In addition to the Survey of the Entomological Fauna in Paraná State, the family Saturniidae was studied in its ecological and faunistic aspects. The material was captured using one light trap installed in eight different sites of the State: Antonina, São José dos Pinhais, Colombo, Ponta Grossa, Telêmaco Borba, Jundiaí do Sul, Guarapuava and Fênix, from October 1986 to September 1987. The total number of specimens and means values of capture were analyzed. Indices of diversity and evenness were used to discuss richness and dominance of species in each locality. Besides using ecological indices, the data were also compared by Clustering Analysts, Principal Coordinate Analysis, Minimum Spanning Tree and Linear Correlation Coefficient. The results were... |

Xylophanes loelia (Druce, 1878), X. libya (Druce, 1878), Hemeroplanes triptolemus (Cramer, 1779), Eumorpha anchemolus (Cramer, 1779), Manduca brasilensis (Jordan, 1911), M. hannibal (Cramer, 1779), Adhemarius... |

In the present paper the authors describe and illustrate a new species of proteocephalidean cestode, Monticellia belavistensis, sp.n., parasite of a freshwater siluriform fish (thorny catfish). Pterodoras granulosus (Valenciennes, 1833), from the Itaipu Reservoir and Paraná River, in the region of Porto Rico. This is the first reference of a proteocephalid in this host. The values of prevalence and mean intensity of infection are given and the life cycle is discussed. |

The structure of the spermatozoon of Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836 was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The spermatic head is rounded and formed by the nucleus containing granular chromatin, firmly packed resulting in a mass extremely electron dense. The acrossome is absent. The midpiece is characterized by the presence of two centrioles, a plasmatic canal, very few vesicles, and several mitochondria (9-10) with aproximately 0.50µm in diameter. The head and the midpiece are aproximately 1.56µm in diameter. The flagellum conforms to the 9 + 0 flagellar pattern near the transition region in its midpiece and is 9 + 2 from there on up to the distal region of the axoneme. The electron density in the A tubules 1, 2, 5 and 6 shows... |

A study of phylogenetic relationships of the genera of Mesembrinellinae and of the species of Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931, on the ground of shared derived character states (synapomorphies) is presented. Resulting the following assumption: Laneella Mello, 1967 presenting sister group relationship with all other Mesembrinellinae, followed by Souzalopesiella Guimarães, 1977, M. peregrina Aldrich, 1922 that was isolated from Mesembrinella Giglio-Tos, 1893. Mesembrinella was considered paraphiletic, its species were judged in changeable positions at the bifurcation point of analysis of Albuquerquea Mello, 1967 with the tricotomic interrelationships of Thompsoniella Guimarães, 1977, Huascaromusca Townsend, 1918 and Eumesembrinella Townsend, 1931. The... |

Euglossine bees are known to be long-distance pollinators in tropical rainforests. But there is controversy concerning to the flight ranges of these bees between forest fragments. In an isolated fragment of Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco, NE Brazil, surrounded by sugarcane monocultures, it was examined if euglossine males leave closed rainforest to collect fragrances. In a straight-line transect leading from forest into a sugarcane plantation, euglossine males were simultaneously captured by scent baits at seven distinct points: inside the forest, forest edge, outside the forest in the sugarcane fields at distances of 10 m, 50 m, 100 m, 250 m and 500 m from the forest edge. A total of 945 euglossine bees of 16 species were recorded. The results... |

The Oweniidae consist of five genera of tubiculous polychaetes occurring in all oceans from tropical topolarareas: Owenia Delle Chiaje, 1842, Myriochele Malmgren, 1867, Galathowenia Kirkegaard, 1959, Myriowenia Hartrnan, 1960 and Myrioglobula Hartrnan, 1967. The group is regarded as monophyletic based on the presence of dense fields of bidentate neuropodial hooks. Fourteen species were submitted to a cladistic analysis in PAUP 3.1.1 with the usage of 19 morphological characters. The taxonomic status of the ingroup taxa could be evaluated and it has been found that: (1) Owenia, Myriowenia and Myrioglobula are monophyletic, and (2) Myriochele, and Galathowenia are both paraphyletic taxa. |
