Brazil on the spot: Rio+20, sustainability and a role for science Rev. Bras. Bot.
Scarano,Fabio Rubio; Silva,José Maria Cardoso da; Guimarães,André Loubet; Raik,Daniela; Boltz,Frederick.
Rio +20, or the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development, will take place at the end of this month of June 2012. In this paper, our central argument is that Brazil, as the host of Rio+20, has a historic opportunity to make the conference a success and take a decisive step in becoming a world leader in the shift from the traditional development paradigm to a new, sustainable development paradigm. To do that, Brazil will have to resolve a paradox: on the one hand the country has modern legislation and world class science, and on the other hand very poor social and environmental decision-making in recent times. In this column, we examine the green economy as a trajectory that leads to sustainable development and describe some pilot experiences at...

The costs of soil erosion Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Telles,Tiago Santos; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
The aim of this study was a survey of the estimated costs of soil erosion, an issue of fundamental importance in view of the current worldwide discussions on sustainability. A list was drawn up of research papers on erosion (on-site and off-site effects) and their respective costs. The estimates indicate the amount of resources spent in the process of soil degradation, raising a general awareness of the need for soil conservation. On-site costs affect the production units directly, while off-site costs create a burden borne by the environment, economy and society. In addition, estimating the costs of soil erosion should be effective to alert the agricultural producers, society and government for the need for measures that can be implemented to bring...

Habitat Features and Strategies for the Sustainable Development in the Alentejo Region Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Fragoso,Rui Manuel de Sousa.
The unfavoured Portuguese regions have a level of life and economic growth rates lower than favoured regions, and the mean of European Union and hence have less entrepreneurial activities. The adoption of strategies of sustainable development driven by entrepreneurship phenomena could be a viable solution. Thus, the likely relationships between entrepreneurship and regional features were described, and sources of entrepreneurship opportunities for strategies based on the own regional resources and competitive advantages were identified. The paper concludes that, for the Alentejo region, some habitat variables should be reinforced for promoting entrepreneurship and sustainable development, and the main opportunities are related to the economic activities...

Valuation and assessment of soil erosion costs Scientia Agricola
Telles,Tiago Santos; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci; Souza,Luiz Gustavo Antonio de; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima.
Soil is an essential natural resource for humans and an important part of the environment. However, soil is often used and managed inappropriately, causing its erosion and degradation, with concomitantly negative social, political and economic impacts. This study aimed to discuss sustainable development; and losses and problems caused by soil erosion, and to suggest a model for assessing erosion costs. The relevance of economic models for costing soil erosion is stressed. Based on an economic theory, it presents a procedure for assessing economic costs of soil erosion, centered on the on-site and off-site costs that are generated. The physical processes of soil erosion are described and their economic effects reviewed, drawing on theoretical and empirical...

Design of sustainable supply chains for the agrifood sector: a holistic research framework CIGR Journal
Iakovou, Eleftherios; Vlachos, Dimitrios; Achillas, Charisios; Anastasiadis, Foivos.
Agrifood sector is one of the most important economic and political areas within the European Union, with key implications for sustainability such as the fulfillment of human needs, the support of employment and economic growth, and its impact on the natural environment.  Growing environmental, social and ethical concerns and increased awareness of the impacts of the agrifood sector have led to increased pressure by all involved supply chain stakeholders, while at the same time the European Union has undertaken a number of relevant regulatory interventions.  This paper aims to present a methodological framework for the design of green supply chains for the agrifood sector.  The framework aims towards the optimization of the agrifood supply chain design,...

A science framework (SF) for agricultural sustainability Anais da ABC (AABC)
AHMED,FERDOUS; AL-AMIN,ABUL Q.; MASUD,MUHAMMAD M.; KARI,FATIMAH; MOHAMAD,ZEEDA.
The significance of Science Framework (SF) to date is receiving more acceptances all over the world to address agricultural sustainability. The professional views, however, advocate that the SF known as Mega Science Framework (MSF) in the transitional economies is not converging effectively in many ways for the agricultural sustainability. Specially, MSF in transitional economies is mostly incapable to identify barriers in agricultural research, inadequate to frame policy gaps with the goal of strategizing the desired sustainability in agricultural technology and innovation, inconsistent in finding to identify the inequities, and incompleteness to rebuild decisions. Therefore, this study critically evaluates the components of MSF in transitional economies...

Stonemeal of amazon soils with sediments from reservoirs: a case study of remineralization of the tucuruí degraded land for agroforest reclamation Anais da ABC (AABC)
THEODORO,SUZI H.; LEONARDOS,OTHON H.; ROCHA,EDUARDO; MACEDO,IRIS; REGO,KLEYSSON G..
This study suggests the employment of accumulated sediments in the reservoir of Tucuruí (Pará /Brazil) to remineralize the surrounding degraded soils. The approach was based on the principles of stonemeal technology. It suggests that the soil can be rejuvenated by crushed rocks rich in macro and micronutrients. Removal of the sediments for agricultural use will bring benefits to family farmers and increase the life cycle of the reservoir and, therefore, energy generation. Geochemical data on retained sediments, soils and rocks in the area of influence of the reservoir were evaluated regarding nutrient transport mechanisms and soil-fertility potential. Results show that sediments from the reservoir contain nutrients levels at least one order of magnitude...

Estimation of aerial biomass of Lychnophora ericoides (Mart.) BABT
Andrade,Brunno Santana de; Hay,John Du Vall.
For sustainable use of native plant species, knowledge of the amount of harvestable biomass is necessary. This study presents data on allometric relationships of Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Asteraceae), an extractive resource in the Cerrado region of Brazil. On the Fazenda Água Limpa (15º 45'S, 47º 57'W) of the Universidade de Brasilia, 38 individuals of this species were measured in the field, the parts above ground were harvested, separated into components and oven dried. The best regression equations to estimate biomass were geometric and the best fit was between total height and total biomass (r² = 0.923). The economically useful portions, the leaves and branches accounted for approximately 20% of total above ground dry weight, but when used as the...

An Innovative Vessel for Research Studies at Amazon as a Potential Support for Sustainable Development and Conservation of the Region BABT
Meliande,Luís Otávio Vieira; Soares Filho,Afrânio de Amorim Francisco; Fonseca,Marcus Vinícius de Araújo; Miranda,Fernando Pellon de.
This study proposes an innovative and demonstrably necessary vessel intended for the research and logistic support of scientific or non-scientific activities in the Amazon, designed in accordance with the environmental and geographical requirements and characteristics of the region (possibly applicable to other similar hydrographic basins). The study also demonstrates the existence of a demand (actual and potential) for the infrastructure proposed. This infrastructure could subsidize the efforts devoted to the expansion of knowledge about the region, since many areas of science, institutions and business segments could benefit from its implementation. The access to knowledge could attract private investments with the perspective of developing business...

Threatening Fishing, the Failure to Pursue Sustainable Development Strategies BABT
Chamanara,Vahid; Kamrani,Ehsan; Zahirinia,Mostafa; Mânez,Kathleen Schwerdtner.
ABSTRACT Increasingly burden of inhabitants growing in coastlines has led to damage in various mangrove expanses. Though these regions play as fish nursery grounds and are actual vital in stock assessments, there is no precise and state-of-the-art accessible information about them. Herein the catch records in the Qeshm island marine protected area (MPA) was studied by means of 11 stake-nets. Thoroughly, 81 specimens of 69 genera and 63 families were caught, which the main stream of them were discards. The salable fish were undeveloped which were frequently undersized in comparison with LM50. For Pampus argenteus as well, lone 15.3% of the caught those remained in the permissible catch size. Henceforward, this catch conformation would be there an impending...
