Availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium from Poultry Litter and Conventional Fertilizers in a Volcanic Soil Cultivated with Silage Corn Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hirzel,Juan; Walter,Ingrid.
Poultry litter (PL) is an organic matter source used as soil amendment. Besides its important nutrient content, it is a cheap alternative to conventional fertilizers in crop production. The efficient use of PL also helps reduce the environmental problems normally associated with its disposal near poultry production farms. This article reports the relative effects of PL and conventional fertilizers on the availability of soil N, P and K, dry matter (DM) production and total nutrient content in silage corn (Zea mays L.). The field experiment was carried out in a soil derived from volcanic ash (Tipic Melanoxerands) of Central South Chile. Corn was grown for three seasons (2002-2005) and PL and conventional fertilizers were applied in the first two years. The...

Potassium and Phosphorus in Muscat Rosada Grape Yield in Elqui Valley Soil Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Sierra B,Carlos; Alfaro P,Rubén.
The effects of P and K on grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) var. Muscat Rosada were evaluated four years, considering the same levels of N. The experiment was conducted at the Vicuña Experimental Station (30° S; 70°44´ W) of the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA). The soil is alluvial antropic miscellaneous (Entisols). Three fertilization treatments were established: 1) N 160 + P2O5 200 + K2O 300; 2) N 160 + P2O5 0 + K2O 300; and 3) N 160 + P2O5 200 + K2O 0. At the beginning of the experiment, grape vines received all the phosphate fertilizers, 200 kg ha-1 of P2O5 as triple superphosphate in Treatments 1 and 3. Nitrogen was applied as urea for four years. The applications were initiated when the vine buds measured 20 cm. The K was applied to...

The influence of N and P supply and genotype on N remobilization in containerized Pinus radiata plants Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Watt,Michael S; Clinton,Peter W; Mason,Euan G.
A large proportion of the nitrogen (N) used in the current-year growth of the widely grown plantation species Pinus radiata D. Don is N that was stored in plant tissues the previous year. However, the extent to which an imbalance between levels of phosphorus (P) and N may change the capacity of plants to remobilize N is unknown. In this study, the N remobilization responses of four P. radiata genotypes to a factorial combination of N and P additions were assessed in containerized plants in a two-year greenhouse experiment. N supply was enriched with 15N at 2.5%o(labeled N) during the first year. Plants were then transferred to clean sand and grown for another year with 15N at levels close to natural levels (0.3664899 atom percent 15N, δ15N...

Soil C/N influences the carbon flux and partitioning in control and fertilized mini-plots of Pinus radiata in New Zealand Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Watt,Michael S; Clinton,Peter W; Mason,Euan G.
Patterns of carbon flux and partitioning were examined in highly stocked (40,000 stems ha-1) control and fertilized mini-plots of Pinus radiata D. Don at five sites, which covered a wide climatic and edaphic gradient on the South Island of New Zealand. The gross-primary productivity (GPP) and the partitioning of the GPP to the above- and below-ground productivity and respiration were determined using a carbon budget approach. All of the components of the GPP, the above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP [r² = 0.67, P ≤ 0.01]), above-ground plant respiration (APR [r² = 0.66, P ≤ 0.01]), and total below-ground carbon flux (TBCF [r² = 0.41, P ≤ 0.01]) significantly increased with the GPP, but the ANPP:GPP, APR:GPP and TBCF:GPP...

Phosphorus reduction by sifting fish waste meal Ciência Rural
Lima,Ronaldo Lima de; Enke,Dariane Beatriz Schoffen; Braun,Neiva; Fracalossi,Débora Machado.
Fish meal is widely included in animal feed because it contains ideal essential amino acids profile, it is rich in energy, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and with >80% apparent protein digestibility in peneid shrimp. In human nutrition, studies are investigating the inclusion of fish meal in snacks, cakes, breads and cookies, as an enrichment in calcium, phosphorus, iron, protein and, especially, omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids reduces heart diseases and have antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory properties (eicosapentaenoic acid), and are essential to the formation of brain tissue and retina in infants and are important during pregnancy and lactation (docosahexaenoic acid). Fish meal produced from fish waste is rich in minerals...
