Seasonal variability of planktonic copepods (Copepoda: Crustacea) in a tropical estuarine region in Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Dias,Cristina de Oliveira; Araujo,Adriana Valente de; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa.
The Caravelas River estuary and adjacent coastal region were studied during the rainy and dry seasons of 2003-2004 to assess the copepod community structure. Abiotic and biotic parameters were measured, and the total density, frequency and percentage of copepod taxa were determined for each sampling period. Copepod densities showed significant differences between sampling periods, with higher densities in the rainy seasons (Mean: 90,941.80 ind.m-3; S.D.: 26,364.79). The sampling stations located to the north and south, in the coastal region adjacent to the Caravelas River estuary presented the lowest copepod density values. The copepod assemblage was composed mainly of estuarine and estuarine/coastal copepods. The seasonal variations in temperature and...

The copepod assemblage (Copepoda: Crustacea) on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Camamu Bay, northeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Dias,Cristina de Oliveira; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa.
The copepod assemblage on the inner continental shelf adjacent to the coastal system of Camamu Bay (state of Bahia, Brazil) is described in relation to hydrographic conditions, during the wet and dry seasons of 2004. The zooplankton samples were obtained in vertical tows using a net with 200 µm mesh size. Temperature and salinity were measured, and the total density, frequency and percentage occurrence of the copepod taxa were determined for each sampling period. The highest densities were observed at the entrance of Camamu Bay (up to 7.473 ind.m-3), and the lowest on the adjacent inner continental shelf south of Camamu Bay (less than 500 ind.m-3). A total of 57 copepod taxa were identified. Paracalanus quasimodo Bowman, 1971, Subeucalanus pileatus...

Horizontal and vertical distribution of mesozooplankton species richness and composition down to 2,300 m in the southwest Atlantic Ocean Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bonecker,Sérgio L.C.; Araujo,Adriana V. de; Carvalho,Pedro F. de; Dias,Cristina de O.; Fernandes,Luiz F.L.; Migotto,Alvaro E.; Oliveira,Otto M.P. de.
We describe the species richness, distribution and composition of mesozooplankton over the continental shelf and slope, and in the water masses in the Campos Basin, southwest Atlantic Ocean. We analyzed the mesozooplankton from two oceanographic cruises (rainy and dry seasons, 2009) with samples taken in five different water masses from the surface to 2,300 m depth. In the Subsurface Water (SS), in both sampling periods, more species were recorded over the slope (rainy: 100; dry: 128) than the continental shelf (rainy: 97; dry: 104). Over the slope, species richness decreased with increasing depth: the highest values were observed in the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), and the lowest values in the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), in both sampling...

Species assemblages of zooplanktonic crustaceans in mountain shallow ponds of Chile (Parque Cañi) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ríos,Patricio De los; Roa,Guido.
Even though the Chilean lakes are characterized by their oligotrophy, a transition from oligotrophy to mesotrophy, due human intervention, has been reported in some lakes. Nevertheless, there are still some pristine and unpolluted small lakes and ponds in mountain zones, free of human intervention and surrounded by native forests. Nine unpolluted, oligotrophic and pristine water bodies located in Cañi Park, a mountain zone with altitudes between 1000 to 1500 m a.s.l and forests where Nothofagus dombeyi, N. pumilio and Araucaria araucana predominate, were studied. For each sampled lake, zooplankton was collected and environmental parameters were obtained (conductivity, total dissolved solids, and chlorophyll concentration). A null model of species...

Estimating cyclopoid copepod species richness and geographical distribution (Crustacea) across a large hydrographical basin: comparing between samples from water column (plankton) and macrophyte stands Rev. Bras. Zool.
Perbiche-Neves,Gilmar; Rocha,Carlos E.F. da; Nogueira,Marcos G..
Species richness and geographical distribution of Cyclopoida freshwater copepods were analyzed along the "La Plata" River basin. Ninety-six samples were taken from 24 sampling sites, twelve sites for zooplankton in open waters and twelve sites for zooplankton within macrophyte stands, including reservoirs and lotic stretches. There were, on average, three species per sample in the plankton compared to five per sample in macrophytes. Six species were exclusive to the plankton, 10 to macrophyte stands, and 17 were common to both. Only one species was found in similar proportions in plankton and macrophytes, while five species were widely found in plankton, and thirteen in macrophytes. The distinction between species from open water zooplankton and...

Larval and adult density of the porcellanid crab Petrolisthes armatus (Anomura: Porcellanidae) in an Amazon estuary, northern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Oliveira,Danielly Brito de; Silva,Dalila Costa; Martinelli-Lemos,Jussara Moretto.
Petrolisthes armatus (Gibbes, 1850) is a porcellanid crab with a wide geographical distribution. In the present study we analyzed variations in the abundance of P. armatus adults and larvae over an annual cycle in the Marapanim estuary of the Amazon coastal zone, in the northeastern portion of the state of Pará, Brazil. Particularly, we focused on the presence of ovigerous females and timing of larval release, with the aim of elucidating reproductive patterns in a tropical estuarine system. The mean density of P. armatus larvae (zoea I and II) correlated positively with the salinity of the shallow waters of the estuary, whereas the abundance of adults correlated with the salinity registered in water samples collected from the benthic environment. There was...

Depth-selection patterns and diel vertical migration of Daphnia ambigua (Crustacea: Cladocera) in lake El Plateado RChHN
RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO; ZÚÑIGA,LUIS R..
Eutrophic temperate and sub-tropical lakes often exhibit a marked vertical structure during the warm season that involves important spatial differences of physical, chemical and biological variables. Therefore, zooplankton is exposed to a highly heterogeneous environment in the vertical dimension. In this work, We analyze the depth-distribution of the cladoceran Daphnia ambigua in the eutrophic, monomictic lake El Plateado at midday and midnight, along with its relationship with the vertical distribution of water temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration. We also attempt to define whether or not this population exhibits a diel vertical migration. The results show significant changes in the day/night vertical distribution of D. ambigua during its...

Parent-to-offspring transfer of sublethal effects of copper exposure: Metabolic rate and life-history traits of Daphnia RChHN
FERNÁNDEZ-GONZÁLEZ,MAURICIO A; GONZÁLEZ-BARRIENTOS,JAVIER; CARTER,MAURICIO J; RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO.
In ecological communities, pollution driven perturbations exert immediate effects on sensitive individuals, but these effects may be transmitted among interacting organisms and spread over the community through several paths. This makes the assessment and prediction of ecological consequences of pollution difficult. The propagation of perturbation effects among organisms can be horizontal among organisms that coexist in space and time, and vertical among organism that belong to different generations. The latter process is poorly understood, in particular in planktonic organisms facing metal pollution. In this study we evaluate the vertical transfer of effects driven by sublethal copper stress on the heartbeat rate, somatic growth and fertility of Daphnia...

Live and formulated diet evaluation through initial growth and survival of jundiá larvae, Rhamdia quelen Scientia Agricola
Carneiro,Paulo César Falanghe; Mikos,Jorge Daniel; Schorer,Marianne; Oliveira Filho,Paulo Roberto Campagnoli; Bendhack,Fabiano.
Live diet (LD) dependence and the lack of suitable formulated diets (FD) are major constraints for the expansion of larviculture of many fish species. The low digestibility and nutritional quality of FD are factors that might explain their failure as a stand-alone starter food. To determine whether FD in combination with LD (zooplankton) may efficiently increase larval growth and survival of jundiá (Rhamdia quelen), when compared to fish fed by either types of diet alone, jundiá larvae (5.57 mm; 1.41 mg) were initially stocked into 12 10-L aquaria (100 larvae per aquarium). Replicate groups (n=4) were fed ad libitum one of the three diets for 20 (when fed FD) or 48 days (when fed LD or the combined diets). Larvae fed FD alone presented significantly lower...

Diel changes in embryonic maturation in two species of marine cladocerans in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Zoologia
Marazzo,Andrea; Valentin,Jean L..
Two species of marine cladocerans, Penilia avirostris Dana, 1852 and Evadne tergestina Claus, 1877 were collected in thirteen samples at a fixed station in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro (30-meter depth) by means of vertical tows with a 200 µm mesh size net at different times from September 12th to 15th, 1995. The parthenogenetic females of Evadne tergestina bore mature embryos (with pigmented eye) only in the samples collected at night, whereas Penilia avirostris at any time of day. This phenomenon was interpreted based on the greater visibility of the Evadne tergestina brood: one of the benefits for embryo maturing during the darkness period would be a decrease of predation on gravid females.

A NEW SPECIES OF Halicyclops (Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Halicyclopinae) FROM AN ESTUARINE SYSTEM OF THE CARIBBEAN COAST OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
FUENTES-REINÉS,Juan M.; SUÁREZ-MORALES,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT Plankton samples obtained from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, an extensive estuarine system in northern Colombia, yielded adult male and female specimens of an undescribed halicyclopine cyclopid copepod of the genus Halicyclops. Cyclopid copepods are frequently found in freshwater and transitional habitats. Members of the subfamily Halicyclopinae are chiefly brackish water forms with a few freshwater species. The new species described herein is assignable to the group of species "F" of Halicyclops (sensu Pesce, 2018) with a 2333 exopodal spine formula. Currently, this group contains five species and one subspecies. Halicyclopsgutierrezi sp. n. can be distinguished from its known congeners by the absence of an anal operculum, the relative...

Species composition of testate amoebae in Lake Monte Alegre, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil Biological Sciences
Mousinho, Lucas Pessanha; Silva, Mariana Lessa Carneiro da; Arrieira, Rodrigo Leite; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto.
We aimed to perform the first survey of testate amoebae community composition in Lake Monte Alegre at São Paulo state, and contribute to mitigate the taxonomic impediment regarding the diversity of testate amoebae in Brazil. Samplings were performed in 20 sampling sites within the lake, in the limnetic and littoral regions in April 2015, using a 58 µm-meshplankton net. We identified 20 taxa of testate amoebae belonging to four families: Arcellidae (8 taxa), Centropyxidae (4 taxa), Difflugiidae (7 taxa) and Lesquereusiidae (2 taxa). The littoral region showed the highest number of taxa (n = 20), whereas in the limnetic region 11 taxa were registered. Therefore, our results evidenced the importance of testate amoebae in aquatic systems, and that further...

Geographical spread of the invasive species Kellicottia longispina (Kellicott, 1879) and K. bostoniensis (Rousselet, 1908): A scientometric approach Biological Sciences
Bomfim, Francieli de Fátima; Mantovano, Tatiane; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Palazzo, Fabiana; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo.
Processes related to biological invasion of inland waters have become a major issue due to the increasing number of cases associated with the potential effects of invasions. Kellicottia bostoniensis and K. longispina are rotifer species originating from North America and have become invasive in several continents. In this sense, this study carried out a scientometric analysis to analyze the geographical distribution and identify patterns of occurrence as well as to fill gaps on the knowledge of these species. The survey was based on articles indexed in databases from 1896 to 2014. There is a greater scientific knowledge of these species in the temperate region, and these are present in many different environments. In Brazil, there is a very small number of...

Euphausiacea diversity in a trans-oceanic transect through the South Atlantic Ocean: the first Atlantic record of Thysanopoda astylata Brinton, 1975 Anais da ABC (AABC)
MUXAGATA,ERIK; BARBOSA,CARLA N.; AGOSTINI,VANESSA O..
Abstract: Information about euphausiids in central South Atlantic Ocean is scarce; hence, we investigated species composition and distribution of euphausiids along a longitudinal transect in this region, with an emphasis on Thysanopoda. Zooplankton samples were collected from 44 stations during the first Transatlantic Commission (Brazil–Africa). Euphausiids comprised 21,390 individuals across larval stages (nauplius, calyptopis, and furcilia) and adults. Furcilia and adults were classified to species level when possible, with a total of 19 identified species. Overall, Euphausia species frequency of occurrence and abundance were highest in samples collected near the African coast, while Thysanopada species dominated near the Brazilian coast. Of the...
