Ökologische Fischproduktion: Struktur, Entwicklung, Probleme, politischer Handlungsbedarf Organic Eprints

Nitrogen dynamics of organic farming in a crop rotation based on red clover (Trifolium pratense) leys Organic Eprints
Nykänen, Arja.
In agricultural systems which rely on organic sources of nitrogen (N), of which the primary source is biological N fixation (BNF), it is extremely important to use N as efficiently as possible with minimal losses to the environment. The amount of N through BNF should be maximised and the availability of the residual N after legumes should be synchronised to the subsequent plant needs in the crop rotation. Six field experiments in three locations in Finland were conducted in 1994-2006 to determine the productivity and amount of BNF in red clover-grass leys of different ages. The residual effects of the leys for subsequent cereals as well as the N leaching risk were studied by field measurements and by simulation using the CoupModel. N use efficiency (NUE)...

Strategier for ukrudtsbekæmpelse i økologisk vinterhvede Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A..

Ecological Apple Production: a Comparison of Organic and Integrated Apple-growing Organic Eprints
Bertschinger, Lukas; Mouron, Patrik; Dolega, Ewa; Höhn, Heinrich; Holliger, Eduard; Husistein, Alfred; Schmid, Andi; Siegfried, Werner; Widmer, Albert; Zürcher, Matthias; Weibel, Franco.
In 1995, an experiment was planted at Wädenswil for comparing organic and integrated apple production. The overall goal of this experiment was to develop a data set which allows for an objective overall comparison of the two production concepts. Horticultural, ecological and economical traits were looked at. In practical terms, the study should particularly clarify how suitable the two systems are for producing marketable fresh fruit under Swiss conditions. The approach of an on-station comparison with a split-plot design with 3 replicate blocks and the factors “production system” (1st factor) and “variety” (2nd factor) was chosen. Ninety-four percent of Swiss apple acreage is managed according to integrated production, and 5% according to organic...

Organic farming and multicriteria decisions: An economic survey Organic Eprints
Christensen, Tove; Olsen, Søren Bøye; Dubgaard, Alex; Kærgård, N..
Organic food production is a sphere where decision making is multi-facetted and complex. This applies to producers, political decision makers and consumers alike. This paper provides an overview of the economic methods that can aid such multi criteria decision making. We first provide an outline of the many different Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) techniques available and their relative advantages and disadvantages. In addition, theoretical and practical problems related to the use of Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) and MCA respectively are briefly discussed. We then review the MCA literature on case studies on organic farming. Based on this review we provide directional markers for future research where MCA may possibly be applied and adapted in order to...

Erhalt ökologisch wertvoller Grünlandstandorte durch eine Integrierte Festbrennstoff- und Biogasproduktion aus Biomasse (IFBB-Verfahren) Organic Eprints
Richter, M.sc. Felix; Kuschnereit, M.sc. Sara; Graß, Dr. Rüdiger; Fricke, Dipl.-Ing. agr. Thomas; Wachendorf, Prof. Dr. Michael.
As a new utilisation concept for the conservation of ecologically valuable habitats the integrated generation of solid fuel and biogas from biomass (IFBB) was tested on five semi-natural grasslands from typical German mountain areas. Through hydrothermal conditioning and mechanical dehydration grassland silage was separated into a press cake and a press fluid. In anaerobic digestion experiments with press fluids methane yields of 304 to 522 normal litre per kg organic dry matter were obtained within 13 days. The specific methane production was higher and went faster compared to the fermentation of the untreated grassland silage. Elemental analyses of the press cakes showed a significant reduction in compounds detrimental for combustion. The ash...

The Impact of Labor and Hiring Decisions on the Performance of U.S. Organic Farms Organic Eprints
Lohr, Luanne; Park, Timothy.
An increased emphasis on the viability and growth of local food systems which reduce "food miles" has promoted efforts encouraging farmers and processors to sell and distribute food products to local consumers. The elasticity of complementarity is used to predict adjustments in relative wage payments if organic farmers commit to local selling. We use comprehensive U.S. data on organic practices to show that a commitment to local sales leads to lower organic farm incomes. Policies that promote a shift to local sales would lead to decreased use of seasonal workers and higher wages for seasonal workers with smaller adjustments in the wages of year-round workers.

Organic Eprints
Bertuol, Tiago José; Galbiati, Carla; Pereira, Mônica Josene Barbosa; Amaral, Anderson Marques do.

Czech organic farmers’ perception of landscape elements Organic Eprints
Dytrtova, Karolina; Sarapatka, Borivoj.
This paper aims to identify the main aspects of farmers´ motivation to farm organically and their activities relating to changes in landscape composition. Organic farmers’ perceptions of landscape elements were observed through questionnaires completed by 87 farmers in the Czech Republic. The majority of farmers (88.5%) stated that environment-friendly farming practices were the main reason to enter the organic farming system. A large number of farmers (69%) stated that they have problems with some constraining conditions and rules in agri-environmental measures. Regarding the size of farms, small farms were more willing to devote part of their farmland to landscape elements. Respondents who farmed in LFA areas and landscape protected areas mentioned more...

The use of copper seed treatments to control potato late blight in organic farming Organic Eprints
Keil, S.; Benker, Dr. M.; Zellner, Dr. M..
In organic farming potato late blight still is an unsolved problem. Up to now copper fungicides are the only way to control this disease. Delaying the start of the epidemic reduces the need for fungicide usage throughout the growing season. In order to postpone the beginning of the blight epidemic as well as the start of spraying primary stem infections shall be reduced by a copper seed treatment. In field trials these treatments not only reduced primary stem infection but also decreased the number of infected daughter tubers.

Examining root nodule activity on legumes Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun; Hansen, Sissel.
The symbiotic partnership between bacteria and legumes is vital for the supply of biologically fixed nitrogen to soil and plants in organic cropping systems. Perennial clovers in a dense grass clover ley may contribute more than 200 kg nitrogen (N) per ha and year to the cropping system from the second year after sowing. This technical note aims at encouraging farmers to take a closer look at the roots of legumes and become more familiar with the process of nitrogen fixation and its relevance for organic farming. The note provides some key information on biological nitrogen fixation and describes a simple method for examining nitrogen‐fixing root nodules.

Molekulare Analyse der Traubenarchitektur (Verbundvorhaben) Organic Eprints
Zyprian, Eva; Theres, Klaus.

The early days of IFOAM Organic Eprints
Pinschof, Anton.
Around the early 1970s, there was a foreign publicity manager at a famous French weekly magazine [L’Express] who, in the course of her duties, voyaged all over the world visiting clients. This person happened also to be a friend of the Organic agriculture movement in general and of the French association Nature et Progrès in particular. Her favourite sport was hunting down the pioneers of Organic agriculture who had for decades, usually unknown to each other, been doing original work in their very different countries. Karin Mundt was this intrepid hunter; if any obscure pioneers were anywhere near her flight path, she would track them down. Over several years, contacts were made all over the world. Already in Europe, the necessity was evident, if only to...
