, based on thermostable O antigens, reported for <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> and <i>V. ordalii</i> were compared by quantitative agglutination, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and subsequent silver staining or Western blotting (immunoblotting) of purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), using polyclonal rabbit antisera. The results demonstrate that 16 different serotypes within <i>V. anguillarum</i> (designated 01 to 016) can be distinguished. Each of these serotypes is characterized by a distinct polysaccharide banding pattern, as revealed by silver-stained gels of purified LPS. The comparative analysis allowed a complete alignment of the different stereotypes for the... |

<i>Spirobolbolaimus boucherorum</i> sp.n. (Microlaimidac) and <i>Sabatieria maboyae</i> sp.n. (Comesomatidae) arc described, and <i>Dorylaimopsis pellucidum</i> (Cobb, 1920) is discussed. Intersex specimens have been found in all three species. <i>Spirobolbolaimus boucherorum</i> sp.n. is characterized by its multispiral amphidcal fovea, number and localization of the cervical setae arranged in six rows posterior to the amphids, and large banana-shaped sperm. <i>Sabatieria maboyae</i> sp.n., a member of the <i>S. pulchra</i> group, possesses long posteriorly located cervical setae and long spicules. |

In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated. |
