Nuclear medicine procedures for the evaluation of male sexual organs: a brief review BABT
Bernardo-Filho,Mario; Santos-Filho,Sebastião David; Fonseca,Adenilson de Souza da; Carter,Kevin; Missailidis,Sotiris.
Sexuality consists of three aspects that are interrelated and inseparable, biological, physiological and social. The biological aspect considers the individual's capability to give and to receive pleasure. In consequence, it covers the functionality of the sexual organs and the physiology of human sexual response cycle. Diagnostic imaging modalities, such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) have been used to evaluate clinical disorders of the male reproductive system. PET and SPECT procedures basically involve the administration of a radiopharmaceutical that has a higher uptake in a specific tumor or tissue. The aim of this brief review is to present some radiopharmaceuticals that have been used in...

Antagonism of Bacillus spp. against Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris BABT
Monteiro,Leila; Mariano,Rosa de Lima Ramos; Souto-Maior,Ana Maria.
The antagonism of eight Bacillus isolates was investigated against nine strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (causal agent of crucifers black rot) to assess the role of lipopeptides in this process. Antimicrobial and hemolytic (surfactant) activity tests were performed in vitro using agar diffusion methods. Antibiosis and hemolysis were positive for four Bacillus isolates against all X. campestris pv. campestris strains. The correlation observed between antimicrobial and hemolytic activities indicated that lipopeptides were involved in the antibiosis mechanism of the studied antagonists. Fermentation studies were carried out with the isolates that showed highest antimicrobial and hemolytic activities, to follow up growth and production of...

Nuñez-Gaona,Oscar; Saucedo-Castañeda,Gerardo; Alatorre-Rosas,Raquel; Loera,Octavio.
The aim of the present work was to study the effect of moisture content and inoculum on the growth and conidia production by Beauveria bassiana on wheat bran (WB).The highest growth rate of B. bassiana 885.2 on WB media was obtained at a w=1.0, with no detected growth at a w < 0.97. Solid-state fermentation (SSF) using WB (66% moisture; a w=1.0) achieved a maximal yield of 1.18x10 10 conidia per gram of dry substrate (gds). This yield decreased one order of magnitude with higher moisture contents or the addition of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as a texturiser. In SSF using WB (66% humidity),the time to obtain a yield of 1x10(10) conidia/gds, referred to as t10, could be predicted using a model considering common inoculum levels and maximal yields. For...

Discrimination between workers of Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans from monogynous and polygynous colonies BABT
Souza,Danival José de; Lucia,Terezinha Maria Castro Della; Barbosa,Luiz Cláudio de Almeida.
Behavioral assays were conducted with individuals from monogynous and polygynous colonies of Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans to evaluate the discriminatory ability of ant workers. These bioassays showed that this subspecies could not discriminate among non-nestmates or nestmate workers. However, nestmates of these same colonies did discriminate among workers of another subspecies Ac. subterraneus subterraneus. When discrimation occurred there were no differences in the response of workers from either monogynous or polygynous colonies. Similarities or differences in the chemical profile of both subspecies explained the absence or occurence of aggressiveness among workers. The chemical profile of colonies of the same subspecies was very similar among them,...

Multipotent male germline stem cells (mGSCs) from neonate porcine testis BABT
Niu,Zhiwei; Wu,Siyu; Wu,Chongyang; Li,Na; Zhu,Haijing; Liu,Weishuai; Hua,Jinlian.
ABSTRACT Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the foundation of spermatogenesis, during which unlimited spermatozoa is produced daily derived from SSCs in the testis throughout life of the male. Germline stem (GS) cells can be isolated from spermatogonia, which shared the characteristics of SSCs and embryonic stem cells (ESCs), and can be passaged stably in vitro. The study of GS cells contributes to understanding spermatogenesis process. However, little is known about the GS cells in domestic animals. Here, we report the successful establishment of a serum- and feeder-free system for multipotent male GS cells (mGSCs) from postnatal porcine testis. These cells expressed pluripotent markers, such as Oct4, Nanog, C-myc, and germline-specific markers...

Purification of C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis in aqueous two-phase systems using an experimental design BABT
Antelo,Francine Silva; Costa,Jorge Alberto Vieira; Kalil,Susana Juliano.
C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis was purified in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) of polyethylene glycol (PEG)/potassium phosphate, varying the molar mass of the PEG. Results using a full factorial design showed that an increase in the concentration of salt and decrease in the concentration of PEG caused an increment in the purification factor for all the ATPS studied. Optimization of the conditions of the purification was studied using a central composite rotatable design for each molar mass of PEG. The ATPS composed of 7% (w/w) PEG 1500 or 4% (w/w) PEG 8000 (g/gmol) and 23 or 22.5% (w/w) of phosphate resulted a purification factor of 1.6-fold for C-phycocyanin, with total and 57% recovery, respectively.
