An Institutional Framework for Meeting International Food-Safety Market Standards from a Developing-Country Perspective AgEcon
Gupta, Kriti Bardhan; Saghaian, Sayed H..
This paper examines problems being faced by agribusiness firms in developing countries in meeting the food-safety standards imposed by importing countries in their respective markets. Based on existing institutional frameworks in developing countries such as India, it is suggested that in order to meet the prescribed standards in international markets there is a need to establish inter-linkages across different institutions not only within developing countries but also with respected international standard-setting organizations for better and smoother implementation of WTO measures related to international food-safety market standards.

Consumer Purchasing Behavior in Response to Media Coverage of Avian Influenza AgEcon
Beach, Robert H.; Zhen, Chen.
Consumer concerns regarding food safety can have substantial impacts on their consumption patterns. Thus, understanding consumer response to food safety information is important for quantifying consumer response to food safety events, predicting market impacts, and developing appropriate risk communication strategies. Flexible demand systems have gained much popularity in analyzing effects of food safety outbreaks on consumer demand because of their ability to capture interactions between the demand for substitutable and complementary goods. Using Italian scanner data on meat sales, we show the economic importance of accounting for the impact of avian flu outbreaks on group expenditures for meats in a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) specification...

The Relative Importance of Search versus Credence Product Attributes: Organic and Locally Grown AgEcon
Wirth, Ferdinand F.; Stanton, John L.; Wiley, James B..
Organic foods and local foods have come to the forefront of consumer issues, due to concerns about nutrition, health, sustainability, and food safety. A conjoint analysis experiment quantified the relative importance of, and trade-offs between, apple search and experience attributes (quality/blemishes, size, flavor), credence attributes (conventional vs. organic production method, local origin vs. product of USA vs. imported), and purchase price when buying apples. Quality is the most important apple attribute. Production method—organic versus conventional—had no significant impact on preferences.

Corporate and Consumer Social Responsibilities: Label Regulations in the Lab AgEcon
Etile, Fabrice; Teyssier, Sabrina.
Although consumer attitudes toward corporate social responsibility are positive, socially responsible (SR) products are far from gaining significant market shares. Information asymmetries have been identified as one of the factor contributing to this attitude-behaviour gap, because social responsibility is a credence attribute. Signalling may remedy this market failure. We use an experimental posted offer market to investigate the impact of various regulatory requirements for labels on sellers’ choice to supply SR products and to signal it, and on buyers’ choice of ethical quality. Three treatments are tested: label certification by a third-party, “cheap-talk signalling” with random monitoring and with or without reputations. Individual social preferences...

WTP for Traceable Meat Attributes: A Meta‐analysis AgEcon
Cicia, Gianni; Colantuoni, Francesca.
Several researches evaluated consumers’ Willingness To Pay (WTP) for each meat traceable attribute, generating a lot of information in this regard, although related to the conditions of each study. In light of this, WTP estimates for traceability characteristics largely differ across the literature, leading sometimes to contrasting interpretations. Seeking a full, meaningful statistical description of the findings of a collection of studies, the meta‐analysis allows us analyzing the consistency across studies and controlling for factors thought to drive variations in WTP estimates. The meta‐analysis has been conducted of 23 studies that, in aggregate, report 92 valuations for WTP.

The Effect of Alternative Nutrition Menu Labels on Children’s Meals Purchases and Parent-Child Decision-Making AgEcon
Holmes, Ashley; Serrano, Elena; Davis, George C..
Children are one subpopulation that have seen a threefold increase in obesity over the last two decades but have received no attention in the menu labeling literature. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of different menu labeling formats on purchases of children’s meals and parent-child decision-making at a family-oriented restaurant. The intervention consists of five children’s menus featuring six bundled, nutritionally diverse, and equally priced combinations that are implemented over about a year. Accompanying each menu is a survey postcard collecting information on the parent-child decision process in choosing the item. This is ongoing research and all data is not in but at this point, the very early evidence points toward child-menu...

ANALYSIS OF FACTORS INFLUENCING THE FREQUENCY OF CATFISH CONSUMPTION IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Drammeh, Lamin; House, Lisa; Sureshwaran, Suresh; Selassie, Haile.
Consumption of seafood, including catfish, has become an important part of the diet for consumers in the United States. Per capita consumption of catfish increased from 0.41 pounds in 1985 to 0.90 pounds in 2001. The goal of this study is to investigate factors that influence the decisions to consume and frequency of consumption of catfish. One finding was the main emphasis of the Catfish Institute to market catfish as "farm-raised”" and to increase preparation knowledge through distribution of recipes should address factors likely to increase consumption.

THE ROLE OF EMOTIONS AND PERCEIVED CONTROL IN THE RECOVERY STRATEGY OF SERVICE COMPANIES AgEcon
Kolos, Krisztina; Kenesei, Zsofia.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of service recovery tactics. The research included a qualitative study based on 30 interviews with customers and employees of a telecommunication company. This was followed by a quantitative study using between subject experimental designs based on scenarios. Our research results suggest that employees’ positive emotions and perceived control during the recovery process make consumers more satisfied.

This paper investigates the relationships between country of origin labeling (COOL) issues and consumers concern about safety and health towards using of foreign produce. Results show that those who were married, self employed, had higher incomes, or possessed more education were more likely to support COOL. A consumer survey showed that about 84% of respondents overall, and more specifically, about 84% of female and 83% of male respondents would like markets to provide information about country of origin of fresh produce. The result also shows that about 73% of respondents regularly read food advertisements in newspapers and grocery brochures.

Market Differentiation Potential of Country-of-origin, Quality and Traceability Labeling AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Roosen, Jutta.
Product labeling has gained considerable attention recently, as a means to both provide product-specific information and reduce quality uncertainty faced by consumers, as well as from a regulatory point of view. This article focuses on whether and to what extent origin, quality and traceability labeling is an appropriate way to differentiate food products. The focus is on fresh meat and fresh fish, two mainly generic food product categories with a high degree of credence character. Insights into the potential for market differentiation through origin, quality and traceability labeling are provided and discussed using primary data collected during the period 2000-2005 by means of four consumer surveys. In general, direct indications of quality, including...
