PERFORMANCE OF GENERATIONS OF UENF/CALIMAN 01 PAPAYA AND CORRELATIONS BETWEEN GERMINATION, VEGETATIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT Rev. Bras. Frutic.
MENGARDA,LIANA HILDA GOLIN; LOPES,JOSÉ CARLOS; ALEXANDRE,RODRIGO SOBREIRA; FERREIRA,ADÉSIO; BRAGA,ALICE DE FREITAS.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize the seeds quality and the plant development of F1 and F2 generations of hybrid UENF/Caliman 01 papaya, and the relations between the physic-chemical and physiological quality of seeds, vegetative and reproductive development of plants in the field for 360 days, and fruit quality. The relative contribution (Cr %) to the genetic divergence for each characteristic was estimated. For those with higher importance for each group (Cr = 25%), the Pearson correlation and the canonical correlation analysis were applied. The F1 seeds showed higher physic-chemical and physiological quality, with greater length (0.55 cm), sugar and lipid levels (5.13 and 11.58 mg g-1, respectively), germination and normal seedlings...

Physical purity and germination of sugarcane seeds (caryopses) (Saccharum spp.) Rev. bras. sementes
Caieiro,Juliana Terezinha; Panobianco,Maristela; Bespalhok Filho,João Carlos; Ohlson,Osvaldo de Castro.
Plant breeding is generally done through sexual reproduction even when the species is propagated asexually for commercial exploitation, as for example, in sugarcane. Therefore, the development of procedures to evaluate sugarcane seed viability is important for plant breeding programs. The objective of this research was to develop a methodology for analyzing the viability of sugarcane seeds (Saccharum spp.). Three crosses were used, two biparental crosses and one polycross. For the germination test study, two substrates (paper and sand) and three constant incubation temperatures (25 ºC, 30 ºC and 35 ºC), in the presence of constant light and also an alternating temperatures (20-30 ºC), with 8 hours light (30 ºC) and 16 hours darkness (20 ºC), were studied....

Evaluation of lignin content of soybean seed coat stored in a controlled environment Rev. bras. sementes
Krzyzanowski,Francisco Carlos; Franca Neto,José de Barros; Mandarino,Jose Marcos Gontijo; Kaster,Milton.
Breeding soybean for high seed quality is an important approach for developing cultivars for tropical regions, and the lignin content in the seed coat is one of the screening parameters for this trait. Considering that many breeding lines are evaluated in each growing season using the presently recommended method for lignin determination, a long period is required for the evaluation of the whole breeding program. This time limitation may influence lignin content assessment, if lignin is degraded during storage. This research reported was designed to determine whether lignin was degraded in the seed coat of soybean seed cultivars stored for one year in a controlled environment (10°C temperature and 50% air relative humidity). Seeds of 12 selected soybean...

Determination of the mode of reproduction of bahiagrass hybrids using cytoembryological analysis and molecular markers R. Bras. Zootec.
Weiler,Roberto Luis; Dall’Agnol,Miguel; Simioni,Carine; Krycki,Karine Cristina; Dahmer,Nair; Guerra,Divanilde.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the mode of reproduction of a hybrid progeny derived from intraspecific crosses of Paspalum notatum through cytoembryological analysis and use of RAPD (random amplification of polymorphic DNA) molecular markers. Cytoembryological analysis allowed identification of the mode of reproduction of 28 plants that were selected after agronomic productivity evaluations. Of these, 19 had embryo sac morphology compatible with an apomictic mode of reproduction and nine had embryo sac morphology compatible with a sexual mode of reproduction. Meanwhile, molecular marker analysis for 194 individuals showed 54 sexual and 140 apomictic plants; of the 28 plants analyzed by the two methods, ten results (35.7%) were in...

Early indirect selection for nitrogen use efficiency in maize1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Caixeta,Débora Santos; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso.
Several studies to evaluate nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have been carried out using early growth stages. However, there are no scientific reports on the ideal stage for evaluation and on which characteristics have the highest correlation with the NUE at that stage. The aim therefore was to identify the phenological stages and secondary characteristics which maximize accuracy in early indirect selection for NUE in maize. To do this, three endogamic maize strains were evaluated in a completely randomised design with five replications, in a triple factorial scheme (strains x N levels x phenological stage), at two contrasting nitrogen levels: low and high nitrogen. The plants were evaluated at five growth stages: stage nine (V9), with 14 fully-developed...

Diallel analysis of yield, popping expansion, and southern rust resistance in popcorn lines Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Vieira,Rafael Augusto; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Tessmann,Dauri José; Hata,Fernando Teruhiko.
Ten popcorn inbred lines were crossed in a circulant partial diallel matching scheme (group of lines derived from IAC 112 × group of lines from 'Zaeli'). The hybrids were evaluated in respect to grain yield (GY), popping expansion (PE), and resistance to southern rust (Puccinia polysora, Pp), in randomized block design, with three replications. Data was examined by analyses of variance and Kempthorne and Curnow's diallel analysis. General combining ability (GCA) was significant (p < 0.10) in the set 2-Zaeli for GY, PE, and partial resistance to Pp. This indicated that additive gene effects are predominant, and therefore breeding methods of recurrent selection are recommended. However, none of lines had outstanding GCA for GY and PE. The line P8.5 was...

Genomic prediction of leaf rust resistance to Arabica coffee using machine learning algorithms Scientia Agricola
Sousa,Ithalo Coelho de; Nascimento,Moysés; Silva,Gabi Nunes; Nascimento,Ana Carolina Campana; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Almeida,Dênia Pires de; Pestana,Kátia Nogueira; Azevedo,Camila Ferreira; Zambolim,Laércio; Caixeta,Eveline Teixeira.
ABSTRACT Genomic selection (GS) emphasizes the simultaneous prediction of the genetic effects of thousands of scattered markers over the genome. Several statistical methodologies have been used in GS for the prediction of genetic merit. In general, such methodologies require certain assumptions about the data, such as the normality of the distribution of phenotypic values. To circumvent the non-normality of phenotypic values, the literature suggests the use of Bayesian Generalized Linear Regression (GBLASSO). Another alternative is the models based on machine learning, represented by methodologies such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Decision Trees (DT) and related possible refinements such as Bagging, Random Forest and Boosting. This study aimed to...

Forage yield and persistence of red clover progenies in two environments Scientia Agricola
Montardo,Daniel Portella; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Paim,Nilton Rodrigues.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important temperate legume species, used to lessen the lack of forage during the critical fall-winter period in Rio Grande do Sul, RS, Brazil. However, its utilization has been restricted mainly because of its lack of persistence. This work evaluates the dry matter yield and persistence of red clover half-sib progenies in two physiographic regions of RS: "Depressão Central", in Eldorado do Sul and "Encosta Superior do Nordeste", in Veranópolis. Experiments were carried out for two growing seasons and results were compared to two red clover commercial checks, Qüiñequeli and Estanzuela 116. The region of Veranópolis was more adequate for red clover forage production, enabling better yield and persistence....

Detection of differentially methylated regions of irradiated fig tree selections Scientia Agricola
Rodrigues,Maria Gabriela Fontanetti; Soares,Murilo Racy; Gimenez,Daniele Fernanda Jovino; Fonseca,Larissa Fernanda Simielli; Torrieri,Erico; Ramos,Ester Silveira; Giuliatti,Silvana.
ABSTRACT Fig tree (Ficus carica L.) breeding programs using conventional methods, such as directed crosses, to obtain new cultivars, are unworkable in many countries, including Brazil. Consequently, genetic breeding through mutagenesis has emerged as an important line of research that can improve this crop, and be a significant source of information about this species and assist in the implementation of propagation projects and appropriate management. The aim of this study was to verify the existence of epigenetic variability attributable to DNA methylation in irradiated fig selections when compared both to each other and to the main commercial cultivar, “Roxo-de-Valinhos”, which had previously used methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) and...

Cytogenetic data for Paspalum notatum Flügge accessions Scientia Agricola
Dahmer,Nair; Schifino-Wittmann,Maria Teresa; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Castro,Biane de.
Several species of the genus Paspalum L. are important forages, due their to quality, productivity and tolerance to environmental stresses. Chromosome numbers, meiotic configurations and pollen fertility were evaluated in a collection of 85 accessions of Paspalum notatum Flügge and in seven accessions of Pensacola (P. notatum var saurae). All P. notatum accessions were tetraploid, with 2n = 4x = 40, except one diploid accession, considered as an escape of Pensacola. All Pensacola plants had 2n = 2x = 20. Meiotic configurations at diakinesis and metaphase I varied among tetraploid accessions, from plants with only bivalents to plants with high frequency of quadrivalents. Pollen fertility varied from 82.5 to 95.9% among diploid accessions and from 72.4 to...

Sexual polyploidization in red clover Scientia Agricola
Simioni,Carine; Schifino-Wittmann,Maria Teresa; Dall'Agnol,Miguel.
Because sexual polyploidization broadens genetic basis and supply plant breeders with more variability for the selection process, it can be useful in red clover breeding. This paper reports results of three crossing cycles, starting from a parental generation of tetraploid red clover plants (female parent), and diploids from the Quiñiqueli cultivar, selected for production of more than 1% of giant pollen grains (male parent) aiming to obtain tetraploid plants to be used in red clover breeding programs. Crosses in the next generations were performed by mutual cross-pollinations. Chromosome number chimerism and high pollen sterility were detected in F1, F2 and F3, but there was a trend towards increasing seed production and seed viability along the...

Artificial neural network for prediction of the area under the disease progress curve of tomato late blight Scientia Agricola
Alves,Daniel Pedrosa; Tomaz,Rafael Simões; Laurindo,Bruno Soares; Laurindo,Renata Dias Freitas; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Nick,Carlos; Silva,Derly José Henriques da.
ABSTRACT: Artificial neural networks (ANN) are computational models inspired by the neural systems of living beings capable of learning from examples and using them to solve problems such as non-linear prediction, and pattern recognition, in addition to several other applications. In this study, ANN were used to predict the value of the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for the tomato late blight pathosystem. The AUDPC is widely used by epidemiologic studies of polycyclic diseases, especially those regarding quantitative resistance of genotypes. However, a series of six evaluations over time is necessary to obtain the final area value for this pathosystem. This study aimed to investigate the utilization of ANN to construct an AUDPC in the...

Genetic control of viviparity in common bean Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Laís Andrade; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Guilherme,Scheila Roberta.
ABSTRACT: In common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) harvesting is carried out in the field. It is therefore necessary that cultivars be tolerant to viviparity, i.e., germination of grains still in the pods. Study of the percentage of germination of beans in the pods under laboratory conditions, where humidity content is high, has been proposed. Furthermore, under question is whether the thickness of the pod wall affects water uptake by the pods and, consequently, viviparity. Thus, the aim of the present study was to verify if there is variance among progenies for viviparity and if it is influenced by pod thickness. We assessed the parents, Pérola and ESAL 686, the F1, and a number of segregating generations in two crop seasons, in relation to the percentage of...
