Die Bedeutung des Faktors Qualität für die Entwicklung des Marktes für ökologische Produkte Organic Eprints
Oppermann, Rainer.

Organic Viticulture in Europe Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Zanoli, Raffaele.
So far no official statistical data on the current status of organic viticulture in Europe exist. Even though most countries in the European Union, the EU accession countries and the EFTA countries collate data on their land under organic management, figures on land use patterns are not always available. The share of organic vineyards of all vineyards is still small. The percentage of organic vineyards is – with the exception of Greece, Italy, Spain - smaller than the percentage of organic land of all agricultural land in the respective countries. This is particularly striking for Austria and Switzerland where only little more than 1 % of the vineyards are organic whereas the total organic land is around eight per cent of all agricultural land. It is also...

The Potential of Organic Agriculture to Mitigate the Influence of Agriculture on Global Warming - A Review Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian; Aubert, Claude.
The biggest mitigation potential of agriculture lies in soil carbon sequestration. The most promising practices for this, such as the use of legume leys and organic fertilisers, are common to organic agriculture, thus suggesting considerable mitigation potential for this farming system. However, mitigation in agriculture needs to be assessed beyond the level of single farming practices. This is best illustrated with the issues of fertility management and animal husbandry. Optimisation of fertility management necessitates optimisation of the soil-fertiliser system as a whole and, thus, the assessment of the links between crop rotations, fertiliser types, tillage and soil carbon sequestration. Optimisation of animal husbandry requires a global view,...

Optimierte Beikrautbekämpfung im Zwiebelanbau Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin.

Structural development in Danish agriculture and its implications for farmland nature Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
During the last decades, development of Danish agriculture was characterised by concentration of land on fewer and larger farms and consequently increasing farm sizes. On basis of three case studies supplemented by national data we explore relationships between farm size change and farmland nature in terms of field sizes and hedgerow densities. Data point to a significant relationship between farm enlargement and increases in mean field sizes. Furthermore, mean field size is negatively related to densities of hedgerows. For the coming decades, scenarios for Danish agriculture point to a continued increase in farm sizes. We argue for an increased focus on the effects of a continued scale enlargement on farmland nature in terms of changes in field size...

The Value of Eco-Labelling - Executive Summary Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
John Paull’s book ‘The Value of Eco-labelling’ ‘ published by VDM Verlag examines the value that eco-labelling and geo-labelling can add to food. Which eco-labels and which place-of-origin labels add value? Just how much value do they add? And for which consumers? This study demonstrates that a knowledge of the method of production and the place of production of food has measurable monetary value for consumers. The study examines the value to consumers of particular eco-labels and geo-labels. ‘The Value of Eco-Labelling’ reports the values of Organic, Certified Organic, Natural and Eco, as well as of country-of-origin labelling (CoOL) and regional provenance labelling. The interaction effects of multiple food labelling claims are identified. Based on a...

Organic Farming in Latin America and the Caribbean Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V.; Ugas, Roberto.
In Latin America, 220’000 producers managed 6.4 million hectares of agricultural land organically in 2007. This constitutes 20 percent of the world’s organic land. The leading countries are Argentina (2'777'959 hectares), Brazil (1'765'793 hectares) and Uruguay (930'965 hectares). The highest shares of organic agricultural land are in the Dominican Republic and Uruguay with more than six percent and in Mexico and Argentina with more than two percent. Most organic production in Latin America is for export. Important crops are tropical fruits, grains and cereals, coffee and cocoa, sugar and meats. Most organic food sales in the domestic markets of the countries occur in major cities, such as Buenos Aires and São Paulo. Fifteen countries have legislation on...

To meet future food demands we need to change from annual grain legumes to multipurpose semi-perennial legumes Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Henning.
The last meal of an Iron Age man buried in a Danish bog included at least 60 plant species, including barley, linseed and species we now consider weeds. A modern man relies in contrast on a remarkable small number of crop plants, mostly cereal stables like wheat, rice and maize (Evans, 1998). Both land and people in Sub-Saharan Africa are suffering. Natural resource management is in distress and most rural Africans remain poor and food insecure despite widespread macroeconomic, political and sectorial reforms. Most predictions are that these Africans will remain food insecure in the foreseeable future (Pinstrup-Andersen & Pandya-Lorch, 2001). Innovations are, however, changing this landscape much faster than we could expect. A market-oriented...

Strategies for a diversified organic pork production Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Claudi-Magnussen, C.; Hermansen, J.E.; Andersen, B.H..
Possible reasons for the low market share of organic pork may be heavy price competition with conventional produced pork products combined with no or small distinctive characteristics in appearance and quality, both regarding eating quality (flavour, tenderness) and ethical quality (production methods). The overall aim of this study is to identify strategies for a diversified organic pork production with high credibility and superior eating quality based on pigs foraging in the cropping system, use of a traditional breed and no castration. Preliminary results indicate that the use of a traditional breed, the Danish Black-Spotted pig, might be a way to produce pork, which in appearance differ from conventional pork and at the same time improve the...
