WEED FLORA IN A LONG-TERM REDUCED TILLAGE TRIAL, “TILMAN-ORG session” Organic Eprints
Armengot, Laura; Berner, Alfred; Mäder, Paul; Sans, F. Xavier.
Reduced tillage may improve the environmental and economic performance of organic farming. Reducing the intensity of soil tillage decreases the energy consumption and the emission of carbon dioxide, and could increase carbon sequestration (Holland 2004). Reduced tillage also may improve water retention and reduce soil erosion (Berner et al 2008). One of the main drawbacks of the reduced tillage practices is the potential increase of weed infestation and changes in weed species composition, sometimes to the benefit of species which are more difficult to control, such as perennial and grass species (Peigné et al 2007; Teasdale et al 2007; Sans et al 2011). Organic farmers commonly keep weeds under control by ploughing and by post-emergence mechanical...

Udder health at a Swedish research farm with both organic and conventional dairy cow management Organic Eprints
Fall, Nils; Emanuelson, Ulf; Martinsson, Kjell; Jonsson, Simon.
Our aim was to compare udder health in groups of organically and conventionally managed cows, using data from a longitudinal study in a Swedish dairy-research farm. Management of the groups was identical except for feed composition and the feeding regimen. Our dataset included all lactating cows calving from 1 September 1990 to 31 August 2001 (145 organically and 151 conventionally managed cows). Udder health was assessed by the geometric average somatic-cell count (SCC) within 150 days after calving, by the number of monthly SCC tests >200,000 cells/ml within 150 days after calving and by presence of lactations with veterinary-treated cases of clinical mastitis. The effect of animal group was analysed by multivariable linear, Poisson and...

Improving the quality and safety of organic and low input foods and maximizing the benefits to consumers and producers Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Leifert, Carlo.
‘Improving quality and safety and reduction of cost in the European organic and 'low input' supply chains' (QLIF) is an Integrated Project under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission which started in March 2004 and will end in February 2009. After three years of research by 31 QLIF partners, the scientific data on on the benefits of the system approach used in organic and ‘low input’ agriculture has expanded considerably. At the same time the project has developed an array of technological innovations that are applicable to a wide range of food production systems and novel approaches for whole food chain management. During the 3rd QLIF Congress held at the University of Hohenheim, Germany, in March 2007, these results were discussed in...

In den Familiengärten ist Bio nicht gleich Bio Organic Eprints
Jahrl, Ingrid.

Pfiffner, Lukas; Balmer, Oliver.

Organic Farming in Wales 1998 - 2003 Organic Eprints
Lampkin, Nic; Powell, Jane.
In 1998 Ron Davies MP, the then Secretary of State for Wales, established three industry working groups to develop action plans for the dairy, red meat and organic farming sectors in Wales. With the publication of the Organic Sector Action Plan in March 1999, the working group was restructured to form the Organic Strategy Group. In the four years since the publication of the action plan, there has been significant progress in the development of the organic sector in Wales. Organic production has increased, established organic producer groups and processing, distribution and retailing businesses have thrived, and many new businesses and initiatives have been established, bringing a greater business, social and cultural diversity to the organic community in...

Mr Carbon Farming Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Michael and Louisa Kiely founded Australia’s Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006. It is now often abbreviated to the Carbon Coalition. The intention is to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits that they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. Is soil carbon the new cash crop? asks Kiely. He speaks with the zeal of an evangelist and calls himself a ‘carbon farmer’. “Carbon farming is not a new practice. It is a new way to describe a collection of techniques which can increase soil organic carbon in agricultural land ... It’s about changing the way we farm ...” says Kiely. Carbon farming is managing the land to sequester carbon and farming techniques that can meet this...

Effect of heat stress and feeding phosphorus levels on pig electron transport chain gene expression Organic Eprints
Weller, M. M. D. C. A.; Alebrante, L.; Campos, P. H. R. F.; Saraiva, A.; Silva, B. A. N.; Donzele, J. L.; Oliveira, R. F. M.; Silva, F.F.; Gasparino, E.; Lopes, P.S-; Guimarães, S.E.F..
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature and different levels of available phosphorus (aP) on the expression of nine genes encoding electron transport chain proteins in the Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle of pigs. Two trials were carried out using 48 high-lean growth pigs from two different growth phases: from 15 to 30 kg (phase 1) and from 30 to 60 kg (phase 2). Pigs from growth phase 1 were fed with three different levels of dietary aP (0.107%, 0.321% or 0.535%) and submitted either to a thermoneutral (24°C and RH at 76%) or to a heat stress (34°C and RH at 70%) environment. Pigs from growth phase 2 were fed with three different levels of dietary aP (0.116%, 0.306% or 0.496%) and submitted either to a thermoneutral (22ºC and RH...

Assessment and comparisons of the environmental, economic and social performances of organic and conventional cattle systems Organic Eprints
Pavie, Jérome; Chambaut, H.; Madeline, L.; Experton, Catherine.
The main objective of "CedABio" was to estimate the environmental and socioeconomic benefits anticipated in the bovine farming systems adopting an organic production mode. Beyond some obvious advantages, the goal was to measure and ascertain the real contributions of a change to organic farming for the dairy and beef farms. To lead this assessment, strong and technically accessible indicators were selected, tested, and then looked for in 144 livestock farms, located in varied contexts to take into account territorial diversity. Half of the farms were in organic mode. Their results are compared with the other half producing in conventional mode, situated in the same zones, with similar structures. The results and the observations performed in this...

A field trial on the effects of pure sodium propionate and a combination with herbal extracts on short term development of subclinical ketosis Organic Eprints
Dorn, Katharina; Leiber, Florian; Sundrum, Albert; Holinger, Mirjam; Mayer, Philipp; Walkenhorst, Michael.
While glucogenic substances in ketosis prevention are commonly used, there is a lack of clinical studies about the effectiveness of ketosis therapy in particular by means of sodium propionate and herbal extracts. Fresh cows between 5 and 50 days in milk of 25 Swiss and German dairy farms were tested weekly for ketone bodies in blood. From 283 cows, 121 (42.8%) exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l blood-β-hydroxybutyrate (BBHB). Thereof 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments on each farm. Treatment SP-H was composed of sodium propionate (120 g per application) and an aqueous extract of seven herbs (13.5 g drug equivalent per application), treatment SP comprised pure sodium propionate (120 g per application) and treatment PL was a placebo. All...

Setting and reviewing standards for organic farming Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
One of the cornerstones of organic farming is the fact that it is governed by clear standards which are legally protected in many parts of the world, but there is concern that the current certification system does not fully safeguard the objectives and principles of the movement and encourage further improvements in sustainability. The chapter provides a brief history of organic standard development, and introduces the values and principles of organic farming that have guided this process. The chapter discusses advantages and disadvantages of the different types of rules currently used to achieve common objectives, such as prohibitions or obligations to use specified inputs and practices. The chapter explores whether trends in sustainability assessment...

Technical Efficiency in Organic Farming: an Application on Italian Cereal Farms using a Parametric Approach Organic Eprints
Madau, Fabio.
A stochastic frontier production model was applied to estimate technical efficiency in a sample of Italian organic and conventional cereal farms. The main purpose was to assess which production technique revealed higher efficiency. Statistical tests on the pool sample model suggested that differences between the two cultivation methods were significant from a technological viewpoint. Separate analyses of two sub-samples (93 and 138 observations for organic and conventional farms, respectively) found that conventional farms were significantly more efficient than organic farms, with respect to their specific technology (0.892 vs. 0.825). This implies that organic (conventional) cereal farmers could increase their income to 99.19 €/ha (40.95 €/ha). Analysis...

Wheat trials networks for determining characters for organic breeding Organic Eprints
Rolland, B.; Al Rifai, M.; Bataillon, P.; Fontaine, L.; Gardet, O.; Oury, F. X..
The objectives of the French national institute of agronomy (INRA) cereals programme are to evaluate genetic material from breeding programmes for low input systems (high disease and lodging resistance, low seeding rate, good response to low level of nutrients, standard quality) including organic conditions. The aim of the study is to define important agronomic characteristics of cultivar adapted to organic farming. Despite some relation with agronomical performances in low input system, weeds competitiveness, productivity and baking quality are specific in organic farming. Productivity and baking quality are linked to nutrient acquisition ability: nitrogen uptake and nitrogen-use-efficiency. The selection of new lines based on weed competition and N...

Lokalisering af økologiske jordbrug sker ikke jævnt hen over landet Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.

Regional marketing: A summary of research conducted under the German Federal Programme for Organic Agriculture and other forms of Sustainable Agriculture Organic Eprints
ANON, AN.
Since 2002, the federal research programme for organic agriculture has supported research projects on soil fertility. Research projects at the beginning studied specific subject areas such as comparison of various mulch materials, nutrient mobilisation (especially phosphorus), humus balance and soil erosion. This addressed gaps especially in methods in organic practice, where data acquired from conventional agriculture are not applicable. From 2008, the research on soil fertility significantly increased and there was a special focus on interdisciplinary systems approaches. The joint research project on the management of soil fertility in organic farming, for example, examined a number of factors that interact in this field, such as tillage and soil...
