<ol><li>A wide range of species that are cultivated in commercial mariculture are planktonic during at least part of their life cycle; for example, the larval stages of shellfish (shrimp and molluscs) and the live feeds (rotifers, brine shrimp, copepods) used in the larviculture of marine fish and shellfish. Over the last decades various techniques have been developed to deliver nutrients to these zooplanktonic organisms either through artificial diets or by manipulating the composition of the live prey fed to the carnivorous stages. This paper reviews the methodology that has allowed aquaculturists to gain knowledge of nutritional requirements and may offer interesting opportunities for ecologists to verify the importance of key nutrients in... |

A new procedure for the conversion of bound nitrogen into nitrogen gas, applicable to solid material, is described. It embodies two main stages: the catalytic ammonification of the sample and the consecutive transformation of ammonium to molecular nitrogen by the modified Dumas method. The first step of the preparation is carried out in a quartz reactor, filled with granular nickel, at a temperature of 700°C, the ammonia gas produced being trapped in sulphuric acid. In the second step, this solution is neutralised, dried and subjected to the Dumas combustion. The addition of reagents does not influence the results of the measurements. Spectrometric 15N percentage abundances are converted into mass spectrometric "true"... |

Four sperm whales (three subadult males stranded on the Belgian coast, a fourth older male found dead at sea) were analysed for total mercury, methylmercury and organochlorines. All four were part of a total of 24 sperm whales that stranded on the North Sea coasts over a period of six months, a highly unusual phenomenon. Total mercury levels ranged from 0.5 µg/g fw in kidney and 1 in muscle, up to 15 in liver. The finding of at least 90% of the mercury in its inorganic form confirms the existence of detoxification mechanisms in the liver of cetaceans. PCB concentrations in muscle, liver, kidney and blubber ranged from 10 to 25 µg/g lipids. These results are in the same order of magnitude as literature data, which however does not imply that there is no... |

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the hydrobiological aspects of the solar salt production process. Saltworks are man-managed artificial ecosystems that are highly vulnerable to biological disturbances, including uncontrolled proliferation of microalgae resulting in a reduced evaporation and contamination of the salt with gypsum and insoluble organic materials.Optimal production of solar salt, both in terms of quality and quantity, requires a well-established balance between the primary and secondary producers, with brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> grazing on phytoplankton constituting the major interaction. In this paper, we discuss the beneficial role of <i>Artemia</i> in balancing the hydrobiological activity of... |

A new species of Erebonasteridae, Amphicrossus pacificus, is decribed on the basis of a single female from a depth of 155 m north of New Caledonia in the Grand Passage zone. The new species is closely related to Erebonaster spinulosus Humes and for that reason the latter is transferred to the new genus Amphicrossus. Differences in body ornamentation and armature of maxilla, maxilliped and P4 serve to distinguish Amphicrossus and Erebonaster. Other noticeable discrepancies are found in the structure of the rostrum, the shape of the thoracic epimera and the design of the fifth pair of legs. A peculiar structure, the "sensory area", is shown on the posterior surface of enp-2 P2 in both Amphicrossus species which can be differentiated from each other on the... |

At two intertidal sites (one sandy and one silty, in the Scheldt estuary, The Netherlands), the fate of microphytobenthos was studied through an in situ 13C pulse- chase experiment. Label was added at the beginning of low tide, and uptake of 13C by algae was linear during the whole period of tidal exposure (about 27 mg m-2 h-1 in the top millimeter at both sites). The 13C fixed by microphytobenthos was rapidly displaced toward deeper sediment layers (down to 6 cm), in particular at the dynamic, sandy site. The residence times of microphytobenthos with respect to external losses (resuspension and respiration)... |

A cage exclusion experiment was used to examine the interaction between the epibenthos (permanent and visiting) and the macroinfauna of a high intertidal Kenyan <i>Avicennia marina</i> mangrove sediment. Densities of Oligochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda, Insecta larvae, Polychaeta and macro-Nematoda, and a broad range of environmental factors were followed over 5 mo of caging. A significant increase of amphipod and insect larvae densities in the cages indicated a positive exclusion effect, while no such effect was observed for oligochaetes (Tubificidae in particular), polychaetes or macronematodes. Resource competitive interactions were a plausible explanation for the status of the amphipod community. This was... |

To elucidate vertical (= from high to low water mark) macroinfaunal community patterns on little-studied Belgian dissipative sandy beaches, macroinfauna was sampled at eight stations along a seaward transect at De Panne. Mean sand particle size was 196 µm, and the beach slope was ca. 1 : 90. Nineteen species were collected (excluding non-quantitatively sampled species), nine of which were polychaetes and eight were crustaceans. Total macroinfaunal abundance per station ranged from 103 to 585 ind./ m². Polychaetes and crustaceans were numerically dominant, comprising more than 98% of total numbers. Seaward spatial distributions of abundant species were interpreted to represent three biotic zones or macroinfaunal communities, as suggested by a kite diagram,... |

Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential nutrient in particle and live aquafeeds. In order to better assess the needs for this nutrient during larviculture the AA content of algae, rotifers and <i>Artemia</i> was studied with respect to their suitability at startfeeding. In general, the microalgae evaluated were rich in AA (1000-4000 µgAA/gDW), but showed a considerable variability among the different species: e.g. the concentration in <i>Isochrysis</i> and<i>Chlorella</i> reached values 3-to 4-fold the percentage of <i>Tetraselmis</i> (0.11% of DW). <i>Brachionus</i> routinely cultured on <i>Chlorella</i> contained 2300 µg AA/gDW. Cysts of various batches and strains of... |

In order to assess the dietary needs for ascorbic acid (AA) at startfeeding, the AA content in the various live diets currently applied in aquaculture (algae, rotifers, <i>Artemia</i> ) was studied. Application of boosting techniques using ascorbyl palmitate (AP) as the vitamin C source enabled the transfer of elevated levels of bioactive vitamin C (up to 2500µg AA.g DW-1) via the live food chain into larvae of fish (<i>Clarias gariepinus, Dicentrarchus labrax, Scophthalmus maximus</i>), shrimp (<i>Pennaeus vannamei</i>) and prawn (<i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i>). This vitamin C enrichment procedure has proven to be a valuable technique, especially for the evaluation of the effects of... |

This article presents a general model for estimating population heterogeneity and “lack of knowledge” uncertainty in methylmercury (MeHg) exposure assessments using two-dimensional Monte Carlo analysis. Using data from fish-consuming populations in Bangladesh, Brazil, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, predictive model estimates of dietary MeHg exposures were compared against those derived from biomarkers (i.e., [Hg]hair and [Hg]blood). By disaggregating parameter uncertainty into components (i.e., population heterogeneity, measurement error, recall error, and sampling error) estimates were obtained of the contribution of each component to the overall uncertainty. Steady-state diet:hair and diet:blood MeHg exposure ratios were estimated for each population... |

Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb have been analysed in suspended matter and water samples from the Scheldt estuary, collected during five cruises between May 1982 and May 1983. In order to evaluate the overall metal behaviour in the estuary, continuous longitudinal profiles of the total, the particulate and the dissolved metal concentrations are discussed in relation to various specific physico-chemical parameters. By means of correlation and multi-regression techniques, several estuarine processes could be identified which dominate and/or control the behaviour of the individual trace metals in three distinct areas of the Scheldt estuary. The behaviour of the four selected metals was found to show some common features, but is besides this also characterised by many... |
