Influence of temperature and diet on the development of Ulomoides dermestoides (Fairmaire, 1893) (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Diaperinae) BABT
Marinoni,Renato C.; Ribeiro-Costa,Cibele S..
Ulomoides dermestoides (Fairmaire, 1893) develops in stored food products (peanuts, maize, oats, rice, sorghum, etc.) and breeds successfully in the laboratory. To determine the best conditions for development, experiments were set up in different temperatures and diets, similar to storage conditions of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). The higher viability of individuals and the shorter developmental time were observed in the diet composed of hulls and seeds of fruits at 21 and 24°C.

PCR and bioassays screening of Bacillus thuringiensis isolates from rice-fields of Rio Grande do Sul, specific to lepidopterans and coleopterans BJM
Pinto,Laura Massochin Nunes; Fiuza,Lidia Mariana.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates from soil samples of rice-fields in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) were tested through PCR, aiming at the screening of six groups of Bt cry genes, which codify active proteins for coleopterans and lepidopterans rice pests, and their bioinsecticide potential regarding their use in IPM system, as well. Forty six Bt isolates were grown in Agar Nutrient for 12 h and submitted to total DNA extraction. The amplified fragments were analyzed in agarose gel (1-1.5%). The screening isolates showed that 56.51% were potentially lepidopterans specific (cry1, cry2 and cry9) and 21.73% were coleopteran specific (cry3 and cry7/8), with a homogeneous distribution in the rice-field areas in Rio Grande do Sul. Cry2 genes were found just once and...

Diversity and distribution of the Aegorhinus genus in the La Araucanía Region of Chile, with special reference to A. superciliosus and A.nodipennis Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Zavala,Andrea; Elgueta,Mario; Abarzúa,Juan; Aguilera,Alfonso; Quiroz,Andrés; Rebolledo,Ramón.
The Araucanía region is a berry producing area where important behavioral aspects of species in the genus Aegorhinus, a pest that affects crops, are still unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution, abundance and richness of these species in agroecological zones of La Araucanía Region and to determine the hosts in which they were found. The sites where these species were found were represented on a map divided into grids of 25 x 25 km. Eight species of Aegorhinus were found in the area, and Aegorhinus nodipennis and Aegorhinus superciliosus were the most abundant. The diversity was analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener index, and the equitability was determined using the Pielou index. The agroecological zone with the greatest...

Collection of Coleoptera from a poultry farm in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Pinto,Diego Moscarelli; Duarte,Juliano Lessa Pinto; Ribeiro,Paulo Bretanha; Silveira Júnior,Paulo.
To evaluate the population fluctuation of Coleoptera from a poultry farm in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, two sampling methods were used: a tube-type trap and a sandwich trap. The analyses of polynomial regression were applied independent of the type of sampling method used. The experiment was carried out for twelve months, from April 2002 to March 2003, in a broiler barn aviary at the Conjunto Agrotécnico Visconde da Graça/UFPEL. A total of 43.945 Coleopterans were captured from the following species: Alphitobius diaperinus, Carcinops troglodytes, Euspilotus rubriculus, Gnathocerus cornutus, Mezium americanum and Somotrichus unifasciatus. Among these, Alphitobius diaperinus was present in all months of the year, with larval population peak in...
