Miljø- og klimavennlig melkeproduksjon. Inspirasjon fra seks melkeproduksjonsbruk. Organic Eprints
Hansen, Sissel; Bergslid, Ildri (Rose) Kristine.

Contamination of oilseed rape varieties by pollen and seeds Organic Eprints
Simonsen, Vibeke; Damgaard, Christian; Kjellsson, Gösta.
Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is a common crop in Denmark and mainly cultivated for its content of oil used for food and feed. The species is often genetically modified (GM), e.g. to herbicide tolerance or insect resistance. Spread of the inserted genes is likely to occur not only to the species itself, but also to its close relatives. The study showed a significant difference between phenotypes in the certified seeds and phenotypes in plants and in seeds in the field. The reason for this might be the presence of OSR volunteers from a previous crop surviving in the soil seed bank. This type of contamination is affected by e.g., harvest and post-harvest handling procedures (Fargue et al., 2003) and can consequently be reduced. More studies on...

Intercropping of oilseeds and faba beans Organic Eprints
Kießling, Daniela; Köpke, Prof. Dr. Ulrich.
Intercrops are considered as less susceptible to pests and diseases and may inhibit weeds more efficiently resulting in enhanced yields and profitability. N2 fixation of legumes is an important nitrogen (N) input factor of Organic Farming systems and results in partly unused plant available soil N (PAN) in sole cropped faba beans. Simultaneously cultivated oilseeds may function as sinks for PAN and enhance biodiversity with all positive aspects. In this respect we investigated several oilseeds intercropped with faba beans at different row distances. Depending on row distance we analysed e.g. the use of soil nutrients and land equivalent ratio (LER). Intercropped oilseeds depleted PAN between FB rows significantly in early development. In 2007 yield...

The impact of nitrogen in red clover and lucerne swards on the subsequent spring wheat Organic Eprints
Kadziuliene, Z.; Sarunaite, L.; Kadziulis, L..
The red clover and lucerne swards and their accumulated nitrogen (N) in residues can be useful tool in organic arable systems. Spring wheat grain yield was affected by red clover/ryegrass and lucerne/ryegrass swards and was significantly higher than that after ryegrass sward, except for lucerne/ryegrass sward after cover crop barley for whole crop. Protein content in wheat was sufficient for the grain to be used for food production. These results indicate that red clover and lucerne can contribute to the intensification of spring wheat growing in organic farming, not only by increasing yields, but also by improving quality.

Concepts for a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of a new more biobased economy in rural production landscapes Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, I.T.; Gylling, M.; Dejgaard, J.; Dubgaard, Alex; Kjeldsen, Chris; Hermansen, J.E.; Turner, K.G.; Christen, Ben; Andersen, P.S..
This study presents a new approach to model the biophysical potentials for increased biomass harvest in Denmark, and a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of the socio-economic and environmental effects of different scenarios for such increased production and new biobased economy in rural landscapes. Thereby the results serve as input to the ongoing productivism – post-productivism debate related to rural spaces in Europe. Empirical results from a case study of large scale conversion to biorefenery technologies, aiming to increase the total Danish harvest of biomass by 10 million tonnes via the conversion to new types of crop production and land management, is used as an example, and will be related to the common conceptual model presented by the...

The quality and safety through organic foods supply chain in Bulgaria Organic Eprints
Lubomirova, Miglena; Vassileva, Elka; Ivanova, Daniela; Mishev, Plamen.
The organic food market in Bulgaria is newly emerging and is comparatively small. The share of realized Bulgarian organic produce in the country is below 5 %. The purpose of this article is to determine the effect of the structure, management and functioning of food supply chain upon the quality and safety of organic food regarding consumer demand. The scientific research was based on Delphi’s enquiry method and 26 Bulgarian experts were interviewed. The results show that the nature and character of organic food production is one of the most secure and sustainable agricultural productions, which determines the high quality and safety of the final produce. According to experts, food safety in addition to taste and nutritional value is the most important...

Can early handling of suckler beef calves reduce their timidity towards humans? Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
In herds of suckler beef cows the relationship between humans and animals is an important issue concerning animal handling. Unlike dairy cow herds, suckler beef herds are less used to close contact with humans. Due to low management input animals may be difficult to handle during treatments like medical care, routine handling or at slaughter house.

Proteomic analysis of the Mycocentrospora acerina-carrot interaction during storage Organic Eprints
LOUARN, Sébastien; Jensen, Birgit; NAWROCKI, Arkadiusz; NØRREGAARD JENSEN, Ole.
During post harvest storage, a large proportion of carrots (more than 50%) may have to be discarded due to the development of liquorice rot caused by Mycocentrospora acerina. This fungus is soil borne and brought into the store in to soil adhering to the root. Liquorice rot development is mainly related to physiological or structural resistance of carrot, therefore the control of this storage disease is based on cultural practices and storage conditions. It is believed that carrots at the beginning of storage can resist disease developments due to chemical defence mechanisms involving some proteins, peptides and secondary metabolites. The hypothesis is that proteome changes during storage of carrots are related to the susceptibility to M. acerina. During...

The effect of short term feeding with organic and conventional diets on selected immune parameters in rat Organic Eprints
Baranska, A.; Skwarlo-Sonta, K.; Rembialkowska, E.; Brandt, K.; Lueck, L.; Leifert, C..
There is currently no evidence for beneficial health impacts being associated with the consumption of organic rather than conventional foods. This preliminary study was therefore aimed at using haematological parameters, white blood cell (WBC) number and splenocyte proliferation as sensitive assays to evaluate influence of the organic, low input and conventional components in the diet on rats’ immune system function. The results of a short term feeding trial with two rat generations indicates a potential effect on immune system function, which has to be confirmed by longer-term exposure studies.

Rooting and vitality of poinsettia cuttings was increased by arbuscular mycorrhiza in the donor plants Organic Eprints
Druege, Uwe; Xylaender, Marco; Zerche, Sigfried; von Alten, Henning.
In this paper, we provide evidence that the rooting performance of cuttings can be improved by the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis of donor plants. Poinsettia stock plants were inoculated with the Glomus intraradices isolate H510 and grown in three different cultivation systems (two organic and one conventional). AM colonization was not related to P availability in the substrate. Decay of the excised cuttings in response to unfavorable postharvest storage conditions was significantly reduced by AM colonization of the stock plants. In most cases, AM significantly promoted the formation of adventitious roots in the stored cuttings. The strongest effect of AM was found when donor plants were grown in a modified organic substrate; then AM-conditioned...

The organic food supply chain in relation to information management and the interaction between actors Organic Eprints
Kottila, Marja-Riitta; Maijala, Adeline; Rönni, Päivi.
Conventional retailers play a significant role in selling organic food, and therefore, it is important to understand how the demand-supply chain of organic food works as an element of the conventional food system. The proportion of organic food in the conventional food chains is small, and this poses a great challenge to the performance of the chain. Surveys and case specific studies on consumers and supply chain actors indicate that the changes in the conventional food system have an impact on the organic chain. The main obstacles to the optimisation of the organic food chain include poor information management, insufficient communication with consumers, and the diverging objectives and needs of the actors of the chain.
