Emergy Evaluations of Denmark and Danish Agriculture Assessing the Limits of Agricultural Systems to Power Society Organic Eprints
Haden, Andrew C..
As the process of industrialization has run its course over the twentieth century, the relative importance of agriculture as an economic activity and a means of cultural sustenance for nations has declined dramatically. In this thesis, a historical ecological-economic perspective offers insights into both the causes and effects of Danish agriculture's decline in economic importance relative to the economy of Denmark as a whole. Emergy evaluations were made of the national economy and agricultural subsystem of Denmark for the years 1936, 1970 and 1999. Emergy is defined as all the available energy that was used in the work of making a product and expressed in units of one type of energy (Odum, 1996). In total, six separate emergy analyses were performed. By...

Organic farming values in Switzerland – results of a focus group study Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Kilchsperger, Rahel; Bodini, Antonella.
Eight focus group discussions, conducted in 2004 and 2005, about ethical values among established and recently converted organic producers (mountain and lowland area) and other stakeholders in Switzerland are summarised. The aim was to contrib-ute to the elaboration of principles for the new EU regulation for organic food and farming as part of the EU Organic-Revision project. The participants’ values were contrasted with the four new principles of organic production of IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements). Health and ecological sustainability were key issues. The producers saw secure livelihood, the maintenance of their family farm, authenticity, animal welfare and farming with nature as major issues. The sys-tem approach was...

The challenge of ecological justice in a globalising world Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo F..
Ecological justice is a challenging concept in relation to the current development of agriculture, including organic agriculture, because it positions social and ecological interests against market liberalism and economic growth. Ecological justice concerns fairness with respect to common environments, and it is therefore closely connected to the idea of commons. The concepts of commons and ecological justice are particularly relevant to organic agriculture, which builds on close cooperation with ecological systems and cycles, and they may suggest ways to resist the pressures of globalisation and structural and technological developments.

Identifying the basic normative principles for organic farming Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Kristensen, Erik Steen; Hansen, Birgitte.
What are the basic principles of 'how to act in an organic way'? In Denmark there has been a comprehensive discussion of this ethical question in connection with a major new organic research effort. Three related principles have crystallised in the discussion: the cyclical principle, the precautionary principle and the nearness principle. These principles have been used in an analysis of the acceptance of different technologies in organic farming and as a basis for making suggestions on future developments.

Environmental, Social, and Economic Impacts of Sustainability Certification in the Agricultural Sector – The Current State of Empirical Research Organic Eprints
Jawtusch, Julia; Oehen, Bernadette; Niggli, Urs.
Various stakeholders involved with sustainability certification are interested in knowing whether certification really fulfills its promises. Business managers who have to determine what type of products to source, consumers who are concerned about making appropriate buying decisions for themselves and their families, producers who think about obtaining certification, and sustainability standard initiatives that themselves need arguments to support their certification programs. A recent study conducted by FiBL (Niggli et al 2011) reviewed the current state of empirical research on environmental, social, and economic impacts of sustainability certification in the agricultural sector. One result of the study was that a disproportionate number of research...

Environmental Policy Performance Revisited: Do Organic Food Policies Matter for Sustainable Consumption Organic Eprints
Daugbjerg, Carsten; Sønderskov, Kim Mannemar.
Abstract Environmental policy performance studies should pay more attention to the package of policy instruments applied rather than concentrate on single policy instruments or policy institutions. Therefore this paper develops a policy typology. Its value is tested in a comparative analysis of organic food policies in Denmark, Sweden, the UK and the US and of their impact on organic food consumption. Our analysis demonstrates that cross‐country variation in organic food consumption is explained by differences in the packages of policy instruments applied, controlling for almost every relevant systemic and individual level alternative explanation found in the literature of environmental performance. The policy typology developed has general value and...

Comparison between two accreditation criteria: A report on the differences between the IFOAM Accreditation Criteria and ISO 65 (EN 45011) Organic Eprints
Huber, Beate.
The paper describes the results of a comparison between two accreditation criteria: the IFOAM Accreditation Criteria and ISO 65 (EN 45011. The comparison does not provide an assessment of each norm, and the format of the comparison makes it difficult to make a quick overview on the major differences. In addition, a summary and an assessment of the variations of both norms are missing. On the other hand, the comparison enables the reader to make their own assessment and as such will be a valuable tool in the discussion and negotiations about recognition of IFOAM Accreditation.

Influence of policy support on the development of organic farming in the European Union Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Lampkin, Nic; Foster, Carolyn.
The paper explores the influence of policy support on the development of the organic sector. Policies include the agri-environment (EU Regulation 2078/92), the EU regulation 2092/91 defining organic crop-production in statutory terms and policies to support market and regional development and the information provision of organic farming. Policy makers have been interested in organic farming for its environmental and health benefits and the potential to contribute to the goals of regional development programmes. The evaluation suggests that the variation in support policies alone can not explain the different rates of conversion to organic farming in the EU.
