In addition to the conventional auction method of cattle marketing, some alternative marketing arrangements include sale by private treaty, video auction, retained ownership, and use of strategic alliances. This study finds that 91% of Louisiana producers use conventional auctions, while 39% use other types of marketing arrangements. The most heavily used alternative marketing arrangement is private treaty, at 26%. Those producers using alternative marketing arrangements tend to be larger, have heavier weaning weights, have more diverse farming operations, be younger, have greater contact with their county extension agents, and depend less on income from off-farm sources. |

A simulation model was constructed to ascertain the extent of benefits from spatial diversification when an intensive form of use is assumed for the additional (alluvial) land. Although expected profit increased and coefficient of variation decreased, the return to additional capital was only 2.7 per cent. Spatial diversification successfully overcomes winter-spring feed uncertainties, but appears economically doubtful under present assumptions. Some alternatives and modifications are suggested which, although untested, might improve the economics of diversification. |

This paper presents estimates of the economic and demographic effects on the demand for steak, roast, and ground beef. Using an almost ideal demand system, the results indicate that demand is inelastic for steak and ground beef, elastic for roast, cross-price effects are significant, and all goods are Hicks-Allen substitutes. The impact of certain demographic effects, such as household size, region, tenancy, and ethnic origin, was generally quite significant. Other demographic variables, such as employment status, shopper, and occupation, were generally not significant. |
