Organochlorines in different fractions of sediments and in different planktonic compartments of the Belgian continental shelf and the Scheldt estuary OMA
Delbeke, K.; Joiris, C.R.; Bossicart, M..
PCB levels in sediments (bulk and fraction <63µm), suspended matter and zooplankton from the Belgian continental shelf of the North Sea and the Scheldt estuary were educated in relation to their organic carbon content, their lipid content and, for sediments, their particle size distribution. PCB accumulation mechanisms are discussed, considering the importance of direct contamination (absorption onto the cell surfaces, absorption through the cell walls and partitioning into the cell lipids) for suspended matter and sediments, and of indirect contamination through the food for zooplankton. Geographical and seasonal variations are described.

Competition between the sibling species Tisbe holothuriae and T. battagliai (Harpacticoida) OMA
Bergmans, M.; Janssens, P.P.M..
The influence of the salinity on the performance of the sibling species Tisbe holothuriae and T. battagliai in pure and mixed cultures was studied, using laboratory stocks adapted to 32 pro mille for over 175 generations. Cohort studies show that T. holothuriae has higher growth rates (R0 and r) at 32 pro mille, T. battagliai at 20 pro mille. The latter's life cycle is much less affected by the difference in salinity. 'De Wit' replacement series were used to study competitive interactions. Without water renewal, T. holothuriae eliminates its sibling species in less than 2 generations, apparently through chemical interference. With water...

New Tetragonicipitidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Yucatecan continental shelf (Mexico), including a revision of the genus Diagoniceps Willey OMA
Fiers, F..
Representatives of the family Tetragonicipitidae encountered in samples from marine and lagoonal localities on the Yucatecan continental shelf are described. Ph. yucatanensis n. sp. is added to the furciger species-group of the genus Phyllopodopsyllus. Resulting from the discovery of four new species which, at first sight, show close resemblance with the species known in the genus Diagoniceps Willey, a review of the genus is presented. Initially, the type-species of the genus Diagoniceps, D. laevis Willey, is redescribed in detail based on material from the Bahamas and specimens reported previously from Bermuda, type-region. Three out of the six previously...

Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock fed diets with different fatty acid composition OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) on the reproductive performance and offspring quality of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was evaluated in a 180-day trial. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing different levels of fatty acids, high 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA concentrations, high 18:2n-6 and low n-3 HUFA, and low 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA, were fed ad libitum to three groups of six females. Fecundity was improved by the addition of higher amounts of 18:2n-6 (from 3 to 13 mg g-1 DW). As a consequence of higher fecundity, smaller eggs were obtained most likely because the number of oocytes competing for a limited amount of yolk was higher. The...

The influence of algal food preparation on its nutritional efficiency for Artemia salina L. larvae OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Feeding live food to aquatic invertebrates is a time consuming and very often, if not always a troublesome business for those involved in culturing problems. It has already been shown (although the number of papers on the matter is scarce), that live food such as bacteria or algae, can be stocked for future use by freezing or lyophylization. During experiments on the growth rate of larvae of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, we have tested several preparation methods of the same algal food (Dunaliella spec.): living cells, suspensions homogenized by Ultrason, algal suspensions frozen at -25°C and suspensions slowly evaporated to dryness, followed by resuspension and homogenization. Preliminary results seem to indicate...

Drie copepoden, nieuw voor de Belgische fauna OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
During a research of a shallow brackish water sheet, the Dievengat, located on the territory of the region of Knokke, some copepoda were collected, amongst which three that had not previously been found in Belgium. The items originate from soil samples through means of a glass tube with a diameter of 6 cm²; it concerns a soil rich in detritus. The water is about 20 cm in depth at the location of the sample taking. Samples were taken over the period from August 1968 until May 1969. The salinity is susceptible to a relatively wide variation. Usually values between 12 promille S and 18 promille S were measured. The maximum measured was 19.03 promille S on 16/12/68 and the minimum measured 8.41 promille S on 5/5/69. According to the system of Venece, 1958, the...

Comparative serology of the marine fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum OMA
Grisez, L.; Ollevier, F.P..
The different serotyping systems, based on thermostable O antigens, reported for Vibrio anguillarum and V. ordalii were compared by quantitative agglutination, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and subsequent silver staining or Western blotting (immunoblotting) of purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), using polyclonal rabbit antisera. The results demonstrate that 16 different serotypes within V. anguillarum (designated 01 to 016) can be distinguished. Each of these serotypes is characterized by a distinct polysaccharide banding pattern, as revealed by silver-stained gels of purified LPS. The comparative analysis allowed a complete alignment of the different stereotypes for the...

The genus Batzella: a chemosystematic problem OMA
Van Soest, R.W.M.; Braekman, J.C.; Faulkner, D.J.; Hajdu, E.; Harper, M.K.; Vacelet, J..
Biogenetically unrelated cyclic guanidine alkaloids and pyrroloquinoline alkaloids have been reported from sponges assigned to the genus Batzella. These sponges have been assigned to this genus because of their possession of a simple complement of thin strongyles in irregular plumoreticulate arrangement. Cyclic guanidine alkaloids were first reported from an alleged axinellid species from the Caribbean, Ptilocaulis aff. P. spiculifer, and subsequently from a second Carribean specimen identified as Ptilocaulis spiculifer and at the same time from a Red Sea poecilosclerid, Hemimycale sp. Closely related compounds were described from a Caribbean specimen identified...

Vibrios associated with routine productions of Brachionus plicatilis OMA
Verdonck, L.; Grisez, L.; Sweetman, E.; Minkoff, G.; Sorgeloos, P.; Ollevier, F.P.; Swings, J..
Surveys for bacteriological analysis were carried out in 1990-1991 in two different marine fish hatcheries located in Greece and northern Spain. Samples were taken from 12 different routine productions of Brachionus plicatilis before and during enrichment. Isolates were characterized by whole cell fatty acid methyl ester analysis and by BIOLOG metabolic fingerprinting. Vibrio anguillarum and/or Vibrio alginolyticus were dominant Vibrio species in the rotifer samples taken after enrichment and rinsing, before being delivered to the fish larvae. None of the Vibrio anguillarum strains belonged to the pathogenic serotypes for juvenile and adult fish.

Effect of dietary essential fatty acids on egg quality and larviculture success of the greasy grouper (Epinephelus tauvina F.): preliminary results OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Lavens, P.; Chao, T.M.; Chou, R.; Sorgeloos, P..
In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (Epinephelus tauvina) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated.
