Case study factsheet - Bioregion Mühlviertel (Austria) Organic Eprints
Furtschegger, Christoph; Schermer, Markus.
Most local organic market chains have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume, and mainstream large-scale market chains have inherent difficulties in securing and advancing organic values. The project “Healthy Growth: from niche to volume with integrity and trust” investigated a range of successful mid-scale organic value chains in order to learn how they are able to combine volume and values, and to use this knowledge to support the further development of organic businesses, networks and initiatives. Research teams from ten European countries contributed with 20 case studies. More information and documentation can be found at: www.healthygrowth.eu

THE EFFICIENCY OF BIO PRODUCTION IN ROMANIA Organic Eprints
SABAU, PH-D STUDENT MARIUS MIRCEA; MIHAI, UNIV. PROFESSOR PH-D GHEORGHE; FUNAR, UNIV. PROFESSOR PH-D SABINA.
This is a study related to organic agriculture efficiency in Romania. The study made in the year of 2004 intended to assess the structure and production’s level on this field of agriculture. As resulted following this research the efficiency (Yields/ha)in the field of organic production is not less than conventional efficiency. In a way surprisingly is the conclusion that the efficiency (Yields/ha) is not increasing on bigger cultivated surfaces.

How organic farmers practice conservation agriculture in Europe Organic Eprints
Peigne, Joséphine; Casagrande, Marion; Payet, Vincent; David, Christophe; Sans, F. Xavier; Blanco-Moreno, José M.; Cooper, Julia; Gascoyne, Kate; Antichi, Daniele; Bàrberi, Paolo; Bigongiali, Federica; Surböck, Andreas; Kranzler, Andreas; Beechman, Annelies; Willekens, Koen; Luik, Anne; Matt, Darja; Grosse, Meike; Heß, Jürgen; Clerc, Maurice; Dierauer, Hansueli; Mäder, Paul.
The interest of organic farmers in adopting conservation agriculture principles, including minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotation has been growing since the early 2000s. However, currently there is no network for organic farmers practicing conservation agriculture, and a lack of knowledge on how organic farmers implement conservation agriculture in practice. Consequently, few technical references are available for organic farmers when they start applying conservation agriculture practices, in particular on controlling weeds without the use of herbicides. The main objectives of this study were: (1) to explore the diversity of conservation agriculture techniques (i.e., reduced tillage, no-tillage and green manures) practiced among...

Effects of a saponin fraction extracted from Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and two commercially available saponins on sex ratio and gonad histology of Nile tilapa fry, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) Organic Eprints
Stadtlander, T.; Levavi-Sivan, B.; Kerem, Z.; Dweik, H.; Qutob, M.; Abu-Lafi, S.; Francis, G.; Focken, U.; Becker, K..
Over three million tonnes (t) of tilapia, mostly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L.), are produced annually making it the second most abundantly produced freshwater fish (FAO, 2010). Tilapia are mouthbreeders that often produce stunted populations under pond conditions; one means of prevention is to produce all-male fish with the additional advantage that males usually grow faster than females. All-male populations can be achieved by supplementing feed with androgens such as 17-α-Methyltestosterone (MT) during days 10–25 post-hatch (Pandian and Sheela, 1995). However, MT is considered to be carcinogenic (Velazquez and Alter, 2004), and Hulak et al. (2008) also showed that effluents of systems in which carp were fed diets containing MT caused...

Wirksamkeit einer Behandlungsmethode zur Vorbereitung von Rindern auf Transport und Schlachtung und deren Auswirkung auf Verhalten, Blutparameter und Fleischqualität Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna; Leiber, Florian; Hillmann, Edna; Spengler Neff, Anet.

Hann, Dr. Patrick; Kromp, Dr. Bernhard.
The broad-leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius) is a widely distributed weed of cultivated grasslands. Since the dock leaf beetle (Gastrophysa viridula) can defoliate docks extensively, if occurring in sufficient high densities, it is considered to be a potential part of a biocontrol strategy against R. obtusifolius. Our study aimed at investigating the influence of precipitation on the distribution of G. viridula. For that, 635 questionnaires were sent out to organic farmers and surveys were conducted on 39 farms in Lower Austria. The results showed G. viridula preferring regions with sufficient precipitation. These observations confirmed laboratory results reported in literature and should be considered in a concept for the enhancement of dock beetle...

Bundesprogramm Ökologischer Landbau (BÖL): Cluster Wissensmanagement- Beratung Organic Eprints
The Federal Organic Farming Scheme (FOFS) This scheme is a temporary funding source (2002 – 2007/2008) especially to support the whole organic farming sector (incl. research) in Germany. In the summer of 2001, the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture commissioned a project team comprised of representatives from associations and science and headed by the Federal Agricultural Research Centre to develop a proposal for a package of measures to foster organic farming in Germany. A hearing of representatives from trade and industry, associations, consultancy, science and administration laid the foundation for the team's work. Based on this work, the Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture Renate Künast decided to...

Landpacht in Deutschland – Herausforderungen und Empfehlungen für den Ökosektor Organic Eprints
Schmidtner, Eva; Lippert, Christian; Dabbert, Stephan.
This work summarizes the main findings of a workshop conducted at the Universität Hohenheim in February 2014 with the aim to develop and discuss supporting measures for organic farmers who are willing to (continue to) rent agricultural land. Surprisingly, only a few organic-farming specific challenges could be identified in the German land rental market. As supporting measures for organic farmers the participants suggested (i) to adapt (e.g., the time frame of) governmental support such as agri-environmental payments, (ii) to develop a positive image of organic farming at the regional level (e.g., via information at the organic field) and (iii) to systematically improve the relationship between landlord and organic tenant.

Verlängerte Nutzungsdauer von Legehennen im Biolandbau Organic Eprints
Zeltner, Esther.
