Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathies: A Morphometric Overview International Journal of Morphology
Fazan,Valéria Paula Sassoli; Vasconcelos,Carlos Augusto Carvalho de; Valença,Marcelo Moraes; Nessler,Randy; Moore,Kenneth Charles.
Diabetes is now considered one of the main threats to human health in the 21st century and many researchers are dedicated to investigate the physiopathology of the disease, with further insights on the managements of its major complications. Since understanding the pathophysiology of the major complications of diabetes and their underlying processes is mandatory, experimental models of the disease may be useful as they allow the recognition of the early mechanisms involved in the long-term complications of diabetes. Peripheral nerve involvement is highly frequent in diabetes mellitus and it has been documented that one third of diabetic patients have peripheral neuropathy. The true prevalence is not known and reports vary from 10% to 90% in diabetic...

Anatomical and Clinical Considerations of the Pectoralis Tertius Muscle in Man International Journal of Morphology
del Sol,Mariano; Vásquez,Bélgica.
The anatomical variation of the major pectoral muscles is infrequent, namely the agenesis of the pectoralis major muscle due to the morpho-functional alterations it causes. On the other hand, he presence of -supernumerary - pectoral muscles is not common and its physiological, clinical or surgical importance will depend on the stage of its development. The important aspect is that these muscles, while crossing the anterior wall of the axila and inserting in the humerus, may confuse or difficult surgical access to the content of the axillary fossa. Pectoralis tertius muscles were found in two dissected cadavers at the Topographic Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de La Frontera, Chile. These muscles were bilateral and independent of the...

The present study was aimed at the macroanatomical and histological investigation and the demonstration of the structural characteristics of the uropygial gland in the white stork. The uropygial gland of two adult male white storks constituted the material of the study. It was determined that the gland was situated subcutaneously in between the caudal aspect of the lumbosacral bone and the first coccygeal vertebrae. The gland was composed of two lobes, which displayed an oval appearance when viewed from above and resembled a water drop when observed medially. Tuft of feathers were present on the caudal margin of each lobe. The present study revealed that the uropygial gland of the white stork is a simple tubular gland, which discharges its secretion into...

Variaciones Musculares del Cuello: Fascículo Accesorio del Músculo Elevador de la Escápula International Journal of Morphology
Tiznado,G; Bucarey,S; Hipp,J; Olave,E.

Proximal Femoral Epiphysis Anatomy in Chilean Population: Orthopedic and Forensic Aspects International Journal of Morphology
Osorio,Horacio; Schorwer,Karl; Coronado,César; Delgado,Javier; Aravena,Pedro.
From a biomechanical standpoint, bone geometry and density are factors correlated to the bone resistance of the femur when supporting body weight, with geometric parameters like the diameter of the femoral head and neck, the length of the femoral neck, and the femoral neck angle as determinant factors in the incidence of hip fractures, which increase in frequency and seriousness in osteoporotic patients. In Chile, morphometric data that contributes to relating the anatomy of the proximal epiphysis of the femur as an associated factor in hip fractures does not exist; likewise, there are no anthropometric indexes that may contribute to the forensic sciences. The purpose of this study is to establish average measurements of the proximal epiphysis of the femur...

Costodorsalis an Additional Slip of Pectoralis Major Muscle: a Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Shetty,Surekha D; Nayak,Satheesha B; Kumar,Naveen; Somayaji,S. N; Rao,Mohandas K. G.
Occurrence of variant muscular slips from pectoralis major muscle is rare. In this report, we present a rare case of aberrant muscular slip associated with the pectoralis major muscle which we call costodorsalis. This muscular slip originated from the 6th rib near the costochondral junction and ran along the lower border of pectoralis major muscle. It crossed the axilla from medial to lateral side and merged with the latissimus dorsi muscle. This type of origin and insertion is unique and has not been reported earlier. The knowledge of this muscle variation may be of special importance to the anesthesiologists, physiotherapists and plastic surgeons.

Abnormal Branching Pattern of the Axillary Artery and its Clinical Significance International Journal of Morphology
Ramesh Rao,T; Shetty,Prakashchandra; Suresh,R.
The increasing use of invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures in cardiovascular diseases makes it important that the type and frequency of vascular variations are well documented and understood. Sound knowledge of neurovascular variations is important for surgeons who remove axillary lymph nodes, to anesthesiologists, and orthopedic surgeons, considering the frequency of procedures done in this region. An unusual variation in the branching pattern of axillary artery was observed on the left side of a 60 year old female cadaver. In the present case the course and distribution of the first and second part of the axillary artery were normal. But a rare case of unusual origin of subscapular, anterior and posterior circumflex humeral, profunda brachii...
